1 Year 5 Newsletter It was really great this week to see so many of you at Parent s Evening, taking the opportunity to have a look at your child s books and seeing the progress they have made. I really hope that the discussions with your child s class teacher were beneficial and enabled you to celebrate the many successes with your child. Please remember though, should the evening have raised any concerns please don t hesitate to contact your class teacher on the addresses below to discuss them. Mrs Webster. Our Learning. Over the past few weeks, Year 5 have been producing lots of non-fiction writing based on a short video called Flatlife, and a book called Tuesday, all about a frog invasion! They have been creating some really amazing diary entries, police reports and newspaper articles, as well as some fantastic drama and role play. In Maths, some groups have been working on addition and subtraction, exploring the different methods of solving calculations and then applying these to problem solving and reasoning questions. The other maths groups have moved onto multiplication and division, working on being able to carry out mental and written calculations effectively. In Geography we have been learning about rainforests, the different layers of the rainforest and the types of animals who live in them. During our Science lessons we have been learning about Space, the different planets as well learning about the moon and the stars in the learning dome. Computing has involved learning about how to create podcasts and in our DT lessons we have been starting to make our Alebrijes out of paper mache and wire. Communication. TT Rockstars Several parents mentioned last week that their children were finding TT Rockstars hard due to the time pressure and division questions. We have made a change to the admin side to reduce the number of trickier questions however we cannot change whether there are division questions but they all do directly relate to the multiplication facts. It is important the children are learning their times tables but if there is an alternative method that is working better for them then that is fine to use. Year 5 Christmas Play. As I am sure that you are no doubt aware, we have begun to learn our songs for our Christmas play, each time we learn a song, the words and music will appear on FROG for your child to learn the words at home. All scripts were sent home before half term and it would be great if you could support your child when they are learning their lines. We also sent home a list of costume requirements for each part, these are required in school by Monday 27 th November. We will, of course, be able to help out with any costume where possible, so please let your class teacher know asap if you are having problems with any aspect of the costume list. 360 Sports Education 24th November Inset Day Holiday Hype & Football Camps at Ravenscote Junior School. 3 Christmas Diary Dates Christmas Assemblies. Parents are invited. Assemblies will start promptly at 9.30am Year 3 Tuesday 12th December Year 4 Wednesday 13th December Year 5 Thursday 14th December Year 6 Friday 15th December Wednesday 13th December Parents and Children are cordially invited to our Christmas Carol Concert in the school hall 7pm to 8.30pm. Wednesday 20th December Children can come to school wearing their Christmas jumper (instead of their school jumper). This will also be our Christmas Lunch Day (see letter attached to the newsletter). In the afternoon the children will be having their Christmas Fayre (pupils only). Thursday 21st December Last day of term normal finish time of 3.25pm

4 RE Updates Festival Fun Thank you so much to Mrs Beczek for working with the Asian Culture Club to help coordinate a stick (dandiya) dance for Diwali. Mrs Beckek also kindly presented an informative talk to all our pupils at a whole school assembly. Staff and pupils alike, agreed that the assembly was a very enjoyable one. The children in Asian Culture Club did a splendid job of dancing many lunchtimes were spent in rehearsal for their big moment on stage. Thank you also to Mrs Shah who kindly donated a dozen pairs of sticks. If you would like to see this assembly, it is available to watch on FROG. Harvest Festival Total It is with great thanks to all those who donated money, that I am pleased to announce that a grand total of was raised by the pupils of Ravenscote to support Hooke Court in Malawi. Your donations have been very much appreciated and have been used by the Hooke Court funded schools in Malawi, to purchase exercise books, pens, pencils and desks for the children so that they don t have to sit on the floor. 5 THE LEARNING DOME I enjoyed the Planetarium because it was all inside a big dome and we could see the constellations of the stars. The part I enjoyed most was going inside the Planetarium and seeing the demonstration of the phases of the Moon. I enjoyed all the demonstrations especially when we saw how we get night and day! By Isabelle James. I enjoyed the Planetarium s hologram stars because we could see the constellations. It was a really good experience. My favourite part was when we saw the Moon going round the sun to see the different phases. The entrance was awesome because we crawled through a tunnel. By Fletcher Tobin.

6 Judo Judo We are really proud of the children who last weekend fought at the Judo competitions. They all did really well. The Judo 4 Juniors players of the day went to Oliver Roberts and Rushil Sriastava as they both won the gold. Amy Elmes also won an award as she s a white belt and has only being doing Judo for 17 weeks. Amy managed to beat the girl who was a yellow belt to get the bronze medal. Here is the list of pupils who were representing Judo 4 Juniors at the weekend and the award they won.
