1 FREWEN COLLEGE BOARDERS HANDBOOK Welcome to Frewen Boarding. This short handbook, written by the boarding staff, is designed to tell you briefly about boarding life - how boarders live here, the practicalities of daily living in a boarding community, the importance of communication and an open relationship between the pupils, parents, house staff, tutors and matrons. We very much hope that you will be happy and thrive in this happy, home from home environment. New Boarder Induction An induction programme is arranged for you as a new boarder when you start at Frewen. The timetable, daily and weekend routine, school layout, medical, spiritual and uniform matters will all be covered. As part of our peer support programme, every pupil will initially be paired with a mentor or a buddy usually, but not always in the same year group, who will support and assist you as you start to settle into life as a boarder. Each house has a common room where you may choose to spend your free time with other boarders. The rooms have large screen televisions and weekly age-appropriate movie nights are always popular. Computers are available in houses. Most pupils now bring laptops or tablets with them and the school has wireless internet. No pupils should be on their computers after lights out. The School has checks and filters in place to help you use the internet safely. Each house has a kitchenette for preparing and eating snacks, however, you are expected to go to all meals. House kitchens are stocked with bread, butter, milk, jam and spreads. Pupils are expected to wash up their own dishes and duty teams of pupils do a final tidy up each evening. Food is not permitted in the bedrooms. Please note that chewing gum is not permitted anywhere in the school grounds.

2 Evening activities include different sports depending on the season such as swimming, judo, tennis, football, dodgeball, as well as art club, chess, baking or cooking, use of the gym. Weekend trips have included a wide range of exciting activities such as indoor climbing, kayaking, crazy golf, ten-pin bowling, paintballing, laser tag, trampolining, theme parks, barbeques, theatre shows and catching up with the latest blockbuster movies. Money Unless otherwise requested by your parents, you will be given 5.00 a week and 5.00 on the weekend as pocket money. It is your responsibility to look after your belongings and money. You will be provided a lock box and key to store your valuables, but house staff can keep money for you if you prefer. Property and Damage Many boarders like to bring a few items from home and pin boards are provided to help decorate and personalise their room. Pupils should look after their own property and show respect for the property of others and of the school. Damages should be reported to House staff so that repairs can be made quickly. If damage is caused deliberately, the cost of repair may be charged to your parents bill and parents will be informed. Please make sure your belongings are named and insured where needed. You should never borrow items from others without asking. In the rare event of a suspected theft, it should be reported swiftly and will be investigated. Valuable items, passports and large amounts of money should be handed in to house staff for safekeeping.

3 The Laundry Laundry is done in the School laundry where staff will place clean laundry on your named shelf. You need to bring dirty washing to the laundry at breakfast and then collect it after school. Clothes should then be neatly put away or hung up. Bed linen is changed weekly, and you need to place used sheets and pillowcases in the laundry bags by 9.30pm on change-over day. Smalls should be packed into smalls bags. Fire Regulations and Practice Fire safety checks are carried out regularly and fire practices are held at least once a half term. You will be given instructions on your first visit to boarding. All electrical items will be tested (anything that plugs into a wall). If you are feeling ill It is very important that all medication is handed in to Matron who will discuss your own personal health plan with you. If you are ill during the day you will need to go to Matron. Matron will then decide what happens next and will tell boarding staff. If you are ill at night, get a roommate to come down to the staff flats with you or on your behalf where Mr Kirkwood or Ms Medcraft will help you. Don t feel alone! Missing home can be quite a normal part of settling into boarding life, so talk to your friends or house parents who will help you through. Bullying and unkindness are unacceptable and will be dealt with appropriately. Please speak to a member of staff if you have any concerns. The Frewen boarding community is small and homely so there is always someone on hand to help if you have any concerns or worries.

4 Registration, Coming and Going for Boarders The house staff have a duty to know the whereabouts and ensure the safety of every boarder at all times during the term. So please sign out and ask a member of staff for permission if you are going into the grounds or leaving the property. In or out at weekends? Parents should let house staff know by 9pm on Wednesday if you are going home for the weekend. This excludes regular arrangements. Weekly boarders may go home on Friday when their school commitments are complete and should return to the house either on Sunday evening by 9.30pm, having been fed, or on Monday morning in time for the start of the school day. Your parents must contact house staff via to confirm any changes to your normal routine. The boarding house times show where you may be outside of the school day.
