Newsletter of the College Register Volume 8, Semester 1, 2016 An Independent Co-educational Catholic College for Years 7 12 TRINITY imes Dear Members of the Trinity Family, Usually, when we talk about poverty we are referring to the lack of food, clean water, adequate shelter and basic services such as education and health care. However, there is an unseen poverty that has to do with our spirituality; with this poverty we associate a lack of belief or uncertainty about our place in the world and the meaning behind our lives. It could be said that some Christians might try to simply go it alone in life without waiting or listening for God s presence so they can go forward together. Our God is instantly available to us because His Spirit is within us: God s Spirit lives in you. Rom. 8:9. God is here waiting patiently for us to acknowledge His presence. To know that God is always with us and that we are never alone can be transforming. I need only to be open and receptive to God s quiet presence, listening to His encouragement, accepting His guidance. By His presence, God is revealing that we are never alone in any of the moments of our lives, even though some of these moments are dark. God never wills that we suffer, but He is there to help us make the best of it. Rather than going it alone, we ought to rest awhile and let God love us. In the process of turning to God, we begin to discover deep within ourselves a core of peace and courage. We begin to understand, if only briefly, what St Paul meant when he said,... the life I live is not my own; Christ is living in me. Gal.2 20, 21. None of our relationships ever become what we hope it to be, because we fall short in loving unconditionally. But God does love unconditionally and is waiting, patiently, for us to acknowledge His presence. Brother John Hilet, fms Principal

Mrs Sally De Maria, Mrs Lyndall Smith, Mrs Marion Murray and Mrs Denise O'Brien with their Champagnat Day Awards Champagnat Day 2016 The Feast Day of Saint Marcellin Champagnat was celebrated on Friday 3rd June (3 days before the actual Feast Day). Marcellin Champagnat lived a simple spiritual life. His Spirituality was one of passion and compassion. Passion for God and Compassion for people. In 2016 this simple spirituality developed in the 19th century reflects Pope Francis Jubilee Year of Mercy. Pope Francis simple slogan for this Jubilee Year is: Mercy This is the name of our God. Our Marist beginnings were shaped by the caring relationship between a young country priest and a group of young people, living in a time of great social turmoil. They lived with great simplicity and unity. Their days spent in learning how to read, write and teach and in manual work that sustained them economically. Our Liturgy focused on the foundation of the Marist Traditions as well as a brief history about when the Marist Brothers arrived in Australia. Following this we heard from our Assistant Principal of Senior School, Mrs Karen Davies, reflect on her experiences on the Marist Pilgrimage which she was privileged to be a part of earlier this year. Mrs Davies visited the Holy Lands, Rome and France. Following the Liturgy our Principal, Br John Hilet, presented the Champagnat Day Awards. These awards are presented to staff as acknowledgement of significant service to Marist education. We presented three staff members for 25 years service in Marist Schools. These staff members were: Mrs Marion Murray, Mrs Lyndall Smith and Mrs Sally De Maria. We were also fortunate to celebrate the amazing service of Br Julian Casey, the current leader of our Lismore Marist Community. Br Julian celebrated his 60th Jubilee as a Marist Brother. The spirit of both St Marcellin and Nano Nagle continues to live on here at Trinity as we continue their mission of providing an excellent Catholic Education for all our students. Mr Luke Miller Director of Mission. Some of the 2015 HSC Achievers HSC 2015 Achievers Academic Assembly The College community acknowledged the efforts of some of our HSC students from 2015 at an Academic Assembly on Friday 5th February. Unfortunately, not all of the students were able to be with us on the day as some had already commenced employment or pre-university studies. Each of these students achieved to a very high standard during the 2015 HSC and each was presented with a commemorative plaque in recognition of their efforts. Band 6 results do not just happen. They require hard work and dedication on the part of both the students and their teachers Evie Sharman College Dux At the Academic Assembly we also announced Evie Sharman as the 2015 College Dux. Evie is an extraordinary young woman and her announcement as Dux is the result of many hours of hard work and dedication. Not just in Year 12, but over the entirety of her education. Triplets Begin Their Future At Southern Cross University After completing their high school time at Trinity the McCalman triplets Abigail, Andrew and William have now begun their adventure at Southern Cross University s Lismore campus. Abigail is studying a Bachelor of Nursing. Andrew, who has a deep interest in the environment, is doing the Bachelor of Science and William the Bachelor of Sport and Exercise Science. Andrew, who was ranked in the top 10 for each of his senior subjects, said he was excited to be at university and was happy he could stay at home while studying. 2 Trinity Times Semester 1, 2016

Solomon Islands Immersion Group 2016 Solomon Islands 2016 A remarkable, eye-opening and life changing help explain our Immersion to the Solomon Islands. A group of 8 students and 3 teachers departed on a 2-week adventure of a lifetime arriving in Honiara on 18th March. We were greeted at the airport by the local Tenaru students, who kindly escorted us back to St. Joseph s Tenaru. Our first Sunday consisted of the students participating in local tribal dancing and expressing dance moves never before seen by Trinity students. The next week consisted of bonding with the Year 10 and Year 11 class groups, teaching them games and songs. We worked with the students to plant and harvest rice, cook and clean the dining area. It was a privilege to be a part of the Tenaru community s celebration of Easter, we were made to feel very welcome by the students who gave each of us special roles in the Easter celebrations. The Tuesday of the second week we left for Vasali with some students from St Joseph s which is a Catholic Sister s community right on a coral reef. We got to know the local sisters and went snorkelling into the unknown depths of the abyss. Getting to know the Solomon Islander students has changed our lives forever. It has been an amazing experience that we will never forget. We highly recommend this Immersion experience, especially to Year 10 students who can apply for this opportunity. Jack Murray and Patrick Connelly, Yr 11 4

Santa Teresa Immersion Group 2016 Santa Teresa 2016 Imagine a group of 6 students and 2 teachers, setting off to spend 12 days in the middle of Outback Australia helping in an Aboriginal community, an hour south-east of Alice Springs. We spent the first three days of our trip travelling Uluru, Kata Tjuta and Kings Canyon with a group of adventurers, soaking up as much of the aboriginal culture, native species, the surrounding land and The Dreaming as we could. We travelled by bus along a bumpy road from Alice Springs to Santa Teresa (Ltyentye Apurte), a wonderful small town filled with many smiling faces and kind, welcoming people. We spent 8 days in the community helping as much as we could, wherever our services were needed. Our days consisted of early mornings preparing breakfast, morning teas and lunches in the canteen for the children attending school, followed by helping the women in the Women s Centre collecting blankets from houses and delivering lunch packs to community members, assisting in the classrooms and helping prepare the Church for liturgies and masses for the coming Easter celebrations. It was a life changing experience to all of us and if given the opportunity I m sure everyone would do it all again. On behalf on the group, I would recommend this trip to students in Year 10 considering applying for Immersion as it is truly a life changing and eye opening experience. Shelby Glavocih, Yr 11 St Joseph s Tenaru Australia Immersion We have been very fortunate to have an Immersion group from St Joseph s Tenaru in the Solomon Islands. Two teachers, Mr John Nuu and Madame Salome Lagafoli and four students spent a week at Trinity. The students were billeted by Trinity students who had been on Immersion to the Solomon Islands both this year and last. The teachers stayed with staff members of Trinity as well as with our Marist Brother community in Lismore. The students and teachers visited classes during the day as well as exploring the Lismore region. On ANZAC Day our visitors marched with our students and staff in Lismore, a highlight for all involved. Following the march a welcome BBQ was held which was attended by billeting families, staff and students. Our relationship with St Joseph s Tenaru has been strengthened by this visit. We look forward to continuing our friendship with the community of Tenaru, Solomon Islands. My thanks to everyone who has contributed to making our guests feel welcome, particularly those who opened their homes to both the students and staff from the Solomon Islands. Mr Luke Miller Director of Mission 5

Amie Browning Ex-student News Upon graduating from Trinity she headed to Germany on a 12 month exchange program to learn more about the people because she felt there had to be more to a country than two world wars. Amie returned to her home town of Lismore in January in She called into Trinity to say hello to staff and students and landed a job working in SMS office. Amie loved this job as Trinity was always like a second home. By December of that year Amie left Trinity again to travel. She thought it wasn t a good look to have seen more of Europe than her own country so she bought a greyhound bus pass and backpacked around Australia. It was during this trip that Amie met several nurses who were traveling the world and decided that nursing was the career for her. She returned to Lismore enrolled in TAFE did an Assistant in Nursing course, got a job at Maranoa Nursing home where she worked while she studied for her Bachelor of Nursing at Southern Cross University. Once Amie completed her studies she then moved to Maryborough QLD for her grad year and worked at the local hospital. It was in 2000 that Amie again moved overseas, this time basing herself in London, where she worked and travelled for 2 years. On her return to Australia she married and had 3 children, her family moved back to the North Coast in During 2014 Amie and her husband took their 3 boys out of school for a term and travelled around Australia with a camper trailer. She now works at Lismore Base Hospital and is planning her next trip to New Zealand with her family. Brainstorm Productions presented The Hurting Game to an appreciative Yr 7 audience. Ex-Trinity student & actor Tom Hughes is pictured with fellow Brainstorm actor after the show. Tom Hughes Tom Hughes, graduated in 2009 and completed a Bachelor of Dance at WAPPA. Since then he has been working as an actor for the past two years with Theatre in Education Touring Company, Brainstorm Productions. Tom has been back twice to perform at Trinity and has played to over a thousand students during his time with Brainstorm. Four Generations of History Education This photo represents four generations of History teachers at Trinity. It all started with the dynamic and passionate Marguerite Fisher, who passed that appetite for all things historical on to Alissa O'Reilly. In turn Jesse Smith was taught by both Alissa and Marguerite and Jesse and Alissa both taught Olivia Lisetto who recently completed her practicum at the College. The future of history education is in very safe hands. 6 Trinity Times Semester 1, 2016

Ex-student News Trinity Race Day Nathan Parker Nathan Delivers a Powerful Message During Term 1 of this year Mrs Brown initiated contact with a Trinity ex-student Nathan Parker. This led to Nathan coming to the College to speak to some Year 10 and Year 8 groups of students. He also met with a small group of Year 9 boys and made a real impact on those boys. Nathan, whose story appeared in Lismore editions of the Echo and the Northern Star as well as Sydney papers, was severely injured in an ADFA bus crash late last year. This accident resulted in his life being threatened and eventually the amputation of one hand. Obviously these events threw his lifelong goal of being an Airforce pilot into question. Luckily with great medical support and the encouragement of the ADFA Nathan s goals are still in tact. Nathan s presentation about resilience, focused on his journey to recovery and it was simply inspirational. The students were intensely interested in this person, who only late last year, had been asked to pray for in Tutor groups following the accident. Such strength of character and determination is often hard to find in a young man of his age. Nathan gave some very simple recommendations on how to approach problems that seem too immense to even contemplate and his attitude is best summed up in the verse below that appears on his business card. We look forward to Nathan s return visit later in the year when he will update us on how his recovery journey is progressing. The simple fact is that some times in life just don t go to plan. I choose to face all my challenges daily and I m just getting started. Nathan Parker. Trinity Race Day caption Trinity Race Day Trinity Race Day Trinity Times Semester 1,

Sport Taquira McGrath Recent Sporting Achievements A number of the College s students have recently achieved some amazing representative honours in the sporting arena. A brief summary of just some of the honours include: Taquira McGrath has been selected in the NSW U/15 Girls Hockey Team Nella Bradford has been selected in the NSW U/13 Girls Hockey Team Keharnu Conte has been selected in the NSW U/13 Boys Hockey Team Keea Parrish is travelling to China as a member of the Australian Futsal Team Nick Somerville is travelling to Brazil as a member of the Australian Futsal Team Jamilla Rankin competed for Northern NSW in the U/14 National Football Championships Courtney Jameson officiated at the National Football Championships Jakirra Graham recently won two National All Styles Martial Arts Australian titles and qualified for the Australian Martial Arts squad to travel to Japan to compete. Jakirra then placed first in an Open Women s Competition in Japan. Nicholas McLaren came 3rd at the National All Styles Martial Arts Australian titles. Former student Georgia Keen is heading to England in the coming months to trial for Crystal Palace and Millwall FC. Georgia represented the Australian School Girls Football twice whilst a student at Trinity. As we have such a large student population, it is often difficult to follow every students achievement outside of the school pathway. If your son or daughter is achieving in the sporting arena, I would love to hear about it. I can be contacted on mbarlow@trinitylismore.nsw.edu.au Keharnu Conte Attention Ex-Students, Staff and Associates of Marist Brothers' High School, St Mary's College or Trinity. I would love to hear from you! The College is always keen to find out what you have been doing since leaving school. If you are happy to be included in future publications please phone Jenny Dwyer on or jdwyer@trinitylismore.nsw.edu.au Indigenous Women s Cricket Year 11 student Carly Fuller recently toured India as part of the inaugural Australian National Indigenous Women s Cricket Team. This is an amazing achievement for a 16 year old schoolgirl from regional NSW, considering the calibre of players in the squad, the majority with Women s Big Bash League experience. Carly had an amazing cultural experience whilst travelling with the team and was able to shine on the field as well. She top scored in a match against Delhi, producing a fine knock of 46 at the top of the order to steer the Aussie s to a three wicket win. The tour to India was the first of its kind, with selection for the team based on performances at February s National Indigenous Championships (Imparja Cup) and at a club level. The squad of 14, were also able to visit the Taj Mahal and Australian High Commission in Delhi, as well as working with the Magic Bus organisation that supports disadvantaged children through sport. We hope to see Carly continue on her representative cricket career and wish her all the best in the future. Trinity to host Marist Cricket Carnival After successfully hosting the 2012 Marist Cricket Carnival and the 2015 Marist Netball Carnival, Trinity is hosting the 2016 Marist Cricket Carnival in December this year. The carnival is the highlight of the cricketing calendar each year and sees seven schools from all over the country and beyond converge on Lismore for a week of fun. This year s carnival will be very strong, with Marist schools from Beenleigh, Traralgon, Hunters Hill (Sydney), Ashgrove (Brisbane), Canberra, Kilmore and Auckland competing. The carnival will commence on Tuesday 6 December with the Commencement Mass and conclude on Monday 12 December with the final matches and Presentation Dinner. Over 120 students, coaches and managers will converge on Lismore with many more parents, grandparents and siblings making it a great event for not only the College but also the town. Matches will be played Wednesday to Friday, with a rest day scheduled for Saturday before the playoffs get under way on Sunday and Monday. If you are interested in billeting, sponsorship or assisting with the carnival, please contact the College s Manager of Sport, Mr Matthew Barlow on mbarlow@trinitylismore. nsw.edu.au Mrs Jenny Dwyer Editor Trinity Times Trinity Catholic College, 1 Dawson St, Lismore Jedd or 6627 Cox Trinity Times Semester 1, 2016
