VIS WEEKLY NEWS&ANNOUNCEMENTS Tuesday, Oct. 15 th, 2013 Spread the word about our Upcoming Open Houses! Our peak enrolment season is about to begin! Because we don t advertise, we depend on our community to spread the word about the work that we do here at VIS. Last year, we had a terrific response to our request for support in building our enrolment, which has resulted in a huge increase in applications and population. Thanks to all our families who served as informal ambassadors for the school. Tomorrow, October 16 th, we ll be holding our first Open House for prospective families, from 10:30 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. There will be more Open Houses throughout the school year. Word of mouth from our families is the way we prefer to promote our school. Please feel free to invite anyone you think might be interested in hearing more about VIS. We are planning to expand to Grade 2 next year, so families with younger children may be interested. Thank you in advance for your help! We can t do it without you.
Fall Trips 2013 Gr. 7 & 8 New York Trip This year the school trip for the Intermediate grades to New York City was a huge success. Students participated in a diverse array of learning opportunities that included historical landmarks and museums. Night events such as the tour of the Rockefellar Center and Time Square made for an exciting and fun-filled evening. We also had the chance to ride on the popular New York subway system and take-in some of New York's fine dining. We were all able to learn about, and develop an appreciation for New York s distinct culture while touring. This trip would not have been possible if not for the support of VIS families, the enthusiasm of VIS students and the efforts of VIS Staff and parent chaperon, Warren Kinsella. Thank you!
Important Dates Upcoming Sports Events
Gr. 5 & 6 Kingston Trip The grade 5/6 class enjoyed an engaging trip to Kingston filled with fun and sunshine. We took full advantage of the beautiful weather to explore Arrowhead Beach Park, Confederation Park and City Hall, as well as to practice our navigational skills and enjoy the local farmer s market on a shopping excursion. During our tour of City Hall, our students deepened their historical knowledge and critical thinking skills. Other highlights included a lunch cruise around the 1000 Islands and a fun dinner out at our favourite Kingston restaurant- Chez Piggy! It was a wonderful chance to enrich our learning, to appreciate the joys of travelling and, of course, to bond and have a ton of fun!!

Gr. 3/4 Urban Adventures in Toronto The grade 3/4 s enjoyed numerous adventures in and outside of the school while the grade 5-8 s were out of town. On Wednesday, we watched Dr. Seuss The Lorax and discussed the interconnectedness of plants, water, air, and humans. We talked about the impact that humans can have on plants and in turn, the responsibility we have to protect our symbiotic relationship with our air-sharing buddies! On Thursday, students explored the rainforest and Science arcade in the Ontario Science Centre and viewed a heart-warming IMAX film about orphaned orangutans in Borneo and elephants in Kenya. On our last day, the 3/4 s were super navigators and historians as they learned about the history of the Town of York, while also utilizing their knowledge of intermediate and cardinal directions to find the St. Lawrence Market. All in all, the trips were filled with lots of learning opportunities, interactive activities and a chance for classmates to bond and have loads of hair-raising fun! A special thanks to Lorraine Spekkens for helping out at the Ontario Science Centre.
Your Donations at Work! This year, your donations at VIS have been used primarily to purchase crucial technology for the school. One of our recent acquisitions is a Smart Board for Mr. Milroy s room. We now have Smart Boards in all classrooms on the Intermediate (main) floor. We re hoping to purchase two more for our primary/junior floor this year, with your help. As a result of your generous donations to the VIS Association, we've been able to purchase the components of a sophisticated computer lab to replace the older computers currently in the library. In addition, Jeff MacIsaac (Ms. MacIsaac's brother) has volunteered a significant amount of time and expertise to build the computers and set up the lab for us; because of this, we have been able to purchase the component parts of much higher end computers than we would be able to afford if we were purchasing them whole. The components of the new lab have been purchased and should all have arrived by next week. Jeff will be setting up the lab over the next month or two, and hopefully it should be operational by the end of this term at the latest. A big thanks to you, our parent community, and to Jeff! A message from Jeff MacIsaac our IT architect: Our new Voice Lab will provide students with a modern, robust, powerful and totally open-source, GNU/Linux computational environment in which to learn introductory computer science, explore online resources to augment the Ontario curriculum, and, most importantly engage in self-directed work beneath the common glossy surface of computers, to discover their own capacity for creativity in the kind of plastic
VIS Student Council Elections On Friday, October 11 th, VIS participated in the election process by voting to determine who would be their new student council for this school year. Many students hung posters around the school and all candidates presented very eloquent speeches to the entire school. All candidates ran with integrity and shared amazing ideas for school events and activities this year. Congratulations! Your Intermediate and Primary/Junior Student Council for is: Liv Woodward-Smith (President Intermediate) James Kane (Vice-President Intermediate) Chloe Fine (Treasurer Intermediate) Rhys Fulton-Doyle (Secretary Intermediate) Hunter Milroy (Grade 8 Class Rep Intermediate) Hannah Carling (Grade 7 Class Rep Intermediate) Mika Halinski (President Primary/Junior) Rhys Mroueh (Vice-President Primary/Junior) Jake Whitla (Grade 6 Class Rep Primary/Junior) Harlan Hutt (Grade 5 Class Rep Primary/Junior) Zachary Bellemore (Grade 3/4 Class Rep Primary/Junior)
OISE Lesson Study VIS hosted the 2nd annual OISE Lesson Study on Thursday of last week. This year, we're hosting two full afternoons of Lesson Study, one for the Junior-Intermediate cohort and one for the Primary/Junior cohort. Organized by Dr. Susan Schwartz, OISE Professor and long-time supporter of our school, the Master of Teaching students work in groups to prepare an afternoon of teaching; one or two of the students present the lesson to groups of our students, while the other students and the VIS teachers record their observations. Following the lesson, there's a debriefing to discuss the strengths and challenges of the lesson and its implementation. We're always happy and honoured to give Teacher Candidates from University of Toronto and York the opportunity to visit, teach and learn from our amazing students. Reminder - Contact, Message, and Cellphone Policy Just a reminder to our families that we do not allow students to text or make calls on their cellphones during school hours. Students are occasionally allowed to use their cellphones as cameras, recording devices, or personal music players, at the discretion of a teacher, but they need specific permission. If they use a cellphone inside the school, that phone will be taken away and held in the office until the end of the day. There is a telephone for student use in the office, which can be used to call home, with permission. This policy extends to our school bus, so please remind your child that they are to use cellphones for emergency calls only on the bus. As well, please remember that Ms. James and Ms. Day are very busy in the office and are not able to pass on non-emergency messages to children. We appreciate your support in these areas.
Homework Policy At VIS, we believe that homework should only be assigned in two subjects: English and Math. Occasionally, your child may need to practice for music, dance, or theatre, as well. All other work is to be completed in class or during study periods at school. All creative work, particularly collaborative projects, should be done at school during class time as well. If you find that your child is bringing home large amounts of work in subjects other than English or Math, please contact his or her teachers to talk about this. As well, if your child is ill, we do not send packages of homework to him/her with classmates or friends. Instead, students are encouraged to follow up with teachers on their return to school and discuss which work should be prioritized. Please note that students are responsible for all work assigned during absences due to sports or family vacations. If you plan to remove your child from school for more than a day or two, please contact his/her homeroom teacher to alert us so that we can encourage your child to be pro-active prior to the absence. Sports Participation Policy At VIS, students who want to participate in extra-curricular sports (basketball, volleyball, badminton, hockey, etc.) must demonstrate satisfactory academic achievement and responsibility. At the end of each week, teachers will determine which students are falling behind on assignments, coming to class unprepared, and failing to meet the academic standards of the school. Those students will not be allowed to participate in extra-curricular sports until they submit all overdue assignments and show satisfactory academic achievement. If you have any questions about the list, please feel free to contact Ms. MacIsaac.
