We have had a great start to 208 and have welcomed 63 new Reception students and 9 new students spread across other year levels. Our old Hillcresters have made sure the new children feel included and have offered their friendship and help to make the transition to a new school far less daunting, so a big thank you from me and your teachers! We welcome one new (but familiar) teacher to our school this year Tania Weigl in Room 0 with our Year 4/5 students. We also have a new Aboriginal Community Education Officer, Chenelle Benbolt-Agius who has taken Tammy Karpany s place. Tammy increased her hours at her other site and we wish her all the best and welcome Chenelle to our school. As you are aware, Simon Watts is back on board as STEM Coordinator after winning the position last year and we are also pleased to announce that Lauren Campbell has won another term as Coordinator-Intervention so things are humming along nicely. We understand that it is important to communicate events to families early so please find enclosed a calendar with the term s events (so far) listed for your information. Pupil Free Days have been determined early with better communication in mind and these will be: Term: Week 7, Tuesday3th March (following Adelaide Cup Day), Term 2: Week 7 Tuesday 2th June (following Queen s Birthday Holiday) Term 3: Week 3 Wednesday 8th August (Pupil Free Day) 3rd September (Show Day school closed) Term 4: Week 6 Monday 9th November We have a very busy term ahead with a Twilight Sports Day, Acquaintance Night & AGM, Swimming (Years 3-5) and Aquatics for the Year 6/7s. In Term 2, the Reception to Year 2s will be going swimming so keep your eye out for more information relating to these events or feel free to contact the school if you have any questions. 3 SUBWAY LUNCH ORDERS From Friday 6th of February we will be offering Subway lunches for all our students. Families will be able to order a subway lunch for their children every Friday, using the Qkr! app. Instructions on downloading and using the Qkr! app are included in this newsletter. Please note that orders need to be submitted by 6pm on Thursday. More information is available from the Front Office. Coles Sports for Schools From 7th February Coles are starting their Sports for Schools fundraising program. During the Sports For Schools program, families will be able to collect Coles Sports for Schools vouchers from Coles stores across Australia. When the program ends, schools can exchange those vouchers towards sporting equipment to encourage all kids to get healthy and active at school. For every $0 spent at Coles you will receive a voucher. These vouchers can then be dropped into the Sports for Schools box in the Front Office. Thank you to all our families for your continuing support of our school. Once again this term, we will be acknowledging Sweetheart Day hosted by the Heartkids Foundation on Valentine s Day (Wednesday, 4th February). This is a cause very close to our hearts as it has affected families within our school community so wear something RED and bring along a gold coin donation to support this very worthy foundation! 4 Our School Garden in 208 Wednesday sessions We have commenced our school garden program for this year and there already has been keen interest from staff and students who have indicated that they would like to be part of it. The sessions will again be held on Wednesdays and classes will come out for 4 or 5 week blocks. This ensures continuity with the particular theme or focus we are working on. Last year all classes participated and because of the numbers, some classes will first come out to the garden in the second term. If it is a hot or wet day we hold the sessions inside but still with a nature theme. What happens in a garden session? Similar to other years the focus will be on acquiring the skills and techniques for growing plants, especially food ones. This includes planting, propagating, keeping them alive, site maintenance tasks, tool safety and use, improving the soil, composting and many other hands on activities. We also study and observe the critters and insects that inhabit the garden, their vital role in the environment and their inter relationship with other creatures and plants i.e. their biodiversity value. We encourage problem solving by the students and some of the projects we work on are a fantastic way of challenging thinking and coming up with creative solutions. Some lessons link in with curriculum topics such as environmental sustainability. Year 7 students Year 7 students get to paint colourful designs and write their names on timber poles which are installed near the northern entrance in Term 4. We could use any surplus old shirts for painting and rags. A dry garden! Keeping gardens alive during Adelaide summers is a real challenge for any home gardener and we returned to find many of the veggies had not survived and the trees were struggling. This was because of the hot January and an irrigation problem over the holidays but when the milder weather comes in Autumn we will be able to plant seedlings again. Volunteers If you have some spare time your help would be appreciated, especially for Wednesday afternoon garden classes. No gardening knowledge or skills needed, you just have to have the mandatory requirements which Callum or the person at the front desk can inform you about. The first catalogue for this year has gone home with students today and is due back on the 5 th of February - Thursday, Week 3. Posters with the due date will also be in the library and the office. If you haven t used the Scholastic Book Club before, it is very easy to register, go to and follow the prompts. The online ordering is easy and you can earn free bonus books. For those of you who are already registered, you will be prompted to update the class details of your child(ren) when you log in for the first time this year.
