The School Uniform

THE UNIFORM SHOP Pupils attending the Junior School (Y1-3) and Prep Schools (Y4-8) of The Cathedral Grammar School wear formal uniform. For sport, there are specified physical education and team uniforms. In the interests of ensuring uniformity, all items are purchased from the Uniform Shop, located on the school s campus. The Uniform Shop stocks new clothing, black school shoes, Grammar backpacks and sports bags. A full range of quality second-hand clothing, bags and sporting equipment is also available. Staff in the Uniform Shop are highly experienced and knowledgeable about the uniform requirements of each year-group level. As current and former parents, their knowledge is practical and real! They can answer any question you may have and will help you with any outfitting needs. Parents of new pupils should make an appointment with the Uniform Shop manager to outfit the complete uniform. Name labels (for internal and external placement) can be ordered through the Uniform Shop at any time. Every item of clothing which comes to school must be named, and with the name of the current owner. After all, every day we have at least 300 shirts and 600 socks in school! A dry-cleaning service is available through the Uniform Shop at the end of each term. The Uniform Shop accepts payment at the time of purchase by EFTPOS, credit card, cheque or cash. There is a 3% surcharge on any purchase made using a credit card. Uniform Shop Hours: Mondays am pm Fridays am pm Holiday hours are published before each holiday period. Appointments can be made at other times by arrangement with the manager. Uniform Shop Manager: Ms Linda Hazel uniformshop@cathedralgrammar.school.nz

FORMAL UNIFORM Pupils in Y1-8 wear their formal uniform to and from school during the school day, and on formal occasions beyond school, such as Cathedral services, music performances and educational visits. The formal uniforms for Junior and Prep School pupils, are detailed and illustrated on the following pages. Blazers and caps (for the boys), berets (for girls Y1-3) or hats (for girls Y4-8) are worn between home and school. These items are taken off upon arrival at school and hung in each pupil s own locker during the day. If the journey home involves a detour elsewhere the supermarket, for example, the blazer, tie, and cap / beret / hat should be worn as these garments are part of the formal school uniform. Likewise, if a pupil goes out of school during the day for an appointment, these garments should be worn. The only exception is for pupils cycling to and from school who, of course, must wear a helmet instead of a cap / hat. However, cyclists must have their caps / hats in school each day in case their class goes off site for any reason. The only way to name a cap, beret or hat effectively is to iron or sew on a label; biro is seldom effective, legible or long-lasting. Senior blazers are worn by pupils in Y7&8. The senior blazer is distinguished by a ribbon lining the collar, lapels and plackets. Year 6 pupils may opt to hand in their blazers after Prize Giving, and the Uniform Shop will arrange for these blazers to be dry-cleaned and ribbonned during the summer holiday. Pupils then collect their blazers the week before the new school year begins. Alternatively, Y6 pupils may need a new blazer for their senior years: a new blazer may be fitted to which the ribbon can then be attached, or a second-hand senior blazer may be purchased. Ties are part of the formal uniform. A maroon tie is worn by boys in Y1-7 (Terms I-IV) and by girls in Y1-7 (Terms II & III only). Year 8 pupils are awarded their Y8 ties at the beginning of their final year to designate their position as Y8 Mentor Leaders. For Y1-3 pupils still learning to tie a standard tie, a zip tie is available. Each pupil has a jersey (boys) or guernsey (girls). These garments are for warmth in the classroom and outside during breaks. Blazers, tracksuit jackets and fleeces are not worn in classrooms for warmth. Each pupil requires a jersey or guernsey in school every day, regardless of the temperature and their desire to wear it. These garments are essential, summer or winter, to keep your child warm in the event of a prolonged evacuation outdoors due to any future emergency situations. Boys may wear long or short-sleeved shirts throughout the year but require one long-sleeved shirt for formal occasions. Once a Cathedral chorister has achieved full membership of the Cathedral Choir, (usually some time in Y5), he will be awarded his Cathedral pocket for his blazer and is then entitled to wear black socks. These chorister socks are worn throughout the year.

Garters are available to hold up boys formal school socks. The hemline of each girl s summer dress and winter pinafore (Y1-3) or summer skirt and winter kilt (Y4-8) must measure 5cm below the centre of her kneecap. This is to avoid the Polly long-frock syndrome where a girl s skirt is too long to allow her to run freely and play safely on the adventure playgrounds. Pupils wear black, lace-up shoes or T-bar shoes (girls) as part of their formal uniform. Velcro fastenings, black sport-shoe designs, slip-on shoes, ballet slippers, and any other non-lace-up shoe styles or colours are not uniform items and so are not permitted to be worn. During Terms I & IV, pupils may wear brown sandals during the school day, although socks and black shoes must be worn for off-site visits, formal occasions and formal days during these terms, including Cathedral services, Awards Assemblies and Prize Giving. Formal black shoes should be polished weekly to manage the inevitable playground scuffs. HAIR The wearing of hair is part of the formal school uniform. As such, it is a matter of respect for our uniform, required from pupils and parents, that pupils should wear their hair in a manner that does not attract unusual attention. Where respect is not shown, the Principal, Deputy Head or Dean may require a pupil to wear another style. This may include the requirement to have another haircut. Staff may from time to time remind pupils individually and parents collectively of the need for haircuts. No hair product should be worn with formal uniform, or physical education or team uniforms, unless required for a production or performance to an audience. Dyed and bleached hair are not permitted. Boys hair should be cut clear of the shirt collar and the ears. The fringe should be of one even length, no longer than the eyebrows. Hair should be a uniform length, i.e. the same length all over the head, (e.g. not short sides and longer on top.) Hair should be not shorter than a number 5 razor. Boys hair which is naturally very curly should be kept cut to a respectful length/ height. Girls hair should be free of the face. Where a fringe is worn, it should be of one even length, no longer than the eyebrows. If no fringe, the hair must be kept free of the face using a hair band or clips. Short hair should be clear of the collar, of a uniform length, (e.g. not short sides and longer on top) and no shorter than a number 5 razor. Hair longer than the collar must be tied back or plaited. Girls hair bands, ties, ribbons and clips must be coloured maroon, black, silver or white. The Uniform Shop has a range of fashionable, correctly coloured, haircontrol devices.

MAKE-UP Make-up of any type, including nail polish, is not worn by pupils at school. Exceptions may be made rarely on special occasions such as face painting at Friends Association and BOSS fund-raising events or for musical and drama productions. Should a pupil wish to present a medical-cosmetic reason to wear make-up, permission should be sought from the pupil s Dean. WATCHES & JEWELLERY Watches may be worn by older pupils. If a watch proves to be more than a mere chronograph, and become a distraction, the owner will be invited to leave this watch / camera / Fitbit phone at home. Visible jewellery is not desirable. Boys may not wear any visible jewellery. If, for cultural or family reasons, a girl or boy must wear an item of jewellery (other than earrings), it must not be visible and must be removed if so requested during physical education, sport, outdoor education or any other active school trip or activity. If for cultural or family reasons, a girl must wear earrings, only the following is permissible: one single 3mm (or smaller) gold or silver stud worn in each earlobe; and these studs must be removed if so requested during physical education, sport, outdoor education or any other active school trip or activity. Watches and jewellery of any sort are worn at the owner s risk. The school and staff collectively and individually take no responsibility under any circumstances for lost watches or items of jewellery.

PHYSICAL EDUCATION The Junior and Prep School uniforms to be worn for physical education lessons and sports activities, inter-house competitions and school championships are detailed and illustrated on the following pages. Each pupil has a school sports bag in which PE & sports uniform is transported to and from school and events, and in which PE & sports uniforms are stored in the pupil s locker. Each Prep School pupil has a two-piece school tracksuit, and each Junior School pupil has a maroon polar fleece and a pair of black tracksuit pants. These garments require a black, embroidered name label to be sewn onto a specific external position. These name labels are ordered by the Uniform Shop, and shop staff can stitch these to the garments, or will explain the exact label placement. Additional external name labels may be ordered for other garments. These labels are designed to be removed and re-used on the tracksuit as Junior School pupils move up into the Prep Schools. The maroon polar fleece is an optional garment for Prep School pupils, and can be worn during play times or under the tracksuit. The fleece may not be worn in the classroom; it is not an alternative to the jersey (boys) or guernsey (girls). Each pupil requires their tracksuit or fleece / tracksuit pants in school every day, regardless of their physical education commitments. These garments are essential, summer and winter, to keep your child warm in the event of a prolonged evacuation outdoors due to any emergency situation. Occasionally pupils may go home in physical education uniform (e.g. on Thursday after Prep School sport or after a Junior School club). Unless it is very hot, this means in physical education uniform with a full tracksuit or fleece / tracksuit pants over the top. The physical education uniform and formal uniform do not mix! Pupils wear one version of uniform or the other. Wearing physical education uniform with a blazer or with black shoes are not acceptable looks. If a pupil does not have a full tracksuit and the correct shoes, the only option is to change back into formal uniform to go home. The 1 st XI cricket team, for which the school blazer is part of a player s travelling uniform, is the only exception to this. A sunhat is part of the physical education uniform for Terms I & IV: a maroon sunhat with a neck flap for Y1-3 pupils; black sunhats for Y4-8 pupils. Cricket sunhats are optional for cricket players. Sunhats are required in school each day during Terms I & IV to be worn for morning tea and lunch breaks. The only way to name the black sunhat is to iron or sew on a label. Each pupil is expected to have a small tube of sunblock for personal use. This sunblock should be named, and kept in a re-sealable bag in the pupil s sports bag. Pupils wear sports shoes for physical education, sporting events, and morning tea and lunch play times. These sports shoes are not a fashion statement; they should be white or muted in colour (i.e. white, grey) with perhaps a coloured branding stripe or flash. Despite the current fashion trends, research amongst local shoe suppliers and the uniforms of visiting schools indicate that it is possible avoid purchasing highly coloured shoes, so please do so. Fluorescent or bright colours are not permitted, other than on the branding, (e.g. on the three Adidas stripes / Nike tick).

Junior School Physical Education Uniform (Y1-3) White & Maroon shirt White shorts White socks Sports shoes Maroon sunhat Black tracksuit pants Maroon polar fleece Junior sports bag If playing winter sport for the school, then additional items may include: Black Hockey shorts Maroon Hockey socks Maroon Hockey shirt Maroon Netball shirt Velco skort Preparatory Schools Physical Education Uniform (Y4-8) House shirt Black shorts Tracksuit jacket and pants White socks Sports shoes Black sunhat Prep sports bag Optional: Maroon polar fleece Boys Winter PE Uniform Striped rugby jersey (Terms II & III) Optional for girls

Cricket & Tennis White & Maroon shirt White sports shorts Tracksuit jacket and pants (Y4-8) Fleece / tracksuit pants (Y1-3) White ankle socks Sports shoes Black sunhat or black cap or cricket sunhat Optional: Maroon polar fleece SPORTS TEAMS The uniform requirements for wearing a tracksuit (Y4-8) or fleece / tracksuit pants (Y1-3) apply to a pupil representing the school as an individual, and in a team in any sporting event, be it a weekly competition, a one-off event or an interschool exchange. Year 3-8 pupils who play a Friday or Saturday winter code for a school team purchase their own team uniform. Hockey players must have their own mouthguards, shin pads and hockey sticks. Goalkeeping equipment and cricket gear are provided by the school so the purchase of items for these is optional. Year 4-8 pupils who represent the school in a selected team (e.g. tennis, crosscountry, athletics) or an after-school club team (e.g. basketball, touch rugby) will be given a team singlet or shirt to wear for the event or season. These garments are bar-coded and scanned out under each pupil s name like a library book. A bond equivalent to the replacement cost of the garment is charged to the pupil s school account. Upon the return of the garment, washed and in good condition, the bond will be credited to the account, less a hire fee of $5.00 per event or $15.00 per season.

SWIMMING All pupils participate in school swimming events each year. Pre-School and Y1-5 pupils have blocks of swimming lessons, the school swimming sports (Y4-8) are held in February, and the Y4-8 outdoor education activities in Terms I & IV involve swimming. Each pupil requires a one-piece pair of swimming togs: not board shorts or a bikini school swimming is not a fashion show. The school does not have uniform togs but a selection of togs is available for purchase at the Uniform Shop. Goggles may also be purchased. Every Junior School pupil is expected to wear a swimming cap, both as an aid to managing hair and water-in-the-eyes issues, and to help keep the pupil warm during lessons. Girls with hair below collar length must wear swimming caps. School swimming caps are available for purchase at the Uniform Shop. BADGES The school has a wide range of badges which are worn on blazer lapels. These badges must be worn according to the Badge Policy. The photograph below shows on which lapel these badges should be worn. The triangular School Badge and the plain-coloured House bar badge are optional. These are available for purchase at the Uniform Shop. Maroon bar badges are presented to pupils as they represent the school in various teams, service groups and music ensembles. The Badge Policy outlines the criteria by which each maroon badge can be awarded. The cost of each badge is charged to the recipient s school account. If you do not wish your child to receive maroon badges, please notify the school office. The Badge Policy also outlines what other sort of badges (i.e. non-grammar ones) may be worn, when and for how long (e.g. badges for chess levels, Daffodil Day, school exchanges.) SENIOR BLAZERS (Y7&8) Senior blazers are worn by pupils in Y7&8. The senior blazer is distinguished by a ribbon lining the collar, lapels and plackets.
