It offers young women and men the environment and opportunities to achieve personal excellence in all areas of school life and beyond. Our approach to education is embodied in the College motto Agnoscere Et Diligere which means To Know and Love. The College was established in 1953 founded on the rich traditions of service of Saint Marcellin Champagnat and is part of the global network of Marist schools. The College s ethos reflects many of the personal qualities of Marcellin himself; a place where family spirit is strong, love of work and excellent achievement are highly valued, a place characterised by a lack of pretence but, rather, by simplicity and calm determination. A place where we consciously bring a Marian dimension to our teaching by prayer, imitating Mary s tenderness, strength and constancy of faith. Marist Penshurst is first and foremost a Catholic school that has the Gospel at its heart, encouraging students to respond to it with the same faith and generosity expounded by Mary. We practice our faith and strive to live it out daily in the way we treat each other, the way we learn and through our social justice programs and outreach service to the community. The four-stage building project which commenced in 014 provides the College with the latest and best in learning spaces. A number of students also complete studies at TAFE, the Saturday School of Community Languages, NSW School of Languages and Sydney Distance Education High School. 3

4 CURRICULUM INFORMATION Continued Particular features of the school s curriculum include: A Vision for Learning that fosters deep learning and the opportunity to engage in critical and creative thinking. Target setting where students, in collaboration with their parents/guardians and the Pastoral Care class teacher, set targets for improvement by identifying goals and strategies in the areas of ministry, wellbeing and academic life. An Accelerated Mathematics class in Year 11 to complete the Higher School Certificate Mathematics Unit course during the Preliminary Course year. Ability grouping of students in core subjects in Years A focus on individual students aptitude and ability in Stages 5 and 6 to ensure a successful transition after school to further education and training. Placing significant emphasis on strengthening students literacy and numeracy skills. Music program including College band, choir and individual tuition. Comprehensive Gifted and Talented and Learning Support Programs. A volunteer homework club. INFORMATION PROCESSING TECHNOLOGY (IPT) The Year 11 Information Processes and Technology class has been engaged to develop promotional videos for each of the Key Learning Areas (KLAs) at Marist Catholic College Penshurst. In line with the Sydney Catholic Schools Authentic Assessment statement, the students have developed products that are for a relevant, engaging and for a real-world purpose. The videos will be available for viewing on or after Open Day via your personal mobile device and an application called a QR Scanner. Please take the time to watch the work of our students as they proudly showcase our College. 5 BYOD INFORMATION What is BYOD? BYOD = Bring Your Own Device This learning model means that each student will bring to school a personally owned or family owned device for the purpose of learning. How does BYOD impact learning at the College? The BYOD program allows the provision of a 1:1 computer program to continue at the College, with the student and parent assuming responsibility for the device that is used. All students enrolling into the College will participate in the College BYOD program. The BYOD program provides greater scope for student autonomy in, and responsibility for, their own learning. It also provides first-hand experience of the use of various technologies within the school promoting digital citizenship beyond the classroom. The College teaching staff currently use and are familiar with Hewlett Packard (HP) laptops and effectively use this device in their teaching and learning experiences. What devices can a student bring to the College? Although there is a range of devices available Marist Catholic College Penshurst strongly recommends that the BYOD be a HP ProBook 430 G4. Secondary devices such as tablets and Ipads are not compatible with the learning provided by Marist Catholic College Penshurst and parents are requested not to purchase these devices for their child s BYOD. COLLEGE WEBSITE - Our website has been created with a responsive design to accommodate the various mobile devices that will access the site. The website streamlines and enhances the communication between the College and parents. Some important features to highlight include: KEY DATES: The Key Dates red flag appears on every page of the website. This feature links to a calendar of College events that allows you to display a week, month or agenda view. As this is a Google calendar you are able to add this to your calendars if this is convenient for you. It also means that the calendar is live and up to date with what is happening at the College. MENU: To navigate the website access the menu symbol located in the top right of every page, The menu is your one stop place to view what s on the entire site. This menu function has been designed to eliminate any drop down or pull out lists and means you are only one click away from the relevant page you wish to visit. This means that when you are on a page on the site you can either use your back arrow to return to where you were, or simply click the menu symbol to view all pages at once. 5

6 COLLEGE SPORT INFORMATION Marist Catholic College Penshurst provides a variety of opportunities for our students to be involved in Sport. The College participates in two Representative Sporting competitions, holds annual Swimming and Athletics Carnivals, and internal sport is held weekly on a Thursday afternoon where students have the choice of a number of activities such as Gym, Soccer, Oztag, Dance, Ten Pin Bowling, Tennis and many others. BOYS REPRESENTATIVE SPORT Marist Catholic College Penshurst has been a member of the Christian Brothers Sporting Association (CBSA) since 1986 and fields representative teams in single term competitions in AFL, Basketball, Cricket, Rugby League, Football, Futsal, Touch Football and Volleyball. There are three Divisions: Junior (Yrs 7-8); Intermediate (Yrs 9-10); Senior (Yrs 11-1). We also field teams in One Day Gala competitions in Baseball, Chess, Golf, Table Tennis and Tennis. Pathways to further representative honours are available through the CBSA to the CCC and State Level. GIRLS REPRESENTATIVE SPORT Our College has been a member of the Sydney Catholic Colleges Sports Association (SCC) since 015 when the school became co-educational and fields representative teams in single term competitions in Volleyball, Netball, Basketball, Football, Touch Football and Softball. There are three Divisions: Junior (Yr 7); Intermediate (Yrs 8-9); Senior (Yrs 10-1). We also field teams in One Day Gala competitions in Dance and Cricket. 7 CREATIVE ARTS - MUSIC, CHOIR, BAND, DRAMA, DANCE Music at Marist Catholic College Penshurst enables each student to find his or her musical talent and develop it fully through a wide range of genres and skill sets. INSIDE THE CLASSROOM All Music classes develop the student s skills in Performance, Composition and Listening and Analysing Music. All classes are differentiated to allow individual learning plans for each student. Technology is central in the Music classroom at MCCP. Students use the same software that professional Composers use to create their own works. They are also given access to cloud based software that helps develop their Musical Literacy along with their listening skills. Year 7 Mandatory Instrumental Programme Every student in Year 7 learns to play their choice of instrument. They can choose from instruments such as piano, flute, clarinet, saxophone, trumpet, trombone, violin, viola, cello and percussion. Students attend their instrumental class once a week as part of their Mandatory Music lessons and are taught by specialist instrumental teachers. Elective Classroom Music Music is offered as an elective subject from Year 9 through to HSC. All levels of music are offered including Music 1, Music and Music extenstion. EXTRA-CURRICULAR MUSIC The following extra curricular music ensembles are offered. All rehearsals take place before school and are scheduled once a week. All Ensembles have an opportunity to perform throughout the school year both inside and outside of the College. College Concert Band - Open to all students who currently play a Concert Band instrument. Directed by Mr Peter Blythe, students can perform at various functions throughout the year. Training Band - Open to students who are new to a Concert Band instrument and wish to train to the Concert Band standard. Rock Band - Entry by audition, students who are interested in Rock instrumental and performance techniques. Guitar Ensemble - Open to all students who show proficiency on the guitar. A range of styles from Spanish classical to modern rock guitar are performed in this ensemble. String Ensemble - Open to students who have shown proficiency on an orchestral string instrument. Choir - Open to all students who enjoy singing. Music performed ranges from traditional spiritual songs to modern day popular music. All students are welcome. PRIVATE MUSIC TUITION Private Music Tuition is available for a fee to any student who is interested. Lessons take place during the school day and are given once a week for a half hour duration. Students can choose to receive Private Music Tuition on any of the following: Guitar, Drums, Violin, Viola, Cello, Trumpet, Trombone, Flute, Saxophone, Clarinet, Vocals, Piano. DRAMA Drama is offered as an elective subject from Year 9 through to HSC. Students have the opportunity to study various forms of Dramatic art including performing, set design, costume design, script writing and more. The Drama Club is an extra-curricular group that develops the performance skills of students from Year 7-1. It is open to all students who would like to participate. DANCE Dance is offered as an elective subject from Year 9 through to HSC. Students develop their awareness of dance techniques, safe dance practice and will perform, and choreograph their own works. Various Extra- Curricular Dance ensembles are offered for the different levels and styles of student interest. They are open to all students from Year 7-1 and include the Jazz Dance group, the hip-hop group and contemporary Dance ensemble. Students enter into competitions and eisteddfods on a regular basis. 7

8 EXTRA CURRICULAR - DEBATING, PUBLIC SPEAKING DEBATING Debating has been a popular extracurricular activity at Marist Catholic College Penshurst for many years. The College competes in the Regional Catholic Schools Debating Competition, which is comprised of Catholic schools from within our local area. The Debating season commences in Term and the debates are held every Wednesday afternoon at the College and other schools in the local area. Parents and friends are always more than welcome to attend as audience members. Each year students enthusiastically participate in this challenging and rewarding discipline. 016 Year 10 Debating Competition Winners PUBLIC SPEAKING During Term 1 students from Marist Catholic College Penshurst compete in the Catholic Schools Debating Asociation (CSDA) Public Speaking Competition. The vast majority of Catholic schools in Sydney participate in this competition. Each year the students from Marist Catholic College perform extremely well with a number of students scoring a place each year. As well as opportunities to represent the College, one of the requirements of the English curriculum is that each year group has a speaking component as part of their assessment in English. MARIST ORATORY In Term 3 the College participates in the Marist Oratory compeition. This annual event sees Marist Schools from all over the nation come together for one evening to showcase their finest orators. In 015 Marist Catholic College Penshurst was placed first in this competition, a first for Penshurst. BUILDING TIMELINE Stage 1A The La Valla Learning and Ministry Centre completed 015.
