Mr. Joseph Atichi Munala, Chief Administrative Officer, National Environmental Management Authority, PO Box , NAIROBI. BRIEF OVERVIEW OF THE FACULTY: Historical background of FESS Faculty of Education and Social Sciences (FESS) and Faculty of Science and Engineering (FSE) were established through approval of the Moi University (MU) senate in (FSE) as the only two faculties then. The faculty was established in line with the principle of interdisciplinarity. The Faculty is located at the main campus of MMUST along the Kakamega Webuye road, one kilometer from the central business district (CBD) of Kakamega town within the main campus which stands on over 150 acre plot with an annex, Campuses and Centers situated in the various places in the country. Through the years, the number of students in FESS has grown from a small number of about 80 in 2002 to over 5,000 in This rapid growth has been possible because of the continuous review and development of new programmes, courses and creation of new departments. The large number of programmes and students to date demands the review of the structural organizational and management logistics in order for the faculty to achieve her vision and mandate in enhancement of knowledge and stimulate the intellectual life in economic, social, cultural,
15 scientific and technological development of Kenya in accordance with the legal notice that established the University. The idea of this structural adjustment and the need to be relevant and appropriate to the current academic needs has given rise to the necessity of several strategic objectives as contained in this plan. One such strategic objective which is crucial towards the growth of the Faculty is the transformation of FESS into a College of Education and Social Sciences (CESS). FACULTY VISION To be a centre of excellence in Education and Social Sciences responsive to development needs of society through engagement in dynamic knowledge creation and application. FACULTY MISSION To generate, preserve and disseminate knowledge, skills and attitudes by integrating education and social sciences into quality programmes covering a wide variety of disciplines while engaging in innovative research, training, teaching and community service. FACULTY QUALITY OBJECTIVES 1. Deliver a diversity of education and social science training programmes through quality teaching that is responsive to societal needs. 2. Contribute to the development of professional education and social sciences through basic and applied research. 3. Provide leadership, consultancy and other support services for quality improvement in education and the social sciences. 4. To promote innovative educational and social science processes in order to improve productivity and development of society. 5. To produce graduates who are equipped with knowledge, skills and attitudes necessary for sustainable quality education and social sciences.
