1 Term 2, Week 1, 19th April, 2017 Principal s News Welcome back to school and the start of Term Two. I do hope that you had a wonderful holiday and enjoyable Easter. I managed to have a few days of leisure, in between moving house and catching up on doctors, dentist and all those appointments you delay until holiday time. April 21 Yr 6 Leadership Day Nanango 24 ANZAC DAY Liturgy 9.30am 25 ANZAC DAY Holiday - Parade At RSL 9.15am 28 Cross Country May 1 Labour Day HOLIDAY 4 Edmund Rice Liturgy 9.30am 8 Mother s Day Stall each day 9 NAPLAN It was wonderful to share the important events of Easter with my family and the St Joseph s community. I thank Fr Subin and his team for the special church celebrations over the Easter period. I also thank Easter Bunny for the special treats. This term will be a busy term of developing, learning and achieving. We continue to focus on improving the reading levels of all students and develop the crucial comprehension skills, essential to future success. Teachers will also be focusing on the development of sentences and paragraphing, ensuring our students become competent creators of text. This will also assist those students in Year 3 & 5, who will be engaging in Naplan testing in May. This test of course, is a point in time test and, whilst it provides valuable information for future development of literacy, teachers have a more accurate knowledge of student s level of understanding and development. To enhance our literacy and numeracy knowledge and understanding, St Joseph s provides an additional teacher in classrooms during these subjects. This means the extra teacher can work with those students who require guidance. We also have support staff to take individual students for additional assistance. We have high expectations for each student and we believe that each student can achieve, if given the appropriate opportunities to learn. You can assist in your child s success by ensuring they engage with reading at least 4 times per week and that they practice writing as often as they can. Current understanding in the literacy field, indicates that reading and writing mutually reinforce each other. It states that instruction may be more effective when teachers combine the two in classrooms. Research shows that teachers who develop high achieving readers and writers integrate the two. (Samuels, S. and Farstrup, A., 2001). This strategy is used in all our classrooms, ensuring students engage in learning through text, and that reading and writing complement each other. Students engage in reading and writing every day and often, multiple times each day.

2 Principal s News continued The four paintings you see before you tell four different Marist stories. And yet, viewed all together, these four paintings tell us one story - the story of the mission of Marists in the way of St Marcellin Champagnat: to make Jesus known and loved. Two of these paintings, La Valla and May Miracle will be on display in our library from Monday 24th April for one week as they journey around Australia, after beginning this journey during a Commencement Mass at Santa Teresa, 40kms from Alice Springs, on 16th February Fourviere Pledge The Dying Boy La Valla What s happening this term? 21st April-Leadership Day for our senior students. 24th April-Anzac Day celebration at 9:30am at school. 25th April-Anzac holiday and students are asked to march in the parade. 28th April-Cross Country. 1st May-Labour Day holiday. 4th May-Edmund Rice Liturgy. 8th - 12th May-Mother s Day stall. 9th - 11th May-Naplan. 12th May-Mother s Day Liturgy at 2pm. 15th May-QC Netball-senior girls. 19th May-Domestic Violence March. 25th May-Under 8 s day activities and All Hallows visit. 26th May-Sorry Day. 6th June-Marcellin Champagnat Liturgy 15th June-Athletics Field Events. 16th June-Athletics Day-School Reports sent home. 20th - 21st June-Parent/Teacher conferences. 21st - 23rd June-St Rita s visit and school holidays begin. 3 Principal News continued Respect Club Positive behaviour for Learning (PB4L) is a systematic approach to achieving expected behaviour standards in the school environment. PB4L is an on-going school wide approach to discipline, where there is a clear set of positive expectations and a procedure for teaching those expected behaviours. At St Joseph s, behaviour management is a system approach with behavioural rules based on RESPECT, NUTURE and FAITH. Each class formulates their classroom rules, complimenting the school values. At times, some students forget the rules and display behaviour that is not respectful. These students are asked to join the Respect Club during break times, for the period designated by the staff member. During Respect Club, students engage in literacy activities that promote respectful behaviour. These range from discussing their behaviour, listening to stories that show respectful actions, creating posters on respect or engaging in sentence construction that reflect the value of respect. You may receive a sheet that you are required to sign, showing the action your child is going to engage in when being respectful. This approach allows staff to teach the expected behaviours to those who require it, without interrupting learning time. If you would like any additional information, please contact me. ANZAC St Joseph s will celebrate Anzac Day next Monday 24 th at 9:30am in the school covered area. You are welcome to attend this celebration. Our school will march in the Anzac parade on Tuesday 25 th April at 9:30am, meeting at the Murgon Services Club at 9:15am. All students are encouraged to march in school uniform. Welcome It is with great pleasure that we welcome to our St Joseph s family, baby Jasmine Francis. We congratulate David (Guidance Counsellor), Amanda Francis (Media Officer) and big sister Lily. 4 APRE News Welcome back to Term 2! I hope that the holidays were filled with special family time and an opportunity to enjoy the change from the routine of school. With the unscheduled early finish to Term 1, we had to postpone our Holy Week Prayer Walk. This morning we celebrated this Easter season a time of grace and thanksgiving in our Church. We are reminded that no matter how young or old we are, what a remarkable story it is. The fact that Jesus persevered in doing God s will in his life ought to give us hope in our own lives. Easter celebrates the promise of life in the face of death. Easter celebrations also reflect on peace and forgiveness, which has come out of aggression. Let us focus this Easter Season, on the meaning of the Resurrection New Life and New Beginnings. Thank you to our senior leaders who lead us through the Stations of the Cross. Project Compassion Thank you for all your support for Project Compassion this year. We have raised a total of $ which will be sent to Caritas. This money will go towards helping those who are less fortunate in our world. Thank you for making a difference in the lives of others. Year 6 Leadership This Friday our Year 6 leaders will be spending the day with the leaders of St Patrick s Nanango. They will be participating in a leadership development day with Luke McKenna from Unleashing Personal Potential. The day is structured with dynamic activities, whole cohort team builders, initiative and problem solving activities which are interspersed in each session with a servant leadership theme. We look forward to hearing how their day goes and seeing what action will take place in our school afterwards. Anzac Day We will remember them. Next Monday 24th April, we will remember those who have fought in wars and who continue to serve our country. Please join us for our memorial service at 9.30am. A Prayer for Anzac Day God of love and peace, We bring our thanks today for the peace and security we enjoy, We remember those who have served our country in times of conflict. We give thanks for their courage, devotion and sacrifice for others. We pray for their families who lost so much. Help us to be people who believe in the importance of peace, compassion and love and who strive to live in peaceful ways each day. We ask this prayer through Jesus, who showed us how to be people of peace. Amen
