Introduction from the Headmaster Bursaries Bursaries are available in the form of Assisted Place awards, which are applied for at point of entry, and Emergency Bursaries, for families who had had a dramatic recent change in their financial circumstances that requires long term assistance. Both awards are means tested, and a financial assessment is carried out by the School and United Learning. We therefore are also able to offer the BCS Visual Arts and the BCS All Round Award, for those students who excel in other areas within the School. Students shall be assessed through their Academic Scholarship assessment (please see page 5 for further details) and the Assisted Place application. This booklet gives details of the various awards available and the procedure for application. If you require further information, please contact the Admissions Registrar at Registrar@bcschool. co.uk or In our scholarship testing, we like to put the emphasis on allowing the candidates an opportunity to demonstrate their strengths, and we hope they find it to be an enjoyable process. Scholarships BCS makes a limited number of Scholarship awards. These awards recognise excellence and potential in a range of areas which are of importance to the School. All awards carry clear expectations of involvement and pupils are expected to work to their potential in all their subjects. Scholars are expected to work hard, contribute positively to the life of the School, to set a good example to other pupils and to be a credit to the School. They are also required to participate fully in the life of the School and represent the School at various functions. The value of each Award is determined by the Headmaster and the Governors Finance Committee and will not normally exceed 25%. As a reflection of the higher fees for boarding the Headmaster may consider higher levels of award in exceptional circumstances. There is a limited financial resource available each year for Scholarships and this amount cannot be exceeded, unless approved by the Governor s Finance Committee. Scholarships are reviewed annually by the Headmaster and can be reduced or withdrawn if the criteria, as set out in this document, are not achieved. The BCS Award BCS are delighted to introduce a new award this year. The BCS Award is a means tested, up to 100% of full fees, academic scholarship for pupils entering Year 7. In line with our charitable status the award has been introduced to provide an Independent education for the most able, who otherwise wouldn t be able to afford it. Awards will be offered based on attainment in the entrance papers and the outcome of the Assisted Place application. The BCS Sixth Form Award The BCS Sixth Form Award is a means tested, up to 100% of full fees, academic scholarship for pupils entering Year 12. BCS also recognises that students who enter our Sixth Form are at a stage in their education where they may choose to specialise in different academic and co-curricular areas within the School. Russell Slatford Headmaster Expectations and Review Candidates who have been successful in their scholarship application are required to enter the School in the September following the assessment week. All Scholarships are subject to an annual review against progress and effort. In all cases BCS expects all Scholars to uphold exemplary disciplinary records, exhibit impeccable manners and be a role model within the School. It is expected that the Scholars will provide a positive contribution to life at BCS. Most of the awards also carry other certain expectations: Art & Design Scholars must be prepared to take the Art & Design course to GCSE level. Performing Arts Scholars are expected to study Drama at GCSE and to participate fully in performances and productions in the school. Music Scholars are expected to play a leading role in the music performances and clubs available at Bournemouth Collegiate School. It is preferred for Music Scholars to take music to GCSE level as a minimum. Sport Scholars are expected to play a leading role in the sporting life of BCS. All Scholarships are awarded at point of entry and it is hoped that the award will stay with the student for their Senior School education. 3

Scholarship Application Process To apply for a scholarship please: Complete the registration process with the Admissions Registrar Complete and return the Scholarship Application Form Attach a full CV for the candidate, with any relevant references from sports coaches, teachers or other. It is also our procedure to contact the candidate s current school for their academic reports and a reference from the Head. If there is any reason why you would prefer us to not complete this stage, please let our Admissions Registrar know accordingly. It is largely advisable to produce a portfolio which must be handed to the School before the scholarship process The School will then be in touch with further information about our Scholarship Assessment Week. The Scholarship Assessments prepared or tutored work. For this reason we do not release examination papers and we believe all candidates have a fair chance, irrespective of previous educational experience. However, we do expect certain minimum scholarship standards in all disciplines. As a guide, candidates are expected to be in the top 10% of their cohort in any of the disciplines they apply for. Internal and external candidates will be judged equally. Scholarships are awarded at point of entry in the following disciplines: Academic Art Performing Arts Music Sport At the discretion of the Headmaster an Academic and All-Round Scholarship may be awarded, where performance in the assessments merits it, to any exceptional candidates. The School reserves the right not to award Scholarships if candidates do not achieve the standard required. Awards may be offered ranging from 5% 25% reduction in fees. All pupils should meet the normal academic requirements of the School and demonstrate an outstanding ability in their chosen area. At BCS we value the ability of a pupil to think on their feet and to evaluate novel situations effectively. To this effect we define Scholarship at BCS as the ability to synthesise, evaluate and apply knowledge to previously unseen situations. It is important to stress that we do not see our Scholarship Assessments as a memory test and consequently place low value on highly 4

The Academic Scholarship All students are considered for an Academic Scholarship, either through their entrance papers or their GCSE Predicted Grades. In Year 7 to Year 11 It is expected that Academic Scholars will have the potential to achieve A* to A grades across the majority of their GCSE subjects. As a guide, they should be in the top 10% of their cohort. All candidates will be expected to sit an English and Mathematics assessment and have an interview with the Headmaster, as part of the admissions procedure. It is from this process that the Academic Scholarships will be awarded. In Year 12 All students will complete an application form, to be accompanied by their recent School reports and references and have an interview with the Headmaster as part of the admissions process. Students will then complete an examination to determine their academic levels. Any Academic Scholarship awarded may be subject to the student obtaining sufficiently good GCSE results. Gabriella Academic Scholar When I started school I was worried about what I was about to face, but looking back, I shouldn t have been, at all. The classes and subjects I have taken in Year 7 have been challenging from day one but with the wonderful teachers everything has started to make sense. We are encouraged that if we work hard and dedicate ourselves to school, we will do well. What makes BCS so good is that the work we do is so much fun; Pathways lets us choose from exciting extra activities which we can do from Monday to Thursday. I do Science Club, Rowing and Photography but there are over 20 different things we can do. We have visited many different places on school trips, like the Black Country Museum, Salisbury Cathedral and the Winchester Science Centre to name a few. I completed my exams at the end of this year and was really happy with my results. I cannot wait for next year. 5

The Sport Scholarship The practical assessment will be the main factor on which Sports awards are based. Candidates will be required to undertake: A fitness assessment Participate within a group, helping with other sports as well as focussing on their chosen sport. Potential Scholars will be asked to demonstrate and talk about how they can add to the sporting life of BCS, how they will act as an ambassador for the School and how they can lead towards excellence across a range of sporting disciplines. It is important to note that we look for all-round ability across all the School Sports when assessing our potential Scholars. It will be expected that all candidates will currently be performing at, or above, County standard or have the potential to do so. References will be expected to be provided by any clubs that the candidate attends. We will require a portfolio outlining the candidate s best sports and the level to which they have performed to. Providing video evidence would be beneficial. Kayla Sports Scholar I have been at BCS and part of the Swimming Academy for the past 2 years. I feel privileged to be part of such a rewarding academy that has given me the opportunity to achieve great results. My biggest achievement has been medalling at the South West Regionals winning gold in the 200m breaststroke, silver in 100m breaststroke and bronze in 50m breaststroke. These results have qualified me to attend British Nationals this year in all 3 of my breaststroke events. I would say my favourite thing about BCS is all the opportunities the School has to offer. I have been part of the Rowing Academy and have represented the School at the Indoor National Rowing Championships in London. I have also enjoyed representing the School in netball, hockey, rounders and athletics. The teachers at BCS have made all my lessons enjoyable however my favourite lessons are P.E, Geography and Food Technology. 6

The Art Scholarship Candidates are expected to study Art as one of their GCSE or A-Level options, depending on their point of entry to the School. The practical element of the Art Scholarship at BCS will take consideration of two main elements: 1. The Portfolio With regards to content of the portfolio, the primary interest is to see a broad range of artistic approaches and techniques being used. A selection of work can be submitted that can consist of school or home produced outcomes. In addition, if the applicant has participated in any extra-curricular events or workshops, it would be good to see these too. Original work is better, but if this isn t possible please feel free to submit some good quality photos of the art work. Each portfolio submitted must be well organised and well presented. Size is not vitally important, but our advice would be that it should be either A2 or A1 to make sure work is exhibited to its full potential. As a further guideline, we would expect that the portfolio should include a selection of the following: High quality observational drawing Work using colour (dry or wet) Imaginative and creative outcomes Photos of any 3D work (if relevant) Sketchbook pages Exploratory work Self-initiated work Extra-curricular work It is expected that each candidate would submit up to 20 items of work. Please make sure that each portfolio is clearly labelled with the candidate s name and contact details. 2. The Practical Test Candidates will be required to: Undertake a study of an object and subsequently to place this in an environment of their own creation; this will be painted or drawn. Select their own preferred medium from pencil, pastels or paint, which will be provided by the School or they may bring their own. It is envisaged that the work produced will be two dimensional due to the time constraint. Be interviewed by the Head of Visual Arts Eliza Art Scholar I feel really privileged to be an Art Scholar at BCS. I have enjoyed all the extra opportunities to work with the Art teachers and I particularly enjoyed visiting the Arts University, Bournemouth. The Art department have supported my interest in photography and have helped me develop my skills. As well as Art I really enjoy DT and I am looking forward to taking it further in School. I sing in the school choir, we have performed at several School concerts, it's a great way to meet people in other years that you wouldn't meet otherwise. Mr Coulter, Head of Visual Arts Eliza is an extremely valued member of the Art Department and has fully submerged herself in all that is on offer on the Visual Arts Pathway. As well as being an outstanding ambassador and role model for all other students around her, she has participated in a variety of extra-curricular activities, including Junior Art and Photography Clubs. She has also been involved in visits to exhibitions and has attended Gifted & Talented sessions at the Arts University Bournemouth. Eliza is now looking ahead to developing her artistic involvement even more as she goes on to study the subject at GCSE. 7

The Performing Arts Scholarship Candidates will be expected to study Drama at GCSE or A-Level, depending on their point of entry into the School. They will be expected to participate fully in performances and productions in the School. BCS has an outstanding reputation for the quality of its productions and Scholars are generally at the heart of these performances. Candidates will be required to: Deliver an unseen piece as part of the assessment day. Applicants will be given 10 minutes to read the brief and to prepare their performance. Candidates will be allocated an individual slot where they will perform their unseen piece and will also have the opportunity to perform an optional prepared piece. It is not a requirement to have prepared pieces; this is left to the candidate to decide if they wish to showcase any other performing talents. Participate in a group exercise based on theatre and performing arts skills. The exercises will be given out on the day. No music accompaniment will be available but students may bring their own CDs or ipods if they require any electronic prompts should they decide to do a prepared piece requiring music, e.g. if they wish to showcase a dance. These tasks will test the candidates instinctive feel for performing arts and their ability to collaborate in a group situation. Candidates should feel free to show off their talents and ultimately have fun for the scholarship assessment. Freddy Performing Arts Scholar I have attended BCS since Year 7 and have always been involved in numerous plays and musicals, alongside my important academic studies. This to me is what BCS is an environment which allows you to find what you enjoy. I have studied dance (ballet, modern, tap) and drama since the age of four, and at BCS there is always time to perform whether it is in a large theatre or on an intimate performing arts evening. This is what I think makes BCS so different, as there is always an opportunity to do something in the area that holds your interest, and the staff go an extra mile to help you and make you feel rewarded for your effort. Mrs Fitzpatrick, Head of Drama. Freddie Bridgman is an outstanding actor on stage, always creating interesting and lively characters. He is focussed and driven during rehearsals and is always willing to sensitively help others improve their performance. This is an intelligent and insightful young drama student who could have a successful career in this highly competitive subject. He recently received 120 out of 120 for his practical exam result.n This young man is outstanding and I hope he has a long career in theatre. He certainly deserves recognition of us all at BCS before he is famous! 8

The Music Scholarship BCS s music Scholars contribute immeasurably to the life of the School via their leading roles in our performances. Music Scholars are expected to play a full part in their cocurricular life of the School, and would be expected to study Music at GCSE or A-Level, depending on their point of entry to the School. Candidates can enter for a music scholarship on instruments or voice and should ideally be playing two instruments, although students who have reached a high standard on only one instrument may also apply. Mark sheets from recentgrade examination should be included in the student s CV. Candidates will be required to: 1. Perform on their first instrument (and on second/third if they have one): a) 2 contrasting pieces b) Scales and arpeggios (appropriate to standard) c) Sight-reading 2. Perform aural tests, including: a) Clapping a rhythm b) Singing a melody back c) Recognising musical features 3. Interview about their music interests, achievements and activities by the Director of Music: Candidates should also make the assessors aware of any other skills they have that might support theirapplication for a much scholarship. For example, music technology, sound and lighting or composing. Candidates must feel confident to show off all their musical talent during the assessment. We would like to remind you that we are looking for pieces that demonstrate true musicality rather than technical prowess; this can be demonstrated in lower Grade pieces just as well as Grade 8 repertoire. Ultimately, musical potential is as important as attainment when offering a Music Scholarship. Oliver Music Scholar Before my arrival in Year 7 I had always been an outsider and was relatively naïve to private education, however, BCS welcomed me with open arms. Being a BCS Scholar means a lot to me; it gives me the opportunity to represent my School and take on new responsibilities. There is no lesson that I don t enjoy at BCS but my favourite has to be music; it lets me work with my creativity and lets my teachers and peers help my music ability grow. I am proud to represent my school in any way I can, whether it is by dressing smartly, performing in shows or simply just supporting my peers and my school in general. BCS has helped and supported me with my dream of being a professional singer/songwriter. They ve helped me turn my hobby of playing guitar and singing in my bedroom into performing in public and writing and recording my first professionally released single: Backyard Love Affair. In closing, I love my school and I would happily recommend it to anyone. They truly do find The best in everyone. 9

The BCS Award BCS are delighted to introduce a new award this year, in order to specifically aid pupils who may not otherwise be able to benefit from a BCS education. The BCS Award comes in the form of a means tested academic scholarship, which will offer awards up to 100% of full fees. This award is only available to students applying to join Year 7 at the beginning of the following academic year, and shall be assessed throughout the admissions process. Should you like to be considered for the BCS Award, please contact the Admissions Registrar to request an Assisted Place Application Form. Eligibility shall then be considered, and awards offered on the basis of the BCS Entrance Papers and Assisted Place outcome. The BCS Sixth Form Award The BCS Sixth Form Award is aimed to support the top academic and talented students, who will require the financial support to join BCS. Awards to a maximum of 100% will be available, following a successful application and the outcome of the Assisted Place process. We are therefore delighted to offer the following branches of the BCS Sixth Form Award: BCS Academic Award - Prospective students shall be assessed through consideration of their previous school reports and reference, an interview with the Headmaster and an academic assessment. BCS Visual Arts Award - BCS excels within the Visual Arts Department, offering Art, Photography and Textiles at A Level. To apply, prospective students shall complete both the Art Scholarship assessment and academic assessment. Successful award winners would need to study at least 2 of the visual arts subjects and be prepared to contribute to the co-curricular activities the School offers. BCS All Round Award - Prospective students may choose to specialise in different co-curricular areas within the School, including Music, Performing Arts and Sports. A strong academic performance is still required, plus a level of excellence in at least one area of the co-curricular. To be considered, all students must complete the academic assessment and scholarship assessment, which would normally be an audition or trial, in their chosen discipline. A commitment to this area of School would be required for the duration of the 6th form. All BCS Sixth Form Awards shall be subject to the student achieving sufficient GCSE results. Being in receipt of a BCS Award or BCS Sixth Form Award supersedes any other Award. 10
