Introduction A warm welcome to everybody gathered here today. This is a very special AGM as this is the Silver Jubilee Year for Shishu Mandir. The last one year has been very important, for we are now crossing a milestone, and there has been considerable opportunity to take stock of the path that Shishu Mandir has taken thus far and the road ahead. Our celebration began on January 1 st when we had the inaugural of the School Extension Building and the Vocational Training Centre. Joining us were 2500 guests, including members of Hella s family from Germany and the United States, 36 friends and supporters from Germany, Shishu Mandir EC members, children and staff of our school and their families and friends. The two buildings were inaugurated by Hella followed by lighting of the lamp. The celebrations were then opened with fabulous performances by the children. Our friends from Germany happily participated with a cheerful song. On this occasion, the biography of Hella, which was an effort of two years by Aravinda, a Bangalore based author, and Hella herself, was released by Mr. Dilip Ranjekar, Chief Executive of Azim Premji Foundation. Further the Souvenir, compiled by Aravinda and designed by Kamal, a professional designer from Chennai, was released by Dr. Xavier Alphonse, Director of the ICRDCE (Indian Centre for Research and Development of Community Education), the CD of the newly finished Shishu Film, an informative documentary of seven minutes, was released by Mr. Jayaram, Ex-President of Krishnarajapuram CMC and the School Songbook, newly edited by Ms. Verena Lowinski, a German volunteer, was released by Mrs. Santhosh Vas, the Chairperson of CWC (Child Welfare Committee). Another highlight of the Silver Jubilee Year was the Shishu Mandir calendar, which was distributed to all Shishu Mandir children and staff as well as Society members and local donors. The celebrations for the day concluded with the School Anthem sung by the whole Shishu Family, which was a touching moment. This could only be followed by a sumptuous dinner for everyone who attended this impressive event. A great start to an important year in Shishu Mandir s history! I now present an overview of the year s happenings. There are four main areas the Home, the School, the Vocational Training Centre, which we call as Community College, and the Village Development Work. We will go over each of these, and along with significant developments during the year we will also highlight our requirements. Following this, we will elucidate our goals for the year. 2

Society Also for our Society it has been a year of sorts. The oncoming Silver Jubilee Celebrations imprinted themselves on everybody s mind throughout the year and especially so during the last three months. It was just an overwhelmingly huge event for our small Society which kept everyone active and involved. Among the Society members the greatest brunt fell on Devadas Mundhra, who had to finish the construction of the buildings and arrangements of the surrounding area according to the time limit, and sure enough it was finished on the minute! We held 6 EC meetings and 1 Annual General Body meeting. We could welcome 5 new members, but also lost 6 members. The number of members is 25 this year. We hope that the present year will bring a drastic change, particularly in the aftermath of the Silver Jubilee celebrations. New Members Rogeria Roares Ravi Kumar S. Bharathi E. Aravinda A. Sankaran Sathyamoorthy Outgoing Members Dominic Vijay M.H. Hidayatulla Flexy Crasto Sangeetha Saxena Pramila Priyadarshini Basu R. EC Members Mr. Ramachnadra Seshagiri Ms. Indira Swaminathan Mr. Devadas Mundhra Ms. Catherine Selvarani Mr. Arnold Mathias Mr. Venu V. Ms. Hella Mundhra President VicePresident Secretary Joint Secretary Treasurer EC members without portfolio EC members without portfolio Important Achievements of the Society in Approval of the Budget The budget was officially approved by the EC and the Finance Sub-Committee Members in their meeting on March 4 th 2008 and was sent to the German Society for approval. Attempts on local Fund Raising Since the financial situation in germany is constantly deteriorating, thus jeopardising our financial stability, attempts have been made locally to attract funds in India itself. IT companies employees have been invited to see our establishment and its special outlook. 3

Though all visitors go back impressed and inspired, no big impact of financial support has evolved so far. Our aim is to raise 10% more of the annual financial requirements on a yearly basis. Following the requests of our President Mr. Seshagiri a short documentary film was made to have a means of advertisement in hand for corporate firms. It took us a struggle of two years, but it got finished in time for the Silver Jubilee and it is an impressive walk through the history of Shishu Mandir. Also a Corpus Fund to the tune of 6% of the annual expenses was envisaged to be built up for any unforeseen event. For the past year an amount of 10 lakhs was set aside in a fixed deposit for this purpose. Formation of the Finance Sub-Committee According to our amended Constitution we formed a Finace Sub-Committee to oversee all matters concerning our financial management. The committee consisted of Mr. Ramachandra Seshagiri Mr. Arnold Mathias Dr. Duarte Barreto Mr. Baskaran J. President Treasurer Member Member Amendments of Higher education policy The HE Policy required some additional rules, as we had set a pattern of rules for the main transition steps only, from SSLC to PUC/ Diploma, from PUC to Bachelor and so on. But the in-between years from PUC I to PUC II and Diploma I to Diploma II etc. had not been considered and regularised. So in a team of 5 people, involving two advanced students of Shishu Mandir, the rules were framed and fixed. Additionally the rules for repayment of expenses after the 10 th standard were finalised. Subsequently they were accepted and approved by the EC. The Policy as well as the rules for repayment were handed over to the students concerned and a detailed information about the spirit behind these regulations was given to many of the old students. Construction Policy Based on the ideas of Mr. Anand a policy for the construction activity in the villages was developed. It envisaged a just use of the donations for this purpose, taking all villagers into consideration, who possess a site and are belonging to the poorest of the poor. Conditions were worked out which safeguard the interests of the wife and/or the children of the family. 4

Home This year the highest number of children in the Home was 34 with Alice as the House Mother, Savi as the kitchen-in-charge and the Aunties. Apart from the adoption children 5 children came in newly for taking residence with us. Of significance is the resignation of our Educator, Ingrid, who is required to take care of her mother and who will therefore not be able to give her time anymore. Currently, we have no one to take her place. As before, adolescence has once again brought in a few troubles. Indrani and Beena chose to leave the Home and Kartikeyan was asked to leave, as he was determined to break the laid down rules and took to smoking in the Home. Viji left the Home following her marriage in January. She now lives in Chennai, but is in regular contact with us. Piyush and Pratik opted to move out to live independently, as they were both demanding more freedom than a home can give. Pratik, who also had problems of subordination, had to leave the Home. He, however, stayed in regular touch with us, which is indeed heartening. He also played a vital role in forming a youth organisation for the support of needy people like poor persons with serious health problems. Divya, who had been with us for nine years, decided to go back to her family, since she felt that her presence was needed there. It is not unusual for children to make a choice to leave Shishu, and although sometimes the relations are strained for some time, there is a hope that they will mend in due course. Janardhan, one of the earliest Shishu children, came back one day out of the blue and has renewed contact with us after four long years of longing for Shishu Mandir. As far as academics go, two of our home children have done exceptionally well in their studies, and we would like to acknowledge them here: Manjula secured 83.5% in the SSLC exam, the highest score by a Shishu child in 25 years; Manjula is now studying in the 1 st PUC specialising in Computer Science, and Karthik has completed his 4-year BE degree, another first for us. Guru, who had stayed with us for 13 years, finished her SSLC and joined a three-year diploma course in Fashion Design. We would like to use this opportunity to acknowledge the support of a few people whose participation and support has created a significant impact on the children s performance: Ruchi Gupta, who has been a regular visitor on Sunday mornings to teach the 10 th standard children Maths. Her commitment has been instrumental in helping some of our children to pass in their exam. Ruchi will soon be shifting out of Bangalore, and we will miss her active participation. Rogeria, who is always there, when help is needed, be it cutting the children s hair or engaging them in project work or backing up, when Alice or Ingrid had to go on leave. She is a good friend to the staff and the children, and her support is invaluable. 5

Adoptions Altogether 11 children were admitted for adoption in the course of the year. 7 adoptions were finalised out of which 6 were in-country adoptions and 1 was an inter-country placement. It was an American family who came forward to adopt Dipti, a child with special needs. Another child, 5-year-old Ambika, is waiting for adoption. She also is a special needs child, as she has a heart defect and a hearing problem. Both have been surgically repaired. The cost of the heart operation amounted to Rs. 1 lakh out of which 75% were borne by the Rotarians and the rest by a Shishu Mandir Society member. Ambika is doing well and her adoption process in ongoing. Shishu Mandir is recognised for in-country and inter-country adoption and also as Fit- Person Institution. Though the renewal procedures are always tedious and troublesome, we managed to get the in-country licence renewed for two years. Special Support Our past child and present Cashier of the school, Geetha, who is suffering from kidney failure and Hepatitis C, has been supported for all medical needs for the last 11 years. She is undergoing dialysis three times a week and has to take very expensive medicines like Erythropoetin every second day. Her monthly expenses for her medical treatment amount to Rs per month. Another child with severe medical problems is Manas, a case of high-grade Autism, who is supported with Rs per month for his medical and educational special needs. Volunteers We have had four volunteers this year from Germany Ruth, Christina, Melina and Nirmala, who is an adopted child from Shishu. They stayed for periods between three weeks and six months. They engage themselves in the free-time occupations of the children and have a very close observation of their social attitudes. We get important information from them to become aware of the problems within the group. In spite of occasional problems with the volunteers themselves, which are based on cultural differences, we continue to see the advantages of their services and the exchange of cultural values in this scheme. Fund Raising The annual Christmas Bazaar was a great success also this year, and we managed to raise Rs 43,912. At Diwali a Bazaar was also organised on similar lines, but it was not very successful. An amount of Rs was collected. With thanks we acknowledge the contributions of certain IT Companies as n-vidya, RMZ, Thorogood, Akamai, Flextronics and Pantaloon. Where we require support We would like to find an Educator for the Home who is able to spend around five hours every evening with the children to help them in their education as well as in their personal development. 6

Our social worker, Jisha will be resigning shortly as she is getting married and moving out of Bangalore. A Social Worker is an immediate requirement. Manjula s performance so far indicates that she too may pursue a professional degree, and we need to collect a corpus towards that from now. As the prices in Bangalore are increasing drastically, which cannot be met anymore from the German contribution alone, we require also local support towards funding the expenses for the Home. 7

School We have had a busy year at school with the Silver Jubilee celebrations. But the academic year began with the addition of 6 teachers. The attrition rate continues to be high. 4 teachers from the previous year have resigned. For the extension building 2 new staff members was taken in for the maintenance and for the whole school complex a watchman was also employed. The school expansion also brought in a new Prep A section and we now have 20 new students as opposed to 10 of the previous years. The school strength is now at 139 (106 girls and 33 boys). Of these, 102 children are from the vicinity of the school, 20 are our Home children and the remaining 17 are from Ulsoor. The last academic year also saw 5 dropouts, mostly due to disciplinary reasons or for their inability to cope with lessons. A total of 7 children were detained, mostly from the lower classes. 5 children took up the SSLC exam in 2008 and as every year they were provided with the opportunity to reside at the school premises for three months to prepare for it. The efforts paid off and all of them have passed, with three students securing a First Class and two, a Second Class. The 8 th std. children appeared for the Open Basic Education Exam of the National Institute of Open Schooling (NIOS). The day scholars are given the opportunity to do their homework at school, as we provide a supervised study atmosphere after school hours by deputing one teacher for this task. Also Saturdays are organised for various activities like reading, playing games, cleaning and getting their lunch at school. All children take their baths at school, since we have the bathing facility with solar heated water. Koushalya M. and Bhubaneshwari V. attended a dance course in theory and practice and obtained the qualification in the junior grade of the Special Dance Examination conducted by the Government of Karnataka. The fee for this government exam was Rs per child. In the summer vacations 60 children were taken to Tumkur for basketball training for six days. They were trained by Mr. Mahajan, a passionate basketball promoter, who managed to inspire them with a new enthusiasm. The whole of the Dassera Holidays were used for training 40 children in folkdances like Tappatam, Karagam and Hoilattam and another folk dance Gummi was taught to the women of Jyothinagar. Two professionals were hired for eight days for this purpose. We would like to acknowledge the support of Bettina, a professional educator from Germany, who spent her annual vacation with us. She brought in new ideas in education and it was a great learning experience for the Prep teachers. She also prepared study materials for their use. A special donation was received from Mr. Flock, who sponsored sports shoes for the entire school. Another sizeable donation was received from Mr. Sathyamoorthy, a Shishu Mandir Society member, towards the purchase of three new computers for the teachers and a contribution of provisions worth Rs. 11,000 per month from Mr. Saravanan, an unknown well-wisher. We would also like to acknowledge Pratik s involvement in organising a competition for NGOs in the city. Shishu School participated enthusiastically winning the first prize of Rs. 7500, which was used to purchase books for the library, and the Home children the second prize. 8

Our students also participated in the first anniversary celebrations of the Cosmos Mall. They put up a show of several dances. An amount of Rs 7,274 was raised at the event plus Rs. 10,000 from Cosmos itself. As a continuation of the last year s personality development programme Dr. Shoiba Saldanha and Dr. Sangeetha Saxena from the organisation Enfold Pro-Active Health Trust again organised a programme for our children with the topics Life Skills, Sexuality and Personal Safety. Our teachers Stella Delvie and Sundari underwent a training in Grow By Reading at Hippocampus Reading Foundation and brought it forward to the staff, who implemented the new ideas in their classes. She participates in quarterly meetings and networks with other librarians regularly as part of the programme. Our teacher Meena Nirmala gave regular classes on advanced English to all the teachers. Similarly the teachers benefited from witnessing Hella s demonstration classes and followup discussions during her two visits of the year. Educational Sponsorships A total of 80 children are supported at outside schools for their entire needs as educational, food, medical and transport. They come under different categories as Past Shishu Mandir students, Family Planning Sponsorship and children with extreme needs due to unnatural deaths of their fathers. Higher Education of our Students Our support for Shishu children continues throughout their college-level studies. In this academic year, 9 have been supported at Pre-University/Diploma Courses, 4 in Degree Courses, 1 in Bachelor of Engineering and 2 in Diploma in Nursing. Furthermore, we provide them with all medical support, materials for their education including computers, course connected trips of their colleges, a food sponsorship of Rs. 300 per month and transport charges. Savings Scheme We have tried to insist on parents saving whatever possible for their children through the Post Office Monthly Savings scheme where an individually chosen amount is remitted per child. To this corpus the amounts received as birthday gifts are added. The money will in all likelihood be used for the child s higher education, marriage or self employment. Where we require support We are in urgent need of an English teacher as the existing teacher has resigned after the start of the academic year. One of our social workers has also resigned last month and we would need someone to fill her post. Our requirement for sponsor parents has doubled from 10 to 20 this year, as we have begun having two sections per class. Local sponsor parents would be very welcome. Swimming has always been part of the curriculum for the 4 th standard. Unfortunately this year, we were unable to offer it, as there was no one who could conduct these classes. We would greatly appreciate if someone could volunteer to teach our 4 th standard swimming. 9

Salaries for our teachers need to be raised drastically, if we hope for a decrease in the attrition rate. Our library could do with more books, reference books, educational CDs and DVDs and maps. We require more lab equipment. 10

Community College The highlight of the Silver Jubilee Celebrations has been the launch of the Vocational Training Centre which we named as Community College. So far, the Tailoring and Computer Education units have begun and we have a total of 56 students. The college follows a semester system and the courses are for a duration of one year. Besides the core subject English, Life Skills and Games are included in the curriculum. For the Tailoring Classes we employed a teacher with a diploma in teachers training in tailoring. For Computer Education we deputed our office secretary, Mrs. Kala, to the Community College for a course of two months. These students were taught English by a temporary teacher, Sandesha, and the Life Skills Sessions and Games were conducted by our Social Worker Victor, who also did the selection in the villages. The main equipment for a course in Carpentry and Electricals has been procured from Germany, but the courses have not begun yet. We acknowledge the enormous efforts of Mr. Gorgas in Germany for having masterminded the collection and transportation of the goods filling one container to the brim. We would like to also acknowledge Mr. Anand for his vision of the Community College and making it come true. We would also like to thank Devadas for his constant support in supervising the construction of these buildings and being just a phone call away. Where we require support An administrator to oversee the workings of the Community College Trainers for Carpentry, Electricals and Computer Education Support for the salaries for the trainers 11

Village Development Work As has been our policy, we continue to support the communities in and around our school area. The majority of our students are from the surrounding 10 villages of Kithiganur, Kithiganur Colony, Janata Colony, Hallahalli, Bhattarahalli, Priyankanagar, Vijanapura, Jyothinagar, Hella Nagar and Anandapura. Three evening study centres, two of which were set up last year in Bhattarahalli and Deenabandhu Nagar, are functioning well. The supervising teacher is paid an honorarium by Shishu Mandir, and additionally Shishu Mandir provided educational materials and Christmas gifts to them. 6 self help groups (SHGs) are functioning well under the guidance of our Social Worker, Mr. Victor, who even meets them on Sundays. The Shishu Mandir Community Hall in Kithiganur, which was built by Shishu Mandir in 2002, received a compound wall in front of the building to safeguard the land around the Hall. It is benefiting 60 children in a crèche and about 90 children in evening study. Apart from that the hall is used for marriages and government vaccination schemes. A medical support of life saving importance was given to a school child s mother, Vimala, who was suffering from a severe hyperthyroidism. She was unable to consult a doctor of significance and was in a very critical stage. House constructions were carried out for 5 of our students, with the support of Mr. Werner from Germany, who always brings in some ecologically relevant ideas. We have made many attempts to train women in masonry and painting and continue in our endeavours to teach them economically viable skills. Where we require support Land for the construction of a settlement of several houses Land for more Community Halls Financial support for the evening study teachers and social worker Medical support for expensive treatments 12

Conclusion We are filled with gratitude to have been able to fulfil so many projects in the course of 25 years. We hope that more people in and outside of the Society will get the inspiration to devote their time and energy to the cause of the downtrodden, who are depending on us more than ever before.
