1 Prospect School N O V E M B E R Theme of the Week ~ Global Citizenship Put a cherry on top! I N S I D E T H I S I S S U E : Children in Need Prospect Express Reading 1, 2 & 3 4 Sports Fixtures & Results 4 Wow Lecture 5 Chemistry Club 5 This year Children in Need was held on Friday 13 th of November. To raise money, Prospect School set up a series of fun and different events in which most of the school participated. Dates for your Diary: Year 9 Parents evening Thursday 3rd December Friday 18th December End of Term 2 Students had set up cake sales; selling home baked and shop brought cakes to start of the charity event. This was followed by the biggest and most obvious event was the non-uniform day. This raised hundreds of pounds for the charity day. The students paid 1 to wear a onesie and paid 2 to wear normal, casual clothes. The variety of onesies were humorous. Examples were Superman, Where s Wally and Mini the Mouse. At the start of lunch, students from all around the school were herded in to the school hall by their desire to watch teachers become the laughing stock of the school, and to get their own back on the teachers.

2 Seven teachers and students; from the Sixth form, Maths and English assisted learning teachers, volunteered to be surrounded by hundreds of students as each student paid to splat creamed pie in the teachers and students faces. The students paid 20 pence to enter the hall as an audience, to witness this humiliation. They paid additional funds to cream pie the volunteers. After the teachers were pied students witnessed Mr Farrell, a support teacher, having his legs waxed by Ms Evans. After Mr Farrell s agonising session, a sixth former had his legs waxed. OUCH! The non-school uniform and pre-event activities raised a massive 1800 for Children in Need. The charity was set up by the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) to make sure that every child has the dream childhood; where they are safe, happy, and secure and have a chance to reach their potential. The money helps children around the country who are less fortunate that others. To find out more information about Children in Need, visit:

3 Many congratulations must go to Stephanie Martindale in Year 12 who baked up a storm for Children in Need with cupcakes and Pudsey Cookies. In addition, she was selling Children in Need bags of sweets and raffle tickets in order to win a Teddy Bear. On the final day of the cake sale, additional donations were made by students and staff at the Bridge. In total Stephanie and her team of sixth formers raised an amazing 300 over a two week period. Playing for Charity On Friday 20 th November, the staff challenged the sixth form students to a football match in order to raise money for Children In Need. Players paid to play and spectators put their hands in their pockets in order to watch this keenly contested match. In the end the staff ran out 6-3 winners. The match was the climax of a week s worth of charity football matches organised by sixth formers Fehad Malik, Josh Evans and Connor Livermore. All in all they raised 100 for Children in Need,

4 The Prospect Express Reading Programme We have recently launched an exciting new Reading Programme for identified students in Year 7. The Prospect Express runs three times a week both before and after school. Students work though Lexia Strategies, a web-based program that focusses on fundamental literacy skills with an age-appropriate interface. Students receive certificates as they complete each of the five levels. Certificates are presented weekly by Mr Davies. Well done to all those who have recently received their first certificate. Mr Farrall congratulates Afternoon Group successes. 5 P A G E 5 Wow Lecture On Wednesday 4th and Thursday 5 th November Year 8 and 9 students participated in the first Chemistry for all project Wow lectures in which Dr Ben Littlefield demonstrated lots of experiments including the elephant s toothpaste, whoosh bottle, healing polymers and much more. Jessica Smith: The lecture was full of fun demonstrations and was awesome. It was a fun way of learning science and I enjoyed seeing the different experiments including the one where he added dry ice to warm water. It was excellent! Chemistry Club: Chemistry for All Project The first Chemistry crew was held on Wednesday 4 th November. The Chemistry crew made cupcakes (like the ones below) without certain ingredients to find out why the different ingredients were important in the baking process. We worked in teams to make the cakes and got to try all of them at the end.
