THE JOHN LYON SCHOOL Parents are united in the view that the school does its utmost to develop every inch of potential The Good Schools Guide
John Lyon has a clear set of values that are vital to our community. These values shape who we are, what we do and how we do it. Each value is woven into School life and our admissions process. Our values are tangible and meaningful, they enable us to promote and teach a set of principles to our pupils that will help them develop as individuals to be the best that they can be. THE JOHN LYON SCHOOL VALUES ARE: Welcome to John Lyon School. As the Head of this successful school, I am delighted to introduce you to all that we have to offer. We have wonderful facilities, 25 acres of playing fields, a committed and enthusiastic teaching staff all combined with a genuine warmth unique to Middle Road, Harrow-on-the-Hill. Founded in 1876, we are proud of our heritage. Academic excellence is at the heart of the School and our results speak for themselves. John Lyon has a richly deserved reputation for providing an excellent all-round education that combines high academic standards with excellence in sports and the arts. John Lyon pupils achieve strong academic results and we are one of the top 20 boys independent schools in the country. We offer a unique education that embraces opportunity and excellence both inside and beyond the classroom. Sport, Music, Drama, Art, societies and community projects all thrive. Every pupil matters, enrichment opportunities abound. Quite simply, if your child becomes a John Lyon pupil he will become part of our Lyonian family and we will help him define and achieve his goals. Katherine Haynes Head The John Lyon School
ADMISSIONS John Lyon offers a broad education to boys who aspire to achieve excellence in all they do. As such, the admissions procedure is designed both to reveal applicants ability as well as to judge their potential. We look to offer places to able young men who have a great attitude to learning combined with a desire to be the best that they can be. 11+, 13+ AND 16+ ENTRY The closing date for applications at all three entry points to School is 31 st October in the year prior to entry. To register their son for entry, parents must complete a Registration Form and submit it to the Admissions Office, with the non-refundable registration fee of 100 and a copy of their son s passport or birth certificate. The admissions process tests applicants in English and Maths as one would expect, but also contains elements that we use to judge a pupil s teachability. We achieve the latter by interviewing all 11+ applicants, and aim to do this before we have test results so that judgement is made of the boy in the room, rather than solely of his test results. We also have a series of group activities on the day of entrance examinations, enabling us to see the boys working and thinking practically. Our tests do not contain trick questions, we aim to create a level playing field that allows future John Lyon pupils to shine. We do not weight results for summerborn applicants but we do take note of those pupils who are significantly younger than their peers within the application process and when making our offers. Offers are made based on a combination of the testing and the interviews, we also require a reference from the applicant s current school. We use the entrance tests to identify potential Academic Scholars. 11+ and 13+ entrance examinations take place, typically, during the second week of January each year. All 13+ candidates are interviewed by the Head prior to the examination. All 11+ candidates will be interviewed during the Autumn and Spring Terms. 11+ EXAMINATIONS English 1 hour Maths 1 hour Group Activity up to 1 hour 13+ EXAMINATIONS English 1½ hours Maths 1 hour French 45 minutes Science 45 minutes Sample Papers are available on our website. At 16+, entry is by entrance examination. An offer is conditional on entrance examination results and GCSE grades. In general, prospective Sixth Form entrants will be expected to achieve A grades, or better, in those GCSE subjects they intend to pursue at A-Level, plus passes in Mathematics and either English or English Literature. All candidates will meet the Head of Sixth Form. 2 The John Lyon School
SCHOLARSHIPS All boys who take the 11+ or 13+ examination in January will be considered for an Academic Scholarship: Their performance in the examination, their school reference and their interview will all be taken into consideration. Sixth Form Scholarships are awarded dependent on GCSE results. BURSARIES A small number of means tested bursaries of up to 100% of School Fees are available from John Lyon s Charity for boys living in specific boroughs. Separate applications need to be made for Art, Drama, Sport and Music Scholarships. Potential candidates will be called for special selection interviews and tests as appropriate. Scholarships normally provide for between 500 and 2000 of annual tuition fees. 4 The John Lyon School
THE CURRICULUM IN YEARS 7 & 8 Mathematics English ICT French Spanish Latin Biology Chemistry Physics Art Drama Music Geography History Religious Studies/ Philosophy PE Games Reading In Year 9, boys choose to take five subjects from the following list: Latin Spanish French Music Drama Art GCSE Core subjects: English Language (IGCSE) English Literature (IGCSE) Mathematics (IGCSE) In Year 10, pupils choose six optional subjects from: Art French Chemistry (IGCSE) Latin Music Physics (IGCSE) Drama Geography (IGCSE) Spanish History (IGCSE) Computer Science Ancient Greek Religious Studies/ Philosophy Biology (IGCSE) The majority of our students will in total study for nine IGCSE/GCSE subjects. Excellence: Able, Gifted and Talented provision John Lyon provides added opportunities for pupils who are gifted in some way. The Excellence team identify Able, Gifted and Talented boys who will benefit from extra-curricular activities to enrich and challenge them. This may involve trips to cultural events or mind-stimulating lectures as well as in-house workshops and discussion groups. The older Able, Gifted and Talented students are encouraged to run workshops for younger pupils and act as leaders on trips. 6 The John Lyon School
THE CO-CURRICULAR PROGRAMME On Friday afternoons all pupils participate in John Lyon's unique Co-Curricular Programme. The purpose of this is to offer a broader curriculum to students beyond the classroom and to develop their sense of achievement, wellbeing and enjoyment. The social benefits also enhance the School's strong sense of community. The programme includes Kayaking, Archery, Golf, Public Speaking, Fives, Survival Activities, Critical Thinking, Rugby, Martial Arts, Cooking, Typing, Learning Skills, Filmmaking and the Duke of Edinburgh s Award. OUR APPROACH We have recently invested in Surface Book laptops for all staff in order to support increasingly dynamic teaching rather than the traditional desk-bound environment. Teachers are now able to teach wirelessly and create digital collaboration spaces with their classes. This is an exciting development for teaching staff and further supports the use of our Virtual Learning Environment, Firefly. Firefly enables all homework to be set and tracked online and pupils can access their work and learning resources from any device, anywhere. Boys are encouraged to bring their smartphones to school and are able to use them, guided by their teachers, as and when they feel it can enhance their learning experience or help with their organisation. In 2017 we launched a new curriculum. A John Lyon day is made up of 6 to 8 periods, with lessons of either 40 or 60 minutes, depending on year group and subject. This flexible curriculum means that we can tailor the lesson to the attention span of the age group. It also means we break away from an environment where bells mark the change of lessons; different year groups will follow different daily routines, boys are taught the importance of selfmanagement and timekeeping and are entrusted to move themselves around the School site quietly and efficiently. 8 The John Lyon School
