4 INTRODUCTION Thank you for your interest in St Benedict s School. St Benedict s is a Catholic Benedictine School offering co-education from St Benedict s School is committed to providing an environment which values and includes all pupils, staff, parents and visitors regardless of their educational, physical, sensory, social, spiritual, emotional and cultural needs. It is further committed to challenging attitudes about disability and accessibility and to developing a culture of awareness, tolerance and inclusion. Where it is practicable to make reasonable adjustments to enable a prospective pupil to take up a place at the School and to satisfy the current admissions criteria, the School is committed to providing those reasonable adjustments. Further details are available in the St Benedict s Accessibility Plan available on request. 4

5 ADMISSION TO THE JUNIOR SCHOOL Boys and girls are admitted to the Junior School with an expectation that they will transfer to the Senior School at 11+. Admission to the Nursery at 3+ Children are eligible to join the Nursery aged 3 years and 3 months. In order to assess readiness for entry into the Nursery, children are observed during a short play session. Admission into the Nursery does not guarantee a place in the Pre-Preparatory department, however the expectation is that in most instances this will be the case. There is a maximum of 35 places in the Nursery. Admission to Pre-Prep 1 (Reception) The main intake of children is into Pre-Prep 1 (Reception) at 4+ when assessment is more formal. We offer 2 classes in each year group, with an optimum class size of 18 children and a maximum of 20. The assessments for entry in September 2018 will take place during the course of November The closing date for registration is Friday, 3 November Using the School s criteria for admission, children are observed in a classroom situation and asked to carry out certain tasks individually and in small groups. Prospective parents will have the opportunity to meet the Junior School Headmaster and undertake a guided tour of the Junior School. The offer of a place is subject to the successful outcome of the assessment morning and a parental interview with the Junior School Headmaster. Admission to the Junior Department (Years 3 6) There is a smaller intake of children at 7+ for entry to Lower Prep (Year 3), when assessment is more formal, and at other times for occasional entry, if places are available. In the Junior department there are up to 3 classes per year group, with a maximum of 24 in each class. The assessment for entry in September 2018 will take place on during the course of February The closing date for registration is Friday, 12 January Children seeking admission to the Junior department attend a full school day during which they are assessed in literacy, numeracy and verbal reasoning; they are also observed in various social and classroom situations to ensure that they will integrate well with their year group. We aim to select boys and girls who are academically of above national average ability. 5

6 ADMISSION TO THE SENIOR SCHOOL 11+ Entry All children must register and sit the School s 11+ entrance examination. Some children who sit the entrance examination will be invited to interview. The interview will be an integral part of the assessment as will a reference from the boy s or girl s primary, junior or preparatory school. The interview will be conducted by the Headmaster or a Deputy Head and will last approximately 10 minutes. Its purpose is to provide a friendly atmosphere in which the candidate will have the chance to give an indication of his or her interests and abilities. It will also enable the interviewer to look further into the candidate s performance in the entrance examination and to ascertain what contribution he or she might make to the general life of the School. The Headmaster will finalise the list of candidates who will be eligible for further consideration for admission. In the case of pupils joining Year 9 (and subject to availability of resources) this class may be specifically designed for beginners in the subject. This class would follow an accelerated course aimed at allowing potential progression to GCSE at the beginning of Year 10.
