3 St. Mary s County Recreation & Parks FY 0 Youth Sports Participation and Facility Use SUMMARY Youth sports participation and facility use statistics are vital when addressing needs for park land acquisition, development, and facility usage. This information is necessary for both short and long term requirements. Included in the FY 0 Youth Sports Participation and Facility Use Report are participation and facility use statistics for Recreation & Parks sponsored and volunteer youth sports leagues. Facility use needs and recommendations provided by Recreation & Parks staff are also included in the report. The Department sponsors a youth basketball league, which operates in various public schools, as well as indoor soccer, roller hockey, field hockey, and lacrosse leagues at the Leonard Hall Recreation Center. These programs are funded through fees and charges and operate from the Departments Activity Fund Budget. Listed below are the leagues and the general areas of the county they operate in. St. Mary s Lacrosse (County Wide) OTHER St. Mary s Wrestling Club (County Wide) Sunday Youth Basketball League Volunteer Youth Sport Leagues with the Department of Recreation & Parks, through a written and signed league agreement are administered by volunteer boards, which involve more than,000 youth participating on over 80 teams. Funding for these leagues is provided through registration fees, fundraisers, and sponsorships. The leagues are responsible for all financial operations and administer their funds through league bank accounts. The Department assists the leagues by providing safe playing fields, game and practice scheduling and coaches training and certification. 3

GROWTH BABE RUTH 6 of 9 60' fields are fully utilized with three or more teams. Only using the Country Lakes fields for practice purposes. out of 3 90' fields are fully utilized with three or more teams. ST. MARY S YOUTH T-BALL ORGANIZATION All fields are fully utilized with two or more teams on each. Fields are mostly private and public school fields. Need more mid county fields AMERICAN LITTLE LEAGUE Need additional practice space Mid County area NATIONAL LITTLE LEAGUE Requesting lighted field at either Cecil or Lancaster AMERICAN LEGION BASEBALL Participated in the Junior Division CHALLENGES/ISSUES/CONSIDERATIONS Alternative uses for the 90 ft field at 5th District Park due to lack of use. RECOMMENDATIONS ) Four additional 60' fields are needed in the Hollywood area due to the loss of fields at St. Johns. ) Need much more additional space in the central area of the county. 3) Need more 50<70 fields 5

There are currently three leagues (Patuxent River Raiders, Leonardtown Wildcats and Mechanicsville Braves). Two of these programs offer Spring Flag as well as Fall Tackle programs. RECOMMENDATIONS Mid County practice areas are needed. An additional full size multipurpose field in the mid county area would be of great benefit to Youth Football as well as Soccer and Lacrosse. CHALLENGES/ISSUES.) Need more lit practice spaces.) Need additional practice space to minimize the usage on private fields to allow for better monitoring of maintenance needs. 7

Youth Total GROWTH Boys Lacrosse is able to hold all practices and games at Lancaster Park. Girls Lacrosse is spread through various practice areas in the county. Currently their younger age groups play on Saturdays at the CSM Leonardtown Campus. This location may soon become unavailable to them due to building expansion. We will need to work on a centralized location to hold their games when this location is lost. RECOMMENDATIONS Use some of our lesser used parks for practices/games. CHALLENGES/ISSUES Have park area but must be developed for usage. 8

CHALLENGES/ISSUES The county s Land Preservation Park and Recreation Plan has identified the need for indoor facilities for roller hockey, basketball, volleyball etc.. The Nicolet Park master plan includes an outdoor Roller Hockey rink as a possible future facility. 9
