Winter Concert 6:30-7:30 pm The month of November was an active one for our school community. Thank you to all the families who were able to attend the Parent-Teacher-Student Conferences following the Progress Reports. Your partnership in your child s learning is vitally important. By continuing to support your child in developing strong Learning Skills you are helping them develop strategies that contribute to success throughout life. In November, our focus in Character Education was Responsibility and Anti-Bullying. Our December Character Trait is perseverance, which is being introduced in assemblies this first week. The month of December brings many winter celebrations and special events. Many of our students are participating in acts of kindness that make a difference in the lives of our community. Our school initiatives include a Toy Drive, the Hat and Mitten Tree, Backpack Kits and a food drive. Dec. 22 Dec. 25- Jan. 5 Jan. 8 Jan Last Day of Classes (regular dismissal time) - Holidays - Classes resume - Kindergarten Registration Begins Now that the winter weather is arriving, students are encouraged to dress warmly and appropriately for the outdoors.. We have also been working hard on safe play during our recess and lunchtime breaks on the school yard. Keeping snow on the ground, avoiding ice patches and continuing to speak respectfully to each other are goals as we move forward. We are all reminded to do the right thing when no-one is looking. 2 BOYS AND GIRLS CLUB OF DURHAM (After School Program) Location: Carruthers Creek P.S. (Room 101) Grades 1 8 (ages 6-12) 3:45 6:30 pm everyday Recreational Program includes: Homework help Active gym games Crafts Daily healthy snack provided. WINTER/HOLIDAY CELEBRATION CONCERTS Please join our FDK students for the Winter Celebration on Thursday, December 14th at 6:30 pm in the gymnasium. They will be performing a variety of musical pieces to put you in the festive spirit! Our grades 1-8 students will be performing a variety of entertaining acts the following week, on Thursday, December 21st at 6:30 pm. Come see the Bell Choir, Chorus, Band and a variety of primary and junior classes showing off their musical talents at our Winter Celebration. See you there! KISS & RIDE We continue to ask for your support in ensuring that our students and families are safe and Kiss & Ride routines are followed. Our parking lot is a very busy place at the beginning and end of the day. Please do not park in our Kiss and Ride areas or where cones have been placed to ensure that buses and other vehicles have enough space to get by. If your child is not waiting, please continue to drive through so that other cars are not blocked. Thank you very much.

3 ECO TEAM MEMBERS ATTEND ECO SUMMIT Grade 6 Eco Team members, Maya and Caleigh attended the Durham District School Board s Eco Summit on November 24th. The Eco Summit took place at the Board Office and representatives from many other schools Eco Teams were there to share their best practices. We went to learn about what other schools are doing to help the earth. First, we got to look around and see examples of different school s Eco work. We listened to a First Nations woman who sang a song for us. We were also able to participate in a variety of activities there. In the boardroom, we listened to the Keynote Speaker, Toby Thorne who taught us about bat education. We also were given time as a team to plan our Eco ideas for the rest of this school year. We are excited to share that we now have a lot of new ideas for our Eco Club. In fact, we are planning to do an Eco Jeopardy game, so stay tuned for more information in Maya & Caleigh, Eco Team Members JR. GIRL S VOLLEYBALL

4 GIRLS ROBOTICS This year, the Girls Robotics Club has seen the most number of girls interested in STEM education. More than 30 girls learned how to program and build the Mindstorms EV3 robot as they prepared for the 2nd annual Girls Robotics competition on November 30th. Girls from William Dunbar PS joined us for this exciting event. These girls have demonstrated their science, technology, engineering and mathematics knowledge and skills as they competed this year. Congratulations to all the girls who participated and especially, the girls who came in 1st, 2nd and 3rd. The tie-breaker challenges were an exciting finish to the evening. Thank-you to Mr. Cha and Mrs. Matys for supervising this club and event. Thank-you to the SCC for their support in building up the Robotics club. SCHOOL CLIMATE SURVEY Every two years, each school in the Durham District School Board is asked to gather data on how safe and accepted students feel at their school. This data is then utilized by our Safe and Accepting School Teams at all levels in order to plan future initiatives in the area of safety and developing positive school climates. All students in Grades 4 8, staff and parents are invited and eligible to participate. This year is a survey year. Computers will be available in our library on the nights of our Holiday Concerts (December 14 th and 21 st ). COLDER WEATHER & SAFETY Please remember as the days get cooler, children need to be dressed warmly for outdoor activity. Mittens & hats will be required soon. The children will be outside for two 10 minute recesses and a 40 minute break at lunch. Warm clothing is necessary for the children to enjoy their recess time. Please label all your children s clothes so that if they are misplaced, they may be returned.
