Letter from WISER s President Sherryl Broverman Hi, WISER Family! 2016 was an historic year for WISER from top to bottom, and there are plenty of successes to celebrate! In this report, you ll hear about the new Computer Lab, Assembly Hall, Library, Science and Engineering Lab, and Staff Homes that make up the largest expansion in WISER s history. You ll hear about the inspiring Class of 2016 that made WISER the number one girls school out of 360 schools in all of Migori County. You ll see snapshots of the outrageous successes in all of WISER s programs. We ll celebrate that 22 girls developed STEM projects exploring alternative biofuels, rechargeable electronic lighting tools, and new mathematical formulas that reached Kenyan regional-level competition. You ll see just how much your gifts matter when you support WISER s work and mission. We have a lot to be proud of in 2016, but we won t focus there for long. We re expecting even more in To each and every one of you that made these outrageous results possible, thank you! Join us in celebrating not only our success, but our hope for the future of the unstoppable, inspiring, courageous WISER Girls. Warmly, Sherryl Broverman, PhD
Growing Bigger and Better WISER Completes Historic Expansion in 2016 After a year of planning and construction, WISER s highly anticipated campus expansion is complete. Thanks to the Social Initiative in Sweden, the WISER Girls campus is now home to more resources than ever before. This expansion includes: A new Multi-Purpose School Hall that is the largest building in our entire Sub-County A Computer Lab with 30 HP Desktops that will be used for training and communications (Thank you, Arthur B. Schultz Foundation!) A second Science Lab complete with fume hoods and chemical prep rooms A new Library that can fit four times more girls, books, and study spaces A new Staff Office for collaborative work to enhance teaching Two expanded Dormitory Spaces for our growing student population Six new Faculty Homes for our teachers and their families. Did you know our teachers and their families live on campus? Four new Classrooms so that twice as many girls can learn at WISER Together, these spaces change the landscape of Muhuru Bay. Where there was once a maize field there is now a vibrant, community-supported center for achievement. WISER has always been about providing empowering opportunities for girls. This expansion, and the programs that accompany it, are just the latest step in our journey toward providing all of the resources girls need to be educated, healthy, and in control of their own lives.
Guests say we are outmatching the giants, the top performing schools in Kenya, with what we have available for our girls. WISER Principal Dorcas Oyugi
A Culture of Excellence WISER Girls Excel in 2016 National Exam In October each year, senior students take a national exam that determines if they ll go to college and university. Their hard work has paid off! For the fourth year in a row, 100% of WISER Girls will graduate while exceeding expectations for female students in Muhuru Bay. 90% of all WISER alumni are in college or university. The same community that had no precedent of high-performing girls prior to WISER is now home to Migori County s #1 Girls Secondary School.
I am truly proud of WISER and beyond thankful for the donors that make sure girls are supported, healthy, and happy throughout their education and beyond. It is through you that I am where I am today. WISER Graduate Sarah Oyula
We re proud to say that WISER was a top girls school in We re also proud to say that we celebrated success across all of our programs this year!

Girls are facing challenges and variables that boys do not. In my village, no girls go to university. In fact, I am the first in my area. So a lot of girls look to me. I have become a role model, and it feels good to be in that position. WISER Graduate Floviance Akoth
Floviance An Alumni Story When Floviance graduated as one of the highest scoring students in WISER s class of 2013, she became the first in her family to finish secondary school. Soon after, she became the first in her family admitted to university. Soon, she ll be among the first WISER alumni to earn a bachelor s degree. Floviance has a lot to be proud of but her focus remains on her family s wellbeing and ways that she can give back. I want to lead a life where I give aid to my community and change the face of my family. I want to build them a house, because right now, we are without one. I want to raise their standard of living. And Floviance s desire for outreach does not end with her family she has high hopes for all of the girls of Muhuru Bay. The competition for girls will be really hard... They re facing challenges and variables that boys do not. They risk early pregnancy, sickness. It minimizes the number of women in university. But I know they will see their goals change from aspirations to truth. Floviance s story, her success, and her outreach are making the dreams of young women in Muhuru Bay feel reachable and more possible than ever. I really enjoy the idea that I have become a role model. In my village, no girls go to university. In fact, I may be the first in my area. So, a lot of girls look to me, and it feels good. Today, Floviance is less than one year from finishing her B.S. degree in Agricultural Economics. She spends her time away from university working as a Finance and Administrative Intern for WISER. Her days are spent mentoring girls that are hoping to be where she is: a university student working to give back to her community and to WISER.
We re happy to say that Floviance s success story is one of many at WISER. These stories are what you make possible with your gifts and your support.
