1 The Advocate 2017 Term 4 I Issue 14 From the Headmaster Mr Gareth Leechman I hope we have all returned to College rejuvenated and reenergised after a well-earned break. At the end of last term we farewelled our Year 12 Valedictorians with a reflective chapel service which was followed by a lovely Year 12 Valedictory Dinner. I would like to take this opportunity to congratulate the Year 12 students on the dignified way they finished their formal time here at Arndell Anglican College and we wish them all the best as they conduct their HSC Examinations. In the last week of term our High School students attended the Year 7 11 camp program. Overall the camp program was a clear success with many of the students coming back having thoroughly enjoyed the experience and the challenges that they needed to overcome. I would also like to congratulate the Year 11 students who attended camp as leaders, this was the first time we have conducted the camp this way and several of the teaching staff have already commented positively on the way they behaved and led the junior students. Finally I would like to thank Mr Refalo and the teaching staff for attending the camps, without their continued support our students would not be able to have enjoyed the programs on offer. The Junior School also had a very successful Grandparents Day during the last week of term. Grandparents were able to experience what it is like for their grandchildren here at Arndell Anglican College. It was a wonderful day and I would like to thank the Junior School staff for their commitment to grandparent s day. Without their support this day would not happen. Over the course of the holidays a few staff appointments for 2018 were finalised. Mrs Tamasin Lowe has accepted the position as Deputy Head of the Junior School and to replace her as Stage 3 Coordinator is Mr Steven Catt, who has been appointed in an acting role for the next twelve months. Several teaching positions have been finalised and I will inform the College Community in due course as to who our new appointments for 2018 are. I wish all of the College Community all the best as we enter the last term of the year. Jeremy Clark Valedictory Proverbs 2:1-3 My child, listen to what I say, and treasure my commands. 2 Tune your ears to wisdom, and concentrate on understanding. 3 Cry out for insight, and ask for understanding. I was asked to give the message at the Valedictory this year. Please find below an excerpt about the value of lifelong learning. How committed are you to your study? How devoted are you to your work? I want to tell you about a man who lived 500 years ago. He s a hero of mine. How s this for commitment? He claimed to be so busy that he got up three hours earlier to pray each day. He looked intently at the scriptures, making sure he understood everything in case he didn t make it. I remember a Maths poster I once saw which said, Don t do it until you get it right, do it until you can t get it wrong. I think this man, Martin Luther, a reformer, fits that bill perfectly. We want a community that is learning. We are learning through Christ. We want you to be lifelong learners. Lifelong learners care far more about how they love others than about marks. Martin Luther kept learning and challenged the church in its teachings, nailing 95 statements to a door for discussion. His challenge pointed people to the free gift available in Jesus, no longer did people have to feel guilty that they hadn t done enough. The Proverb in your order of service is an encouragement to be a lifelong learner. To look intently. To listen to those older than you, to treasure their wisdom. But the passage is more than just developing disciplines, more than just knowing things. Our hope is that as you leave you leave with an understanding of the Christian message. You may not agree with it. But you leave with an opportunity to look further into this message. God bless and may you continue on the journey of lifelong learning. Be a hero for hard work and learning. May you be those who use your learning to love others. Strategic Arndell Mrs Donna Allen Term 4 Senior School Strategic Learning Students In Term 4, many subjects plan to use formal examinations as part of the assessment process and this usually means fewer assessments. Therefore students enrolled in the Strategic Learning Programs will not have Assignment Assistance (or AA) classes but instead will be learning and applying studying techniques in those lessons. Literacy lessons will continue as normal until the week before exams when we do not remove them from class for Literacy, this is so as to prevent them missing important exam information. Please encourage your son or daughter to continue to attend their AA lessons over the next few weeks to benefit from these study lessons.

3 Arndell Mrs Roxanne Arnold Arndell Anglican College will soon commence the enrolment process for our Year cohort. If you or someone you know is seeking to enrol your child in 2019, please contact our Enrolments office to make arrangements. As demand for positions at the College increase, so does the need to commence this process earlier. Scholarship applications for Year 7 and Year are now open. Please refer to the College website for further information. Arndell Anglican College will again be offering scholarships across three categories being academic, all-rounder and performing arts. Uniform Notice Mr James Webb Girls Uniform Length There has been some concern this semester regarding the length of some of the girls College uniform, particularly the Senior girls skirts. As per page 12 in the Student Diary, Mandatory dress length is mid knee when standing. Currently there are quite a few girls whose uniforms are not compliant with this requirement. As we have recently changed into summer dresses for Yrs 7-9, please check that your daughter s uniform length meets this rule. Staff will be closely monitoring this dress requirement to ensure our girls present smartly and modestly. In future, detentions may be issued for non-compliance. Book Club Volunteer Needed Mrs Deborah Sharvell Our wonderful current book club co-ordinator will not be continuing to volunteer next year due to work commitments and the College is seeking a volunteer to continue supporting our Book Club program. All training will be provided and would require support twice per term to collect and submit orders to Scholastic online as well as the sorting and distribution of orders on delivery. If you might be able to assist, please contact Mrs Sharvell in the Junior School library.

4 Arndell Miss Kristen Bailey Recently 3 Arndell students were chosen on the State Interschools team to represent Team NSW. During the school holidays Angelina Thompson, Lucy Batten and Meeri Lee made the long trip to Toowoomba, QLD to compete in the week-long event. Riders were chosen after their successful campaign representing Arndell at ENSW State Interschools earlier in the year. Angelina of Year 4 was selected to represent Team NSW in Dressage, Show Horse and Combined Training. She had wonderful week coming home with 5th place in the Dressage and 5th overall in Show Horse. Lucy of Year 10 was selected to represent Team NSW in Dressage and Combined Training. Lucy also had a successful week placing 6th overall in the Dressage and 4th in the Combined Training. Lastly, Meeri Lee of Year 11 was selected to represent Team NSW in Dressage and Meeri placed an impressive 7th overall. Our students must be congratulated not only on their brilliant results but also for the sportsmanship they displayed over the week of competition. Well done girls!

8 2018 Orientation Events Mrs Roxanne Arnold 2018 Pre Kindergarten Our Orientation Morning for Pre Kindergarten 2018 will be held on Tuesday 24 October 2017, commencing at 9.30 am and concluding at am. The time will provide an opportunity for parents and children to become acquainted with other members of their class, their new classroom and the College itself. Parents and children will also have the opportunity to meet our 2018 Pre Kindergarten teachers as well as members of the Junior School Leadership Team Kindergarten Our Orientation Morning for Kindergarten 2018 will be held on Wednesday 25 October 2017, commencing at 9.30 am and concluding at am. There will be a short program for the children in the Kindergarten classrooms followed by morning tea with parents. Information about Kindergarten procedures will be available as will the opportunity for parents to ask questions regarding Kindergarten Year 7 Orientation Day 21 November Running from 8.30 am through to 3.05 pm. Students are to assemble in the Auditorium and wear their current school sports uniform. Parent Information Session 22 November pm in the Auditorium, our parent session provides the opportunity to meet College staff to talk about the transition from junior to secondary school. Testing Day Saturday 25 November am to pm in the College Gymnasium. Testing will include basic literacy and numeracy. At Students should bring appropriate equipment and a morning tea for this session. Please contact the enrolments office on should you have not yet received a letter in relation to any of these orientation events.
