1 The Globe Newsletter of Gleeson College Issue 14 > Friday 2 June 2017 GLEESON S BIGGEST CUP OF TEA & WORLD S GREATEST HAIRSPRAY! McDonald House hosted Gleeson s Biggest Cup of Tea & World s Greatest Hairspray to help raise vital funds for cancer research and support services last Wednesday 26 May. Our aim, to put the McDonald Motto into action Truth, Courage & Unity, and raise $2000 to support the Cancer Council and Leukaemia Foundation. As a College community, we were able to raise an overwhelming $ as more than 120 staff and students attended the event. Countless brave members of the Gleeson community also participated by getting their hair spray coloured - a new addition to our House event and led by Year 12 student Tayla Slack. The event was a great success thanks to the many wonderful student and staff helpers. The participation and excitement our students brought with them set the tone as we all enjoyed a hot drink, some delicious food and each other s company. Many thanks must be given to the McDonald Care Group Teachers, and a special thanks to Mrs McLoughlin and Miss Feleppa for their support and organisation, and especially for the catering provided by their talented Food & Hospitality Classes. Thanks to all students, staff and families who supported the occasion, we hope next year to grow the event and raise ven more muchly-needed funds. As a faith filled community we will keep those that have lost the fight, won the fight and are still fighting Cancer in our thoughts and prayers. 2 YEAR 8 STUDENTS ENHANCE LEARNING IN STEM As we fast approach the halfway point of this term (and the year!) it seems timely to remind students, particularly our Senior students, of the importance of adhering to due dates and managing time. We are very fortunate at Gleeson to have several support systems in place to encourage students to access staff help and utilise time. I strongly encourage our students to take responsibility for their learning and take advantage of the great support available to them. Employers are increasingly looking for applicants with interpersonal/communication skills, independent learning skills, resilience, and problem-solving skills. Students have many opportunities to develop these skills at Gleeson. As a staff we are working on a number of initiatives to enhance student learning and opportunity. STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) is increasingly adopted as a way to not only develop skills in these disciplines, but also to enable cross-curricular study. One example this week was led by Ms Evodia Groza, a pre-service Teacher on her final placement at Gleeson College. During this program, students designed their own drone boats and used them in a mock disaster scenario called Hero s Challenge. Their challenge was to look at the design of a boat and work out the optimal weight the drone boats were able to carry civilians back to safety. The boats had magnets attached to them, as well as rubber ducks, in a pool of water (see photos). Many of the students were able to understand the human applications of drone boats and other technological aspects of production including design, buoyancy and durability. The Year 8s involved were clearly engaged and accessed a variety of skills to solve the problem, such as teamwork, engagement and creative and critical thinking. We sincerely thank our four pre-service teachers who complete their placements this week: Ms Evodia Groza, Mr Nadeem Aftab, Ms Sophia Mazzaferro, and Mr Daniel Elvin. We wish them every success in this wonderful profession of Teaching. Overarching such initiatives (whether they be curricular or wellbeing or staff professional learning), is our School Wide pedagogy (SWP) which we are currently refining, and through which we will be better able to articulate why and how we do what we do here at Gleeson College. Essentially the SWP is a comprehensive document which reflects and informs our everyday practice. This work is being carried out in conjunction with Associate Professor Dorothy Andrews and Dr Joan Conway, both from the University of Southern Queensland, and CESA. We thank Mrs Susan Smith for her leadership here and look forward to sharing our work with the wider community in due course. It has already highlighted our College s strong sense of Catholic identity, and our commitment to excellence for each individual student. This evening we celebrate the Year 12 Formal with our students. We share with them the joy of simply being together, reenergizing for the journey ahead. Onward as ever! Finally, we offer our congratulations to Dr Neil McGoran, who has been announced as the new Director of Catholic Education, South Australia. We wish Dr McGoran well in this very important role. Wishing you and your families God s blessings for the week ahead. Dr Sue Knight, Acting Deputy Principal

3 GLEESON WINS TEA TREE GULLY COUNCIL COMMUNITY GRANT! An initiative of the 2017 Student Leadership Team was to see the construction and implementation of a community garden at Gleeson College. The concept of this garden was to provide curriculum links to ecology, Food and Hospitality, our Doorways to Construction Class and a platform for Community Service. To support this initiative, students, with assistance from Mrs Joanna Bennett, applied for a Tea Tree Gully Council Community Grant, and worked together to plan for, write and submit the grant. Earlier this term we received notification our application was successful and last Wednesday I, accompanied by College Vice President Georgia Craggs (12 DSHUT) and Fyfe Senior Vice House Captain Maybelline San Juan, attended a Council ceremony to receive the grant. Securing this grant means we can move forward with further planning for this project, and more students will now have the opportunity to become involved. A garden of this type will not only benefit the students and staff of Gleeson College, but reach into our wider community. Thank you to the support provided by Tea Tree Gully Council, and we will share the progress of this initiative in future issues of The Globe. Mr Shannon Bertram, Assistant Principal - Student Development

6 NETBALL SA SPECIALIST SCHOOLS PLAYOFFS > Priceline Stadium Our Specialist Netball Program students competed at the annual Netball SA Specialist Schools Playoffs held at Priceline Stadium on Monday. This event provides students the opportunity to showcase their netball skills against other Netball SA Specialist Schools in a full day tournament. This year we weren't so lucky with the weather and many of our games were played outdoors in the wet, making it difficult to get a hold of the ball and be confident with footwork. Despite the challenging conditions our players persisted, and when we did get an opportunity to play indoors, they were able to better demonstrate the skills and concepts they have been learning throughout this semester. A big thank you to all our students who took part in the day and also to our GC Coaches Darren Saul, Taylor Krawczyk and Amy Uglesic for lending their expertise. A final thank you to Eva Thompson (12 DSAKN) who offered to umpire for the day! 2017 Final Results: Year 8 (Maroon) Year 8 (White) Year 9 Year 10 4th 5th 2nd 3rd Ms Candice Mitchell, Specialist Netball Program Coordinator

7 SATURDAY MORNING WINTER SPORT > Saturday 27 May Wrap Up Saturday Morning Winter Sport has seen a great start to the season, with Gleeson fielding three Middle Boy Soccer Teams, an Open Girls Soccer Team, four Netball Teams (Year 10, Year 9, Mixed Year 8/9 and Year 8), a Girls Badminton Team and four Middle and Open Boys Basketball Teams! With some very competitive sides, Gleeson has started strong with some very convincing wins, which may call for some teams to be re-graded into more difficult competitions within the next couple of weeks. This Season Saturday Morning Sport is lucky enough to have some dedicated Year 11 students who will be reporting on the games weekly, and taking some videos and photographs of all our Winter teams! We look forward to the making of what should be some very clever Video Diaries. Saturday Morning 27 May provided perfect conditions for Gleeson s sporting teams, The Morning started out cold and wet, but as the teams turned out so did the sun with a temperature of 19 degrees we couldn t have asked for anything better. This week we set ourselves up at St Ignatius College to watch three of our Netball Teams and the Open Girls Soccer Team, which is made up of female students from Year 8 through to Year 12. The Girls Soccer kicked off first at 8.10am, with Gleeson versing the host school St Ignatius. Gleeson were moving the ball around quickly and precisely, and there was a lot of competitiveness coming from both teams on the field, as we expect in A Grade. St Ignatius turned up the intensity early but that wasn t enough as our girls worked hard to transition the ball, which allowed Mia Fitzharris to kick the first goal for Gleeson and get them on the scoreboard. The girls played a great game and ended up winning 2-1. Our three Middle School Netball Teams all had precise and sharp passes in their games. The Year 8 Team coached by Old Scholar Sarah Pope and current Year 11 student, Jessica Saul (11 HSUGL), had a tough game losing to Loreto. The Year 9 Team coached by Old Scholar Amy Uglesic also showed host school St Ignatius that we are a fighting team as they won The Year 8/9 Team played a consistent and determined game against St Dominic s and walked away with another win! All teams put out an outstanding effort and played well, and we now look forward to what the Gleeson Boys Basketball Teams have to offer up tomorrow (Saturday 3 June). 9 GC EDGE ST MICHAEL S 3-2 IN TWILIGHT THRILLER Gleeson took on St Michael s in Round 4 of the Twilight Soccer League on Wednesday and we were looking to reclaim top spot after having the bye in Round 3. This match also counted as our second match of the Open Boys Knockout Soccer Competition, so it was really important the boys take a positive result out of the game. The opening half was a tight and tense affair with both sides understandably keen to get the points, and sharing good spells of possession and creating opportunities. After 20 minutes we were able to open the scoring when Cooper Nunn (10 MSCOD) was able to get forward for a corner, and found himself in the right place at the right time to finish a loose ball in the box. St Michael s responded strongly, taking the game to us physically and were able to bounce back with two quick goals of their own to leave us 2-1 down just before half time. The boys managed to earn themselves a free kick in the dying minutes of the first half and it was Captain Johnny Librino (12 FSRUT) who stepped up to stroke the resulting free kick into the bottom right hand corner to make it 2-2 at the break. The second half again saw us in a tight tussle against a quality opponent with chances being created at either end. Young goalkeeper Riley Morish (9 DMCUR) was on top of his game, ensuring the game stayed level with some important saves. As the game wore on it opened up and we were beginning to gain the ascendency and control of the match. Several quality chances were being created but we Cooper Nunn Ryan Mayo were unable to finish the good work and it was looking like our efforts may be in vein. Fortunately, we were able to take our chance when Ryan Mayo (10 MSSEL) delivered a quality corner to the head of Nunn, who directed the header past the keeper to seal the three points for Gleeson with a 3-2 victory! The win capped off a perfect opening to the Twilight Soccer League, with the result seeing us retain top position on the ladder. Gleeson College will face Prince Alfred College in Round 5 in what will be a rematch of the 2016 Grand Final! Mr Clint Vause, First XI TSL Coach Johnny Librino CONGRATULATIONS TO OUR GC ATHLETES REPRESENTING!! Congratulations to Year 11 student Brianna Gibbs (11 HSUGL) on her selection in the Australian Junior Indoor Netball Touring Team set to contest the 2017 WINA Junior World Series in South Africa later this year. Brianna won selection in the 16 & Under Ladies Team after exceptional performances for South Australia at the National Junior Indoor Netball Championships held recently. Well done Brianna! Congratulations to Year 12 student Simon Wells (12 FSMIL) on recently being awarded a South Australian Sports Institute (SASI) full scholarship for the coming season. Simon was also recently named in the Hockey SA Hotshots Squad alongside his older brothers and GC Old Scholars Chris (Class of 2010) and Michael (Class of 2012)! He is also a current member of the Hockey SA Under 21 Team. Well done Simon! Barossa Half Marathon & Australian Schools Triathlon Fest > Congratulations Trent! Congratulations to Year 11 student Trent Wallace (11 MSSPI) who won 2nd Place in his age group in his first ever Half Marathon at the 2017 Jacob s Creek Barossa Marathon Festival last Sunday! Trent completed the 21.1km course in a time of 1 hour 29 minutes and 14 seconds, crossing the line second in the age group. Trent also represented South Australia and Gleeson College at the 2017 Australian Schools Triathlon Fest held in Penrith last school holidays. He raced admirably in the highly competitive Senior Male division placing 26th overall, despite a challenging transition, and was SA s best performer in the All Ages Championship Relay event. Well done Trent!
