1 Issue 22 28th February 2014 Principal s Message I would like to begin my first Principal s Message of this half term by looking back to the final few days of last half term and to the half term break itself. It cannot go unmentioned that our College production of We Will Rock You was outstanding, with the articles in The County Press and on Yoppul fully supporting and praising the excellent work of all the students and staff involved. The final performances, the Saturday matinee and the Saturday evening, were simply wonderful, with the excitement, adrenalin and passion palpable from students, staff and, most importantly, the audience. Well done again to everyone involved on such a professional production. Photographs and images can be found on the College website. Further details of the forthcoming show, The Tempest, and audition details will be included in future Parent Bulletins. During half term itself, some members of our College Year 13 participated in what can only be considered their final College Trip. The students organised (with some necessary support and guidance from staff of course!) the Ski Trip to Saalback, Austria. A thoroughly enjoyable time was had by all involved with a full report and photographs available on the College website. Students in Year 12 are already beginning to discuss where they wish to go for their final College trip, with Skiing and Disneyland both being hotly debated! Whilst all of this excitement was occurring, I want to mention and indeed praise the students who, I know, will have worked tirelessly throughout the break, completing revision, coursework and preparation for their forthcoming examinations. This half term, the final half term before we enter the Examination Series, promises to again be a busy and productive time. Intervention days for Year 11 students are completed, Mock Examinations for Mathematics and English occur next Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday, Year 11 one-to-one interviews take place, support sessions, revision sessions and individual support for all students sitting any external examinations begin in earnest! We pride ourselves on our excellent results and support for our students, but as always, if there are concerns or comments then please do not hesitate to contact us at the College so that we can implement, where possible and appropriate, further support for individuals and groups of students. Finally, may I remind you that next week is National Book Week. Further information regarding the activities has been sent home with students today and is included in other sections of this Parent Bulletin. As of yet, my decision regarding which book character I will come dressed as is still to be made; however, I am aware that classes and students have been discussing this and, as with our previous Day of the Doctor, I very much look forward to seeing our students (and staff!) parading around the College! All money raised on the day will be donated to Book Aid International with further details available on their website, Book Week: Monday 3 rd Friday 7 th March As you will have read in the previous Parent Bulletin, it is World Book Day on Thursday, 6 th March In order to celebrate this, and as part of our ongoing commitment to encourage and support our students to develop and extend, and take enjoyment in their reading, we are organising a Book Week (Monday, 3 rd Friday, 7 th March) with a number of events and competitions. The main events are outlined below and we hope that we can rely on your support in encouraging your child s participation. A letter giving full details of the following events arranged has been given to all students today. In addition, the letter is on the College website and will be ed with this bulletin. Scholastic Book Fair - Tuesday, 4th Tuesday, 11th March, based in Lower College Bookmark competition Guess Who Read That! D.E.A.R Book Character Fancy Dress - Thursday, 6th March. Students are encouraged to come into College dressed as a book character. 1 donation to take part in this event. Proceeds will be given to Book Aid International for work in libraries in Africa. Read for My School 2014 for Year 7 and 8 students only Worship Evening The College Worship Evening will be held on Friday, 7 th March for students and families to enjoy together a time of worship using modern songs and style. Refreshments will be available from 6.30 pm, and again at the interval, with the time of worship beginning at 7 pm. The time of worship will draw to a close at about 9pm. Car parking will be available on the MUGA, while the event itself will take place in the Sixth Form Hall. We ask prayers for: Year 6 students and families who await their confirmation letter of Year 7 place; the things we give up for Lent in order to focus on our faith.

2 Global Rock Performance - We would like to invite you to watch this years entry of the Global Rock Challenge Medusa at Portsmouth Guildhall on Wednesday, 23rd April Tickets are now on sale 12 each and available to order from College until Friday 7th March. Please contact Mrs Claire Howard, Finance Officer if you are interested. Cashless System - As we are sure you are aware, we operate a Cashless System at Christ the King College. Parents and students are encouraged to use Parent Pay to top up the dinner money account, pay for trips, Governors Fund etc. We have now had cash machines installed at Upper College and Lower College dining areas to enable students to top up their dinner account. Please note that the catering staff will no longer be able to accept cash at the food counter. Please ensure you either top up the account at home via Parent Pay or give cash to your child to top up their account. In addition, we would encourage students to have a biometric image taken of their finger print. This enables them to scan at the till or top up machine, without having to use the cashless card. If your child has lost their card, or not yet had this image taken, please complete the consent form and return to Miss Curliss at UC Administration Office. College Uniform - We would remind parents and students that hoodies are not appropriate outdoor wear while at College and are not part of the correct uniform required. Thank you for supporting the high standards of uniform at Christ the King College. Theme: Lent Almighty God, whose blessed Son was led by the Spirit to be tempted by Satan: come quickly to help us who are assaulted by many temptations; and, as you know the weaknesses of each of us, let each one find you mighty to save; through Jesus Christ your Son our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever.
