2 Canon Slade School A welcome from the Head Thank you for considering applying for a post at Canon Slade School. Our school has a long and distinguished history, originally founded in 1855 by the then Vicar of Bolton, Canon James Slade. Over those one and a half centuries the school has served families throughout Bolton and much farther afield in providing an outstanding education set firmly within a strong Christian ethos. Though our school has changed much since its inception our motto "Ora et labora" (Pray and Work) is still our guiding principle. It is this commitment to work and the Christian life that ensures the success of the school and our ability to flourish in a constantly changing and challenging world. A visit to our magnificent chapel, completed in 2004, bears witness to the centrality of our Christian faith. Every member of our community is involved in an act of Christian worship each day and everyone is expected to do their best in every aspect of their work. Our Christian values of compassion and love for one another allow each individual to grow in a safe, caring community which has high expectations for all. Our facilities and the breadth of opportunities offered to young people are outstanding. The quality of teaching and learning, academic results, pastoral care, extra curricular opportunities and Christian nurture at Canon Slade School stand amongst the best of the nation s state schools. Our school is a friendly, vibrant and exciting place in which every member of our school community is recognised and valued for the individual they are, made in the image of God, and where each is given every opportunity to fulfil their potential. There are around 1700 pupils and students on roll, including some 340 in the Sixth Form. It has a well deserved reputation not only for its outstanding academic work but also for Drama, Music, Sport, (Sportsmark Award and regular success in national competitions), and many other activities. We are a Specialist Arts College (holding Artsmark Gold status), a Training School and enjoy Healthy School and Leading Edge status. Since 2004 we have been an Ambassador School for the National Academy of Gifted and Talented Youth. Since May 2008 the school has been designated a High Performing Specialist College and also became one of the nation s first Teacher Learning Academy Lead Schools. Canon Slade School is set on a beautiful 57 acre site in the foothills of the West Pennine moors. We enjoy splendid views and have hundreds of mature trees, a river bank, two wildlife ponds, one of which is inhabited by several endangered species of amphibian. 4 PHYSICAL EDUCATION DEPARTMENT In a departmental Ofsted inspection in January 2009, Canon Slade s PE Department was awarded outstanding overall: Achievement is outstanding overall and students reach very high standards. The department offers its students a very comprehensive programme of Extra Curricular Activities and Interform Activities. The school s sports teams regularly compete right up to national level in seven sports: Athletics Basketball Biathlon Cross Country Football Swimming Tennis Cheerleading The school has been National Champions in basketball, biathlon, cross country and tennis. The school regularly hosts national events. The department regularly delivers excellent results at both GCSE and A Level. Summer 2009 saw GCSE results of 89% at A* C. Our AS and A2 performance scores are in the top 25% of the country and have been for the last six years. Our PE facilities have been expanded during 2011 and the department now boasts new changing facilities and staff offices as well as a new fitness suite. This is in addition to: Sports Hall (4 badminton courts) Gymnasium with a range of gymnastic equipment including 2 trampolines Outdoor tarmac area (5 tennis courts & 4 netball courts) All weather area 16m swimming pool Extensive fields (natural cross country course, 4 football pitches, 4 hockey pitches/athletic area, 1 cricket square, long and triple jump facilities and numerous rounders pitches) The Good Schools Guide states that Canon Slade School offers Best Value Added Results in Sport/PE Studies at any English School.
