Mr. and Mrs. Smith have been dedicated to keeping the school running and producing successful, educationallyprepared and Christ-honoring students since the beginning. The staff and student body wanted to surprise and thank the Smiths for their many years of diligent service. An anonymous school family agreed to lend Mr. and Mrs. Smith their cabin in Canaan Valley for a week in July. The students each donated money to help pay for gas, food, and anything else the Smiths might need during their trip. Also, the trip was arranged so that the Smiths children and grandchildren would be able to join them for part of their wellearned vacation. This gift was presented to the Smiths at a surprise assembly. Both of them were completely surprised and very thankful to their staff and students. Here s to twenty years, and many more! 2 Our fiveyear improvement plan has many excellent goals to continue the refinement, growth, and development of the school. We are committed to a school of excellence that honors our Lord in everything we do. Mr. Robert Smith Change is a Good Thing By Mitchell Morris There are many exciting renovations planned for summer here at the school to help improve the experience! The school is planning on renovating the computer lab with new carpet, paint, tables, etc; paving the walkway around the gym and the teacher parking; completing the Joy Center wall and the ceiling area of the elementary building porch; and many other small projects. There are many people lined up to help with the work: Heiner Construction, volunteer parents, Mountaineer Power, and Brown Asphalt. The great plans have been in the making for about two years, and thanks to some generous gifts this year, these plans will be able to be fulfilled. Mr. Smith said that he is pleased to move forward on some major campus development work and is especially happy to update the computer lab equipment and furnishings, and to get another big section of paving complete. West Virginia Dance Festival By Jaymie Ferrebee The student/teacher parking area will be paved for the start of the 2016 school year Every year, the state of West Virginia hosts an annual dance festival. Dance companies from all over the state send their young dancers to the state capital to participate in a weekend full of dance classes, performances, and more. This year, the festival was held the weekend of April th, and WCCS students Cassidy Ward and Jaymie Ferrebee went down to Charleston to participate. Cassidy is a member of Schrader Youth Ballet and Jaymie is a member of Mid Ohio Valley Ballet Company, both located in Parkersburg. They arrived at the WV Dance Festival and received their level s class schedule on Friday, and took dance classes the rest of the weekend. Cassidy s studio went to Charleston to be adjudicated a few months before to be able to perform at the festival on Friday night, and earned a spot in the line-up. They performed first on Friday night. Their piece was called Slavonic, choreographed by Cassidy s instructor, Velma Schrader. The weekend ended successfully. Cassidy and Jaymie returned home Sunday afternoon, sore and tired, but more enriched and improved in the arts. T H E P R O W L E R

5 Quiz Kids V O L U M E 1 9 I S S U E 6 By: Demichelle Krupinski Jake Headley, Mrs. Massar, Madeline Kuhl, Hannad Davis, Katie Benson, Sydney Strause, and Hannah Headley Our Bible quiz team may be small, but they are mighty! For years our school has had an outstanding bible quiz program with fantastic seasons. For those of you who don t know, Bible quizzing is a fast paced, quick recall game of Bible verses. The team studies a pre-determined section of the Bible for a whole school year and is quizzed on the verses against other teams. Whoever buzzes in (jumps up off the electronically programmed chair pad) first has to answer the question before the twenty-second time period is up. If they get the question right, they receive 20 points for their team. Diane Massar, is not just the school s music teacher, she is the Bible quiz leader. She has been coaching the senior high quiz team for sixteen years and has been coaching the juniorhigh/ elementary quiz teams for around 12 years. Not only have our senior high teams been nationally ranked, they have won numerous titles across the country, and have won in the state Bible quiz competition 13 out of 16 years. This year s team jr. high team features freshman Hannah Headley; eighth graders,katie Benson, Madeline Kuhl, and Hannah Davis; and seventh graders, Jake Headley and Sidney Strause. The elementary team includes, sixth graders Hunter Gutberlet, Sam Cremeans, and Kyle Mahoney; fifth graders, Katie Michael, Elijah Kuhl, and Reagan Vernon; and last but not least, fourth graders Alec Marshall, Brandon Russell, and Kaden Spencer. On the way down to quiz tournaments to Georgia, North Carolina, and other states to quiz, the team members have fun quoting and asking each other quiz questions in preparation for the events ahead. I am very impressed with the work ethic and study habits of many of the quizzers, says Mrs. Massar. For example, one of the team s best quizzers is seventh grader, Sidney Strause, has memorized 10 and a half of the 16 chapters they have covered in Matthew which equals a total of 333 verses! Her personal goal was to memorize all the text for Junior High next year which is 375 verses in Hebrews and 1 Peter 1. Mrs. Massar s favorite verse from all the chapters over the years is, Romans 8:28 which is, And we all know that all things work together for good to them that love God, to them who are the called according to his purpose. Quizzing isn t just about all the traveling and winning awards. It s about the privilege of studying God s word and getting closer to a better understanding of what these chapters are about. Track and Baseball States By Josh Stevens The track and baseball teams both competed at their state tournaments this season and had good results. The baseball team received 5 th place and each track team placed 2 nd, except for the middle school girls who placed 4th. The baseball team unfortunately lost in the first round to Trinity. They competed for the entire game, but couldn t pull out the win at the end. They came back strong their next game, though, and destroyed Grace 15-0 to secure 5 th place in the tournament. Senior Douglas Ernest said, It was a fun tournament and I had a blast getting to play baseball this year. It was a great last game to end my high school sports career. Health concerns didn t stop the track team from finishing strong. Multiple runners were sick, but they persevered, and every team besides the middle school girls placed in 2 nd. Junior Ian Harris said, We feel like we could ve won if our health didn t hinder us, but I m still proud of the way we ran. The baseball team focuses on the competition

6 Super Sixth Grade By: Nic Carpenter Our sixth grade class has been very busy in math. They have been learning about geometric shapes, angles, and algebraic equations. They got to study solar systems in science, and WWII in history. They have learned about prepositional phrases and adverbs in English. They are also learning about the life of Christ in bible class. On May 7-9 th,accompanied by the fifth grade they traveled to Washington D.C. They had a great time visiting all the major sites including the White House, Capitol, Arlington National Cemetery, all of the monuments, the Pentagon memorial, and Mount Vernon. It s been a busy year! The 6th grade prepared to follow Mr. Kratzer on another learning adventure! Outstanding Chemist at WCCS By: Jaymie Ferrebee On April 7th at Marietta College, attend the event was recognized a dinner, awards ceremony, and and received a certificate and a seminar was held for outstanding chemists in high school or lege chemistry professor was check.
