1 Lincoln Middle School Showcase May 19, 2017 It has been a very exciting and busy time in the past several weeks at Lincoln Middle School! Now, as we prepare for the final stretch of the school year, there are many celebratory events upcoming such as the NJHS event, 8th Grade Celebration, and the 8 th Grade Social to watch for! Academics: LMS National Junior Honor Society Induction! Thank you to advisors Kristen Lowe and Barbara Marsden as well as Mrs. Carol Fishburn who assisted, for all of their hard work with and support of the NJHS inductees! Mrs. Lowe stated: LMS inducted 86 students into the National Junior Honor Society on Tuesday, May 16,2017. The evening was a wonderful event. The students watched a video that showcased all of the candidates with baby picture and their 8th grade school picture. It was wonderful to see how much they have grown! Skyler Bragg, an inductee, did a fabulous job playing the piano and singing the National Anthem. School Committee Chair Kristine Donabedian, Superintendent Georgia Fortunato, and Principal Heidi Godowski offered the inductees congratulations and some encouraging words for the future. NJHS President Dylan Balon, Vice President Solomen Nguyen, Secretary Jacob Jawharjian, Treasure Marc Leonetti, and At-large Officers Olivia Mendes and Edward Foster, lead us in the candle lighting ceremony which honors the 5 pillars of the National Junior Honor Society. Those pillars are: Scholarship, Leadership, Character, Citizenship, and Service. Finally, the 86 candidates said their pledge and received their certificates from Superintendent Fortunato. Congratulations to all inductees and their families on a job well done.

2 NJHS Pictures compliments of Kristen Lowe Students Through the Art of Storytelling Distinguished English Professor and African Storyteller, Dr. Mama Visited Lincoln Middle School to Promote Cultural Diversity and Awareness Through Storytelling through a presentation for the 7 th grade students on Wednesday, May 17 th. Through the efforts of English teacher, Kileen Gilroy and a school-wide initiative to promote and integrate cultural diversity and awareness, we have asked story-teller and Eastern Connecticut State University professor, Dr. Raouf Mama, to visit LMS and perform his African and multicultural way of blending stories with poetry, music, and dance. A published author of two children s books, one which was recognized as the best children s book of the year by The Bank Street School, he continuously works at the university level and with students and teachers all over the world, frequently traveling to his hometown of Benin, Africa. His professional accomplishments exceed these credentials, and perhaps most notably, he is a man of great intellect and compassion, volunteering his time to work with UNICEF, the Peace Corps, and visiting the Lincoln district/community for the third time. The overarching purpose of this event was to establish a positive culture and community within our school and in our district, we believe in providing learning opportunities and experiences for all students that address, identity, diversity and acceptance. We believe in instilling these values during a child s developmental years to ensure that our students will mature to be active, empathetic and compassionate leaders and citizens.

3 Storytelling Presentation Pictures: Band and Chorus Performances: Thank you to Mr. Casale and Mrs. Birrell for the amazing spring 6 th and 7 th grade Band Concerts, Jazz and Advanced Band Concerts and the 6 th /7 th and the 7 th and 8 th Spring Chorus Concerts performed this month! The students were outstanding! The hard work and dedication put into the concerts was evident. Several pictures were Tweeted the day of the performances be sure to join the LMS Twitter thread if you have not done so already! The LMS band students are off to compete in the Trills and Thrills competition while the LMS chorus students are competing at the Great East Festival today (May 19, 2017) followed by a day at Six Flags NE! All out best to the band and chorus! Science Olympiad: Academically at LMS students have been hard at work in the many clubs offered. One such club is the LMS Science Olympiad, led by LMS science teacher Mrs. Cathleen Carlson, which competed at Rhode Island College in several categories in April. It is through Mrs. Carlson s efforts, and the knowledge she shared with the students throughout the year that makes her an inspiration. We are so proud of all of the LMS Science Olympiads for all of your hard work, dedication and participation in the statewide competition!

4 Social: PBIS Shout Out Club: The PBIS Shout Out Club has been hard at work flooding the hallways with positive messages through their phantom Sticky Note events! The PBIS Shout out club is a new club formed by John Ryan, 6 th grade SS teacher, Celeste Canham, Speech and Language Pathologist, and students in the school providing student voice to the culture and climate of the building. The recipients of the Sticky Note event, including the main office staff, has been positive, uplifting setting the tone for the school. Many of the positive messages still adorn the walls of the main office as a positive daily reminder. Thank you to the Shout Out club for your positive messages and the work that you do. Coming soon the Roaring Board a roving board that will feature the exceptional work of our students compliments of a PACT grant! This upcoming week will feature a Sprit Week as posted on the LMS announcements to coincide with the LMS canned food drive. Crystal Apple Recipient: Congratulations to Mr. John Ryan!! 5 Drama Production: The LMS Drama club led by Drama Advisor Nicholas Granatino, performed their creative rendition of Little Shop of Horrors to a very well attended audience on April 27 th. The students did a great job! Attached are some pictures from the performance: Little Shop of Horrors : Special Event Note: Thank you to Amy Delfarno, special education teacher, for her wonderful efforts in putting together an LMS Dare to Be Different team for the Autism Project s Imagine Walk that was held Sunday, April 30 th at Goddard Park. Through her efforts, her team of students, teachers and parents raised over $ for the Autism Project!

6 Athletics: Athletically, the student at LMS shine! We are grateful for all of the hard work of our wonderful spring coaching staff for girls softball, boys baseball, track/field AND Unified Sports. Thank you to the 6 th grade students, parents, teachers and staff team for being Fans in the Stands to support the Unified Sports Basketball game in the recent home game on April 27th! Thank you to Coach Bedrossian, Assistant Coaches Morris and Hayter, and to the partners and athletes of the Unified Sports team for all of your hard work and support of each other to make the Unified Sports program a highlight of LMS! Here are some highlights from the coaches: Unified Home Game: Boys Baseball: Coach Kelly States: The LMS boys baseball team currently has a record of 7-3. The team of 21 boys have worked hard all year at practices and games. They are hoping to enter the Boys Baseball state tournament at the beginning of June. The team has been fortunate to get great performances from many different players as the season has moved on. The team has some great 8 th grade leaders and some underclassmen who have played well all season.

7 Track/Field: Coach Noel States: The boys and girls both won the Division Track Meet! They are off to the State Championship today (Friday, May 19 th )! Best of luck to all of the track and field athletes participating! Girls Softball coached by Coach Conti: The girls have a great season and are wonderful team mates.
