PETER SCHOOL 120 Mayfair Road Warwick, Rhode Island (401) stpeterschoolri.com January 30, 2014 Dear Parents, Thank you to all who attended and participated in our Catholic Schools Week Liturgy on Sunday. It is so beautiful to see all our students with their parents in attendance at Liturgy. We had a very successful Open House on Sunday. Visitors were impressed with our student tour guides who were so poised and respectful as they escorted new families through the school. Thank you to the many volunteers who make that day so successful; to the faculty and Mrs. Rossi for giving up their Sunday and Bethany Mascena Tracy who coordinated our Open House so well! SCIENCE FAIR WINNERS: Our in-school Science Fair projects were judged yesterday. All of the students did an excellent job with their projects. The winners were as follows: Fifth Place and Alternate for State competition Gianni Martira How much does weight and height affect speed? Fourth Place Kara Quinn Third Place Matthew Smith Second Place Madeline Hopkins Does the lunar cycle affect people s moods? Ferrofluids Catch me if you can. Does cell phone use affect reaction time? First Place Nanci Campopiano Testing 22 cal. Ammunition Although Nanci has been target shooting for two years and conducted all of her research under close supervision at a target range, it was obvious that she invested sustained and focused effort on this project. She should be commended for her commitment to her science research.

2 Please come out and support our St. Peter School projects at CCRI Warwick on March 16 th from noon to 3:00 PM. You will be able to view project from middle and high school students throughout the State. This is a great way to get ideas for your own project next year! CATHOLIC SCHOOLS WEEK: We began Catholic Schools Week on Monday with Opening Ceremonies. Each class was introduced and displayed the colors of the country they represented. Preschool represented the US; Kindergarten, Switzerland; Grade 1, Norway; Grade 2, Italy; Grade 3, Poland; Grade 4, Japan; Grade 5, Great Britain; Grade 6, Israel; Grade 7, Mexico; and Grade 8, France. Each day the students competed in Olympic Games including the javelin straw throw, the paper bag hammer throw, the computer mouse pad relay and the paper plate discus throw. Look for pictures of many of our events during CSW on the St. Peter Facebook page. GRANDPARENTS DAY: Grandparents Day was a huge success! It was heartwarming to see so many grandparents/great grandparents and special friends enjoying a visit to the classrooms to see the children. Many of the visiting grandparents were renewing friendships and reminiscing with each other about the years that they were the parents of St. Peter students! Students in grades Preschool 3 through Grade 3, and many grandparents and special friends, went over to the lower church for a reading of Schmitty, The Weather Dog, by the author and St. Peter School alumna, Elly McGuire, plus a weather lesson by Meteorologist Ron Trotta and Schmitty The Weather Dog, himself. Last but not least, we thank the grandparents and special visitors for attending our Scholastic Book Fair and purchasing books for the children. The children love the books and we appreciate your support. We look forward to seeing all of you again next year! LAST CHANCE TO ORDER SCHMITTY THE WEATHER DOG:DAYDREAM BY ELLY McGUIRE: If anyone is interested in purchasing a copy of the book that was read to the children at the presentation on Wednesday, you must place your order by Monday, February 3rd. Additional order forms were sent home with the children on Thursday. Mr. Trotta will deliver the books to the school. He and Ms. McGuire are only here in Rhode Island for a week. RIMLE WINTER CONFERENCE: Mrs. Unger and Mrs. Der Manouelian attended the Rhode Island Middle School conference last Saturday. It was an informative day for them and a lucky one. Both won something at the conference! Mrs. Unger won a complete set of Explorations in Core Math which may supplement present instruction in grade 6. GEOGRAPHY BEE: Our in school Geography Bee took place last Thursday, January 23rd. We congratulate our winner, Michael Kelley, Grade 8. Michael will go on to the Regional Bee after taking a written test. Thank you to all the participants of the Geography Bee: Cailee Lavoie and Sean Fey Mongeau, grade 5; Adam Ferrara and Sophia Hopkins, grade 6; Emily Goff and Celeste Hadley, grade 7; Gianni Martira and Michael Kelley, grade 8. REGIONAL SPELLING BEE: The Regional Spelling Bee took place on Wednesday, January 29th at St. Mary s School in Cranston. Marissa Birmingham and Gianni Martira represented St. Peter School very well. This year the words used in the spelling bee were extremely difficult, even the first round! Many of the words used were unfamiliar to both Mrs. Oliveira and me. Despite the difficulty, Gianni and Marissa made us proud!

3 TARDINESS: Many of our students, young and old, drift into school late. We have many students arriving as late as 9:45 AM. All students should be in the school yard at the first bell which rings at 8:45 AM. Morning Prayer takes place at 8:55 AM in order for classes to begin promptly at 9:00 AM. It is very disrespectful to the teacher and the rest of the class to have students arriving during instruction time. Beginning Monday, February 3 rd, detention slips will be issued to students who arrive late. If you have an early doctor or dental appointment, please bring a note from the doctor or dentist office. BIG RAFFLE TICKETS: Please continue to sell and return your Big Raffle Tickets to school. The drawing will take place at our Adult Social on March 8, UPCOMING EVENT: Many of our School Guild parents have been requesting that we have an adult social event. With the help of Michael D Eletto, we have arranged a dinner at the Providence Biltmore Hotel on March 8, Valet parking will be provided free of charge and a block of rooms are being reserved for us at a reasonable rate if you would like to stay overnight. Please mark your calendar and join us that evening for food, music and camaraderie. The winners of our Big Raffle will also be drawn that evening! We will send home your invitations within the next few weeks. I hope to see many of our school parents there. ST. PETER BOYS BASKETBALL TEAM: The St. Peter Boys basketball team s next game will take place on Saturday, February 1 st at 1:00 PM. Our boys will play St. Joseph White at St. Joseph School. Good Luck, guys! VOLLEYBALL: We have a coach and an assistant coach for a volleyball team. We are in need of a place to practice. If you know of a place, please call the office SOCCER: If any parent is interested in coaching a soccer team in the spring, please call the office as soon as possible. Coaches must be certified by CAL. A+ SCHOOL REWARD: Sign your reward card up with Stop & Shop s A+School Rewards and our school could be awarded a visit from a Patriot Player.
