It is a great experience for our students and they enjoyed listening to a range of musical pieces. Twenty-seven students enjoyed a hot and sunny day at Cheviot for the Hurunui Swimming Sports. It was fantastic to see our school values being demonstrated. All the students tried their best, which was great to see. Swimming in our pool has continued this week, along with play-based learning in the junior room, inquiry in the senior rooms, art for the Amuri A&P Show, assessments and reading, writing and maths. Welcome. This week we welcome Riley to our school as a Year 4 student. Riley and his family have moved over from Hokitika. We also welcome Charlotte and her family, as she starts her first few days at school as a Year 1. We wish you both all the best with your learning at our school. Mufti Day. Last week we raised $ from our black and red mufti day. The head students have donated the money to a very worthy cause - please read their message below. Thank you to everyone who donated to this. It is great to see our students and school supporting the wider Canterbury community. Principal's Award. The Principal's Award this week goes to two students who have shown excellence through aiming high and trying their best. Well done to Laura and Ally who modelled excellence in both the school swimming sports and the Hurunui swimming sports. 1/7

2 The key competency certificates were presented at assembly today to the follow students: Lexie - for showing excellence with her work. Noah A - for showing integrity. Jenny - for having a positive attitude and overcoming challenges. Sophie O - for showing integrity by making good choices. Rory - for relating well to others. Josh - for showing excellence by always doing his best. Kiana - for completing her work to an excellent standard. Flynn P - for completing his work to a high standard. Regan - for showing perseverance and trying hard at swimming sports. Emily - for contributing in a positive way as head girl by always doing her best. School Swimming Sports results. Mrs Florance will share the results for this next week and they will be in the newsletter next week. ICAS and Great Kiwi Competitions. A letter will go home next week about the ICAS competitions in Digital Technologies, Science, Writing, Spelling, English and Mathematics. ICAS assesses higher order thinking and problem-solving skills. Each competition is $9.50. This year the University of Canterbury is launching the great Kiwi English, Mathematics and Science competitions for schools. The Kiwi competitions are written by New Zealand teachers for New Zealand students and are based on the New Zealand curriculum. The online competitions will be run in the last two weeks of Term 2. All participating students will be awarded a certificate and prizes will be awarded to top students in each year group. The cost for a student to participate is $8.50 per competition entered. A letter about this will go home next week as well. We will be offering both the Great Kiwi competitions and ICAS for students. Please complete the letters and return them to school if you wish for your child to compete in one of these competitions. Wednesday clubs Y4-8. The clubs programme starts on Wednesday 8th March. A notice will go home on Monday with the clubs the students are in. We have tried to arrange for students to have their first choice, but some clubs were more popular, so some students have their second choice or even third choice. Students in the mountain biking club will need to bring their mountain bike and helmet and those in the photography club will need to bring their digital camera. Thank you to the parents who have offered to run or help with a club. Bikes. If your child rides a bike to school please can you make sure that they are careful when they take their bike out of the bike rack. We have had a bike damaged this week as it was moved and dropped to the ground. If there is a bike in the way please show patience and wait for the owner to come and take it. If a bike needs to be moved please show respect for the property of others and carefully move it and place it in another bike stand. Thank you. School policy review. The policy for recognition for cultural diversity is currently under review. Please participate in this review by visiting the website The username is hanmersprings and the password is hanmerkids. Click on the 'current review' tab and then click on the 'Recognition of Cultural Diversity' policy to read the policy. The red symbol in the right hand corner is the review tool. Select 'parent' as the reviewer type name and follow the prompts to submit your rating. If you do not have internet access please see Barbara in the office and she will print off a copy of the policy for you to review. Thank you. Kindness Kitkat. Well done to the recipients of the Kindness Kitkat this week. The head students have been out looking for acts of kindness. See below for the recipients of this week's kindness kitkat. 5 Ka kite ano Michelle Acting Principal A message from the Board of Trustees. The Board of Trustees interviewed the Principal candidates on Monday. This was a thorough process with the involvement of students and the PTA. After a robust process and careful consideration of the applicants the Board of Trustees have decided not to make an appointment at this time and they will be re-advertising the position. While this is not ideal we are very clear that we want to make an excellent appointment. Michelle Saric will continue in the Acting Principal role in the interim. Applications for the re-advertised position close at the end of March and the interviews will be held towards the end of the term. A message from the Head Students. This week it s been a great week at Hanmer Springs School. Tuesday saw the Hurunui Zone swimming sports held in Cheviot. It was a lovely hot day. It was a lot of fun and so many of the school values were shown consistently by the swimmers. Well done to everyone and thanks again Mrs Florance for organising us all to get over there. The red and black day last Friday raised $165.90, this has been donated to Steve Askin s family through the give a little page. Thanks everyone for donating! It's that time of the week again when two students get recognised for being kind. The first kitkat goes to a girl in the junior school who is very kind and sweet with the new children when they arrive for their first half days and first full days at school. Thanks Ava for being kind to these kids, you make kindness cool! The second kitkat goes to another girl who is always happy, positive and openly kind.
