1 SACRED HEART COLLEGE SENIOR GIRLS BOARDING HOUSE COORDINATOR (GBHC) Position Information Document CONTEXT Sacred Heart College Senior is a Catholic College in the Marist tradition. A Marist school is a centre of learning, of life, and of evangelizing. As a school it leads its students and staff to learn to know, to be competent, to live together and most especially to grow as persons (Institute of Marist Brothers of the Schools, 1998, p.49). The importance of guiding and providing support to young people through residential living cannot be overstated, as parents entrust the care of their daughter to staff of the Boarding House. The Girls Boarding House Coordinator (GBHC) is delegated to exercise direct responsibility for the day to day administration of the boarding house and for the overall coordination of the boarders in the Girls Boarding House. While routine matters are delegated to Dormitory Supervisors, it is the responsibility of the GBHC to ensure that pastoral care, study, supervision, co-curricular activities and the behaviour management of the boarding community operate at optimum level. In particular, the GBHC will collaborate with the Director of Boarding in relation to the pastoral care of boarders including behaviour management, and in the organisation of the timetable and associated administrative matters, with a special regard for the overall wellbeing of each boarder. KEY RELATIONSHIPS The GBHC reports to the Director of Boarding and works collaboratively with the Boys Boarding House Coordinator (BBHC). In addition, this person works closely with the Principal, Head of Senior School, Teaching staff, Boarding staff and Health Care Centre staff. The GBHC will also be in communication with Counsellors, boarding students and their families and carers. The GBHC has responsibility for the day-to-day management of the girls boarding house staff.

2 KEY SELECTION CRITERIA Appropriate qualifications (community services, youth work, teaching, Certificate IV in Residential Care) and experience; Leadership experience; Proven ability to manage staff; Excellent planning, organisational and time management skills; High level of administration skills; PERSON SPECIFICATION The GBHC will be: Aware of, responsive to and give witness to the Catholic and Marist values at Sacred Heart College; A skilled and experienced administrator Conscious of and responsive to best practice within the boarding house; A positive role model for young people; Able to offer the necessary help to boarders as they approach and move through secondary school; Skilled in people management and with excellent communication skills; Able to empathise with and respond to the complex demands of a coeducational boarding environment; Able to enthuse and inspire boarders, and work with colleagues to create a positive collaborative living and working environment; Able to work in close cooperation with the Director of Boarding and the BBHC; Responsive to the requirements of Abuse and Neglect legislation and guidelines; Able to analyse and resolve problems in a systematic and effective manner; Enthusiastic in regard to regular Professional Learning opportunities. SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES The GBHC is appointed by the Principal. The specific responsibilities of the role are as follows: As a Religious Leader: Encourage and support the development of the Catholic and Marist culture and traditions of the boarding house; Give personal witness to Catholic and Marist values in carrying out their duties; Support the primary faith experiences in the boarding house Organise, encourage and participate in the liturgical, sacramental and prayer life of the boarding house; Support the link between the boarding house, the school and the local Church.

3 As a Pastoral Leader: Be responsible for the welfare, behaviour education and behaviour management of boarding students; Maintain a knowledge of contemporary pastoral theory and practice as it applies to residential care of boarders; Facilitate the integrity of a boarding house environment which is conducive to optimal outcomes for boarders, in all areas of their development; Identify boarders at risk, clearly articulating the concerns and working with them on a one-to-one basis and when appropriate informing the Director of Boarding and the Head of Senior School; Be available to boarders, staff, families and carers Induct new boarders into the boarding house and where necessary facilitate peer support; Facilitate the resolution of informal harassment complaints of boarders. As a Community Leader: Promote positive relationships within the boarding house community, which are reflective of Gospel values; Monitor and support boarder wellbeing; As an Administrative Leader: Ensure that the daily operations of the boarding house are carried out effectively and efficiently; Be available to the families and carers of present and prospective boarders; Regularly monitor the boarding house routine in areas such as the Health Care Centre, and the dining rooms. ADDITIONAL DUTIES The GBHC will: Assume responsibility for the boarding house during any absence of the Director of Boarding; Work closely with the BBHC; Respond to other duties as they emerge and as they are determined through discussion with the Director of Boarding; Meet on a weekly basis with the Director of Boarding and the BBHC. WORK HEALTH AND SAFETY (WHS) All staff/workers are required to take reasonable care of your own health and safety and take reasonable care to prevent your actions or omissions adversely affecting the health and safety of others. In particular workers will: follow safe work procedures and reasonable instructions designed to prevent work injury and disease;

4 encourage colleagues and others on the worksite to adhere to safe work practices; be aware of and comply with relevant College WHS policies and procedures, support and contribute to the improvement of safe systems of work and safe work practices; participate in relevant WHS training programmes; report hazards and unsafe work practices to their Head of Department; suggest changes to eliminate workplace hazards or minimise the risks associated with them; report in written form all work related incidents and near misses which result in injuries, ill health, or property damage in accordance with the College policy/procedure, and; support the consultative processes for managing WHS when opportunities arise.
