Please ensure your child is in school each day so they benefit from the full three-day experience. The Science Fair will take place on 21 February, and this will be incorporated into their Exit Point projects. All parents are welcome to attend the Science Fair which will take place in the Main Corridor from 1.00pm onwards. We request that you allow your child to bring their computer/tablet/device to school throughout the Exit Point days. As a school, we have a number of laptops, however not enough for all the middle school. These laptops are also limited as they may not have the software your child wishes to use. The devices will be locked in classrooms during breaks or they should put them in their lockers! Quiz Night To raise funds for the Grade 11 Geneva trip, the Physics and Chemistry classes are arranging a Quiz Night. On Friday, 23 February, the doors will open at 6.00pm and the quiz will begin at 7.00pm. With a multitude of prizes on offer and a chance to show off your knowledge, it is a night you surely do not want to miss! The quiz is open to all members of the ISB Community of 16 years and over. Entrance is free, donations appreciated. Arrange your teams of 5 here: We look forward to seeing you there! 9 February 2018
Chinese New Year Do remember that ISB Early Learning and Elementary will be celebrating Chinese New Year on Wednesday, 21 February. We would encourage them all to wear red on that day! Soccer Club There are some spaces available in the Grade 3-5 Soccer Club on a Tuesday afternoon from pm in the Main Gym. External soccer trainer Niklas Sudmann is looking forward to lots of new budding players! If your son or daughter is interested in joining, please tell them to go directly to the Main Gym after school. The next session will be on Tuesday, 20 February. Training is free of charge. Science Newsletter The ISB Science Department has been very busy putting together their February Science Newsletter which is being sent to you as a supplement together with this Parent Bulletin. Think Social Competition Grade 11 student Nour Hoban is taking part in this competition run by the Sparkasse Bremen. Her video entry shows her teaching female refugees to ride a bicycle. The winning entry is chosen through public vote. Please support her by voting for her project on between 12 and 23 February 2018.! Hip Hop Classes Grade 11 student, Stefan, is offering Hip Hop dance classes as part of his IB CAS. The lessons take place each Thursday from pm in the Small Gym (first floor) There are still some spaces available for Secondary students. If interested, please go along to the Small Gym and join in the fun! Students should wear comfortable clothes and clean gym shoes. See also the advert being sent as an attachment to this Bulletin. Meet Our CAS Students... Dominic, Grade 11 For one of my CAS projects, I play golf and I write an entry each week on my personal thoughts and experiences. I have to reflect a lot on what went well and what didn t go well. I ve been playing golf for 5 years and there are a lot of areas I need to improve on, e.g. mentality, practice routines, swing correction methods etc. I ve played in the German Teams Championship once and was a member of the Achim Golfclub youth team. Now I practise independently outside of the team under the supervision of my trainer Boris Bollmann. 2 Parent Bulletin 9 February 2018
Jugend Forscht - ISB Students Win! As you will read in the Science Newsletter (see attachment), several ISB students took part in this year s regional (Bremen-Mitte) competition Jugend Forscht! and for the younger age group Schüler Experimentieren. Yesterday, the winners were presented with their certificates. We are proud to announce that two ISB students, Jonas (who graduated from ISB last year - his entry was actually work that he had done in Biology while at ISB) and Arnaud (Grade 12), came first in their respective subjects Biology and Physics, and will go on to the next round of the competition on 8 and 9 March at Bremen Airport. The ISB Drop Tower team (Tim, Arnaud and Mark - all Grade 12) were third in the Physics category, while Mark also came third in the category Mathematics. In the Schüler Experimentieren, our younger students Vishal and Luis/Hugues (assisted by classmate Tom) received special prizes for their projects while Camille took fourth place with his experiment. Lucie and Pola of Grade 8 received certificates of participation. We congratulate all students that took part in the competition - we are immensely proud of you! Our thanks go to those parents and staff members who assisted in translating the students papers into German and who supported the students in many other ways. 9 February 2018 Parent Bulletin 3
University and Career Guidance Counselling (Grades 9-12) University College Groningen Thank you to all who attended the presentation on 29 January 2018 on learning linked with emotions by Dr Andringa from the University College Groningen. Hopefully, in the future, we will have more talks from a range of universities from across the world. Step One Interviews Letters will soon be given to Grade 10 students inviting parents to attend the Step One individual interviews which take place between 19 and 21 February. The times stipulated on the letters are fixed and cannot be altered, in part due to the Art examinations. Please come to Room 144a for your allotted meeting. If you miss your slot, there is no flexibility with the outside agency to make another appointment, however you will receive the results. Grade 12 Applications Those who have applied to UK institutions will hear back before March and will have to accept after the IB results are out. Please check the conditional offers for information that the universities request in addition to what you have already provided. The deadlines for some US colleges are rolling, meaning that applications to these institutions can still be made. See Mrs Evans for more information. All Other Universities Teachers will not give you a letter of recommendation directly. You will have to see Mrs Evans to request one or, if you have requested it directly from a teacher, you will have to ask Mrs Evans to send it to the university that requests it. A recommendation from a teacher is a professional reference and, as such, you will not get to see it. All other applications should be nearly complete by now so, if you require additional documents (this will be stipulated during the specific application procedure), see Mrs Evans at least 2 weeks before it is required by the institution. February April May + June June July 5 DEADLINES, FAIRS + TESTS Grade 10 individual Step One interviews Grade 12 receives offers and replies from universities IB results published If you have questions on any of the above, please contact Mrs Evans on: cevans@isbremen.de 4 Parent Bulletin 9 February 2018
House News House Points Here are this week s results as per the end of Thursday, 8 February The Results of This Week There's been a huge influx of points this week, through individual efforts and through the Elementary Connect 5 Tournament and the Elementary Kickball Tournament. All of the participants competed extremely well, bringing all four Houses even closer together. It really is going to come down to the wire this year, with every single point making a huge difference! Both tournaments finished: Elementary Connect 5: 1. Roland 15 points 2. Hanse 10 points 3. Lloyd 10 points 4. Schnoor 10 points Elementary Kickball: 1. Roland 100 points 2. Hanse 75 points 3. Lloyd 50 points Threeway tie for second place! House Clothes House t-shirts (and other good quality house clothing items) can be ordered from the company Meinecke Promotion, situated just north of Bremen. Please go to their website to place your order. Once you have placed the t-shirt in the basket online, please be aware that you need to go back out of the basket to the article you require on the main homepage and click on the button Add Your House Print otherwise your t-shirt will only have the school logo on the front, but no house logo on the back! 9 February 2018 Parent Bulletin 5
