5 FOREWORD We are very pleased to welcome you back for a new school year at Ashlawn. For some this will be their first year here and we hope that you will find all the staff and other students very supportive as you seek to find your way around. Over the course of this academic year you will have many opportunities both to learn and also to be involved in other areas of school life. We would encourage you to take full advantage of these, whether in the classroom or in the many extra-curricular activities on offer. We have high standards at Ashlawn and will expect you to work hard and to behave in a mature and sensible way. On our side we will ensure that you have the teaching, facilities and support to help you achieve your goals. The primary aim of this homework diary is to help you record details of homework, but it also includes pages that will help you to record important information that is relevant to you and check important dates or times. It is designed to help you manage your homework, which can consist of set tasks set by teachers, study or revision for exams, independent research, private reading and other activities that compliment or extend the curriculum for the student. Homework can be provided in a variety of forms, including: The formal written exercise The regular use (homework) textbooks/schemes Practising musical instruments, speaking (modern languages) Acquisition and revision of (key) vocabulary and technical terms Reading for information - books, newspapers, magazines, use of ICT Reading for pleasure - personal reading records, revision and redrafting Discussions with family/friends on various topics Research tasks investigations or projects Parents will be asked to check student planners regularly, to encourage full and regular completion of planners, to sign where appropriate, and to contact the appropriate member of the student support team where there is a concern. I wish you all the very best for a successful and happy year. Kind Regards Lois Reed Head Teacher 5

25 PUNCTUALITY & ATTENDANCE If you re not here, you can t learn Good attendance and punctuality are linked to proven exam success. Punctuality Punctuality is an important part of self-discipline and is essential to good time management and ultimately, arriving on time means you are ready to learn. 1. School begins at 8.50am and 2.25pm, and you should be at the right room at this time. 2. Be outside your form for 1.25am. If you arrive in school after 9.00am or 2.15pm then you must go straight to your lesson. If you arrive after 9.25am in the morning or 2.15pm in the afternoon you must provide an absence note. Attendance The proper place for you on a school day is at school. If you are not in school then you must have a justifiable reason and your parents should telephone the Attendance/ Student Services office on each day of absence; an absence note is then not required. Parents are requested not to arrange family holidays during term time. Attendance per half term Term Attendance % Registration / Term 1 Assembly October Half Term Term 1 Term 2 Christmas Break February Half Term Term 2 Term 3 Term 3 Easter Break May Half Term This timetable may be subject to change later in the year. 25

29 ASSESSMENT FOR LEARNING GO4SCHOOLS What is Go4schools? GO 4 Schools is a powerful, joined-up, easy-to-use, online system that allows students, parents and teachers to access the information they need 24/7 to work together to improve student outcomes. Powerful progress report functionality is built into GO 4 Schools to allow you to collect time-stamped snapshots of headline grades that can be supplemented with Attitude to Learning scores and attendance data. The Full progress reports module allows the supplementary information to include written comments, entered as free text and/or via comment banks. Because GO 4 Schools is online, you can access your reports from home in the evenings as well as at school. This data is LIVE and can change daily. How Do I Get Started? All students will be given a log in to access this information when they start Ashlawn School. If you have lost your log in then please see IT Services. 29
