It was a fantastic night as we celebrated the completion of secondary schooling for our graduating class of It s an occasion our students, parents and staff look forward to as it is a chance for everyone to celebrate the past 6 years of hard work and dedication at Gladstone Park and the many achievements over those years. Our students looked so mature and sophisticated. Thanks to Ms Elana Ieremidis, Ms Michele Burns, Ms Brown, Mr Harrison, the Senior School team, the organising committee and the School Captains for their involvement in organising the event. The event was also a chance to farewell some leaving and retiring staff such as Mr Perich, Mr Jaques, Mr Tosi and Ms Munro and to thank them for their contributions to the whole school and their work with this year s year 12 students. We wish them every success for the future. Congratulations to all of our year 12 s for completing their VCAL and VCE and making it through the gruelling exam period in one piece. We were very proud of you all. I look forward to finding out the VCE results and your tertiary placements in the coming months. Enjoy a well -earned break School Captains After a very intensive selection process, the 2018 College Captains have been selected and presented to the student body at the recent year level assemblies. Let me introduce and congratulate our College Captains for 2018: Sports Captain Ben Imbesi Civics and Citizenship (SRC) Captain Amal Wehbe Arts Captain Sarah Moustafa Academic Captain Jarrad Rowe Year 9 Camp Recently a group of our year 9 students went to Anglesea for the annual surf camp. They were very fortunate in having a weather period that was perfect for surfing. Everyone had a fantastic time. Thank you to the teachers involved and to the student for their exemplary behaviour on the camp. There are pictures of the students having fun further on in this newsletter. Thanks to Mr Zanetidis, Mr Johnson, Ms Miles, Ms Jones, Ms McLennan and the students for attending and a huge thanks to Mr Johnson for organising the camp. Last Newsletter for the year As this is the last newsletter for the year, I wish everyone a safe and relaxing holiday break. Our year 12 results will be out next week and we will publish our high achievers on the notice board at the front of the school. Well done to everyone and thank you for your contribution 1 to our school community.

3 Year 8 Discover La Trobe Excursions All Year 8 students participated in a Discover LaTrobe excursion from Wednesday 22 November to Friday 24 November. The aim of the excursion was to: Introduce students to University Familiarise students with the University campus and it s people Build a sense of belonging and gain an understanding of the university community Students participated in the following activities: Uni Buddies La Trobe Student Facilitators presented what a typical day at uni is like for them. Each presenter had a slightly different day reflecting their course demands and year level of study. Race around La Trobe (RaLT) RaLT is an activity run on campus to aid students in building their familiarity with a university, what it does and what it has to offer them in the future. In addition students had the benefit of engaging with our La Trobe University Facilitators. Graduate Game Graduate Game introduced the concept of higher education to students in an innovative and interactive way, covering subjects from social life to finance. Students played the interactive game, answering questions that help them learn the language of university and understand what it is like to attend and study in higher education. Who goes to uni (careers and courses) This activity allowed students to understand that university is for everyone and to understand the different pathways taken by people through higher education to their career goals. They also learnt about different careers and which require university qualifications, Students had a fantastic time and thank you to all teachers who supervised. 4 Year 8 Discover La Trobe Excursions On November 22nd 4 year 8 classes wen to La Trobe University because Gladstone Park has a partnership with La Trobe we got to go see what a university is like. We had a lot of activities and we got to see what it s like from a university student s point of view. We got to see the amazing facilities including the lecture rooms, agora, food court and much more. We had 4 activities to do, we had to do a scavenger hunt around the campus, which showed us what the whole university looked like. We also played a game where you had to guess what job the person had by asking what it included, this showed us what things you have to know and do to have a certain profession. We then played a life-sized board game, this game showed us ways to save money at university, how much it costs to live in accommodation around university and much more. We also had a session in the lecture theatre where students told us about their experiences and how they got to university, whether it be straight from year 12 or if they had to take a different path to get there. They also told us about how the university works, what you have to do and more. In between activities we had lunch and we could go to the many food places in the agora, they had a wide range of food and stores which was very enjoyable for us to have a look around. Overall I think it was a great experience and definitely showed us a lot about what it s like to attend university. Natasha 8D 4

5 Year 9 Surf Camp Going on the camp was one of the best experiences of my life. I got to know people I had never spoken to before here at Gladstone Park as well as some teachers I became friends with. One of the best times being on the surf camp was the surfing and the kayaking because I got to learn how to properly catch waves and how to get up on the board and learned how to kayak because I have never done it before. The first day was the best, as it was the very first time I got to learn how to surf, it was also the best day because I realised that it was the perfect opportunity to get together with my family and surf together at the beach. The last two days were also great because of going to the waterfalls and watching movies with the rest of the campers. On the last day of the camp, besides getting up at 6:30 in the morning was probably one of the busiest days I ve ever had in my life due to going down to the falls and walking back up the steep steps and then surfing with the whole group then going home and going out with my mother. I recommend this camp to the next year s Year 9 s because it could be the best three days of your life, especially if you ve never been on one. (You never know you might meet a celebrity, that s what happened to me.) Again I m so glad I went on this camp and I would gladly do it again. By Sharni Wilson Martin 5

9 Year 12 Graduation The 2017 Year 12 Graduation was held at Moonee Valley Racecourse on Monday 27 th November. The students all looked fabulous in their dresses and suits, and enjoyed a celebratory night of their wonderful schooling achievements. Parents/ guardians are responsible for paying the cost of medical treatment for injured students, including any transport costs. ATTENTION YEAR 11 & YEAR 12 PARENTS Parents are reminded that where a Year 11 or Year 12 student is absent from school due to a family holiday, this will be considered an unapproved absence. VCE and VCAL have attendance requirements which must be met in order for a student to pass. Reasonably low cost accident insurance policies are available from commercial insurers should you require one. 15
