1 The OCS lamp O Senior Section Newsletter To raise up effective leaders of godly character who will blend academic achievement and biblical truth to influence society for the glory of God. Term 1, Week 4, 21 February 2017 Swimming Carnival Once again it was a beautiful day for the OCS Swimming Carnival. Students dressed up in their house colours and showed their support throughout the day. Emily Nobbs diving in Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego were all well represented across the field of competitors. The winning house was Shadrach with 1129 points, followed by Meshach with 953 points and then Abednego with 948 points. These points will added to the 2017 progressive house scores. We are very grateful to all our parents and members of the OCS community who assisted in a wide range of areas. 26 students broke 44 records on the day. 4 VET Academic It has been an exciting week in some of our OCS households as the 2016 HSC VET students received their Certificate II documentation. Stage 6 Disability Provisions Mr Glen Gray, Jordan Berry, Emily Childs, Nicholas Dwyer, John Chapman-Mortimer, Shania Farnsworth, Mrs Sonya Wratten and Noah Daugherty Absent: Edward Johnson, Scott Wurzer, Dior Taylor and Ben Wratten This is our very first graduating HSC class from our Bembooka Construction and Hospitality VET classes and every student involved should be proud of what they have achieved. VET courses have two aspects the HSC, for which the students received results last December; and the trade Certificate II qualification, which was finalised at the end of 2016 and arrived in the mail this week. Now is the time to notify the school if your child needs added support for exams or assessment tasks due to a medical or learning disability. Stage 6 Disability Provisions may only be provided if NESA approves. All medical evidence must be no older than November There is a special NESA form Congratulations to the following students: Nick Dwyer, Edward Johnson, Scott Wurzer, Jordan Berry, John Chapman-Mortimer, Emily Childs, Noah Daugherty, Shania Farnsworth, Dior Taylor and Ben Wratten. 5 2017 ICAS International Competitions and Assessments for Schools ICAS is a highly regarded and internationally recognised assessment program for schools in Digital Technologies, English, Mathematics, Science, Spelling and Writing. It assists schools in identifying students levels of academic performance. Each student who participates in ICAS receives: An engaging and challenging full-colour assessment booklet An individual diagnostic report highlighting strengths and areas for development Online access to their own ICAS results, which can be viewed and downloaded A UNSW Global certificate recognising their achievement: Participation, Merit, Credit, Distinction and High Distinction We encourage everyone to take advantage of these assessments, as they provide an external standardised check on your child s progress. A note will come home with students this week. Please return the attached form to school by Friday, 17 March, with correct payment. Careers Chat Time Come along on Wednesdays, anytime during lunch (1:00pm 1:40pm) to chat with Mrs Berry about all things Careers. This could include: Questions about TAFE courses; Finding out about university courses; Advice on writing a résumé; Help in finding a work experience placement; Just a general catchup! Remember every Wednesday lunchtime in Mrs Berry s office (Bembooka building).

6 Bembooka News Welcome to 2017! Our Vocational Education and Training (VET) classes have been at work for three weeks now, and are progressing well in the development of new skills. Our VET subjects of Construction and Hospitality provide students in Years 9-12 with the opportunity to complete a 2-year dual purpose subject. Both are HSC subjects, which means they have an HSC exam at the end of the two years and can be counted towards an ATAR. Students also receive a TAFE Certificate II qualification, providing a head-start if they choose to continue in these areas after leaving school. We have students from Years 9-12 at OCS participating in our VET courses this year. They are experiencing the world of adult education in a non-traditional classroom, developing independent learning expertise and competencies in practical skills. For those in Stage 5 (Years 9-10), they will have a head-start in the rigours of HSC learning, preparing them for the Academics expectations of Years VET students complete practical work placement as part of their course. Whether it be time spent in a related workplace or completing their required hours by linking their skills to school-based activities, each student will have the opportunity to apply their learning to a reallife workplace scenario. This helps to consolidate learning and develop maturity. It will be an exciting year in Bembooka as we follow our VET students through their learning. Stay tuned for more updates! Mrs Kath Berry

8 Athletics Training runs on Wednesdays, 3:15pm 4:15pm at OCS With the diversity of the Athletics activities, each week there will be a couple of focus sports. Mr Cordery has developed a training plan and would love to talk with parents who have specialist skills in any of these sports.
