Winter 2017/18 The LAAT News Schools serving their communities through excellence, exploration and encouragement within the love of God. Issue 9 The diocese of Lincoln is called to faithful worship, confident discipleship and joyful service and our church schools bear witness to our belief that that every child is made in the image of God and loved by Him. They were founded for the good of their local communities so that children can be educated through the values and stories of Christianity. Gosh - another New Year! By now it seems a bit late in the day to start wishing people a Happy New Year, but late or not I wish you the very best of year that will bring you and your school communities all that you need and some of what you want! It is going to be another exciting year. We have new schools joining, the Hubs are really beginning to have an impact on pupils opportunities and outcomes, the Chairs Forum is about to start and we have a new LAAT Chair - Jeremy Woolner and a new LAAT Director - Emma Clarke. This year the Trust will continue to work for the benefit of pupils in all of the schools. The pressures are huge as we all ensure a fabulous experience for pupils, meet the needs of Ofsted and work closely with the support and guidance of the Regional Schools Commissioner and his team. Our vision talks of encouragement - Micah 6:8: This is what the Lord requires of you - to act justly, love mercy and to walk humbly with your God. In each of our places in each of our contexts we continue to do that with an awareness that each has their own constraints and pressures of which we know little. May we all walk humbly side by side supporting and encouraging each other and making this year a year to remember. Christmas Celebrations - P 2 What s happening across the Trust? IN THIS EDITION Canon Peter Hall & Edenham - P3 East Ravendale - P4 - P5 The Wainfleet Magdalen - P5 Whaplode - P6 Weston St Mary - P7 1
Christmas Celebrations The LAAT and DBE team enjoying their festive lunch The Magdalen Wainfleet School and their KS2 students Christmas Performance The Ruskington Chestnut Street Academy The children at Chestnut Street have been learning about Epiphany with Reverend Canon Pennock. They created some amazing crowns over the Christmas break using wrapping paper and bows from their Christmas presents and wore these to our Collective Worship during their first week back. This was a great way for the children to learn about the journey of the Kings and their visit to baby Jesus. 2
What's Happening? Canon Peter Hall Church of England Primary School On 12th October 2017, Chris Norman and Paul Hooley were invited to Canon Peter Hall Primary School to interview 3 candidates for their school EHS representative. The successful applicants will support the Headteacher and EHS Team on their monthly EHS walks. From over 10 applications, after a paper sort a short list of 3 were put forward for interview, the 3 interviewees ages 6, 6 and 8 were invited for a formal interview with Chris, Paul and the Head. This was under normal interview conditions. The children had 10 questions to answer ranging from schools scenario s (water on floor or running in corridors) to how they can help EHS within the school. Their answers were amazing, they highlighted hazards from the school environment including trailing and damaged cables, sharp items like pins and thumb tacks, spills and even health issues from germs if you don t wash your hands after using the toilet or working in the outside garden classroom. We were happy to offer all 3 candidates a position to represent the school in EHS matters. Their payment is a tour of Bemis Elsham and maybe a McDonalds Happy Meal on the way home. It s a great initiative from the school and something which we are very proud to support and will continue to do so. The above picture is taken from inside the school where Bemis have a board to highlight our partnership. Regards, Chris Norman. Edenham Church of England Primary School Welcome to our new Senior Teacher, Michael Pasqualino who started at the Edenham CE School this January. Michael has moved from Peterborough to teach in a Y5/6 mixed class, and take a leadership role in school with a particular focus on assessment and pupil progress. If any LAAT schools have expertise you would be willing to share in either the mixed Y5/6 teaching aspect or leading on assessment, we would be glad to hear from you to arrange a visit. 3
East Ravendale Church of England Primary School A new office block was blessed by the Rt Reverend Dr David Court, The Bishop of Grimsby, at the beginning of the autumn term. Bishop David led collective worship in St Martin s Church, before walking (with the children singing as they walked behind) along the new path to the school office. The office move has left space for an extra classroom and two small work areas. Year 5 and 6 had the opportunity to work with Garsington Opera to prepare a performance of Handel s Semele. Performers from the opera company spent a day in school with the children to rehearse selected scenes from the opera ready to perform (with a number of other schools) on the stage at Grimsby Auditorium. The show was watched by parents, family and friends. 4
26 children spent a night at a Youth Hostel in the Peak District in September. They took part in an Alex Rider Spy Academy. The character in Anthony Horowitz s books helped bring to life team building challenges and spy training that tested the children's mettle as potential new secret agents. Ignite your student s imaginations enjoy adventures in the great outdoors and spark a love of reading with our two YHA Alex Rider packages: Alex Rider Spy Academy and Alex Rider Mission briefing. The agents build fires and shelter before code breaking. It was a great start to the school year and really helped build a team sprit for the challenges ahead. The Wainfleet Magdalen Church of England Primary School Year 6 class assembly on a text book read through our topic 'Stone Age'. The children acted out the 'Stone Age Boy' story to the rest of the school and parents. 5

Weston St Mary CE Primary School The pupils of Weston have been delighted to welcome Scout the dog from Pets as Therapy, along with his owner Lorraine, to support them with their reading. Scout and Lorraine joined us during a Collective Worship and have now started participating in a guided reading session each week with some of our pupils. The pupils have thoroughly enjoyed working with Scout and particularly enjoy getting to stroke him at the end of the sessions! 7
Bishop s Ready for School Fund The LAAT Team The Bishop of Lincoln s Ready For School Fund aims to support schoolchildren who are lacking the things they need in order to confidently access the full life of school and the curriculum. Grants are made through the fund to head teachers so that they may seek to meet some of the identified needs of individual pupils. Items such as revision booklets, coats, school uniform or PE kit, lunchboxes, cookery ingredients or art or maths equipment are just some examples of where the fund can be put to work, with the fund guided by an awareness of the effect on a child of being unable to participate in school activities alongside their peers because of belonging to a family living in poverty. The fund is a practical expression of the diocesan central staff s commitment to service as an outworking of and central to faith. The prayer is that funds will continue to meet the very real social needs in our schools and witness to the generosity of God through His people. Every penny raised will, through Headteachers, go to the pupils thanks to the generosity of the Lincoln Diocesan Trust and Board of Finance (LDTBF) in administering the fund at no cost. To date, more than 5000 has been raised as a result of annual Sale of Work at Lincoln Christmas Market, sponsorship of diocesan staff in running the City of Lincoln 10k and donations.
