1 Dear Parents and Carers, As ever it s been an incredibly busy half term. One of the big highlights has been the Christmas Fair. A tremendous amount of work goes into this festive event and as ever the PTA did a marvellous job. Thanks to everyone involved for all the hard work and also for the generous donations. One of the projects that the PTA is part funding is to develop the outside area. The school is working with three companies to plan an exciting, natural area for play and the school council have been involved with contributing ideas. Another way we are planning to make the school environment even better is by growing fruit and vegetables. Tony is attending a weekly gardening course on Mondays and the PTA are kindly funding a new greenhouse. Tony has some horseradish growing in his shed and is planting some rainbow beetroot. We are also planting wisteria, ginko, tulips and a fig tree and have a new gardener to help improve the outdoor area. There have been so many exciting projects. Two notable ones have been the Singing Project which culminated in a stunning performance by Years 3 and 4 this term. Also we have had an art project with Tim Davies where children from across the school have made a beautiful installation for the reception area. School league tables were out last week. At Sheringdale we nurture the whole child and have a strong creative tradition. Academically standards are also excellent and it is a testament to the hard work and dedication of the children, staff and families that we rank third in the local authority out of 67 schools for outcomes in reading, writing and maths at Key Stage 2. 2 0 Anthony Peebles Piano Recital On 3rd November Antony Peebles gave a short piano recital to the children in the school hall. Antony is a local resident and an old friend of a former governor of Sheringdale. He has now given the school several recitals and he explains to the children how the music he plays came to be written. It is clear from the children's reactions to his playing that they realise he is a world famous performer and that they hugely enjoy the music he plays. On this occasion he explained how composers like Chopin and Scriabin used exercises of scales and arpeggios to construct Etudes, hence we heard some etudes based on these formats but containing great tunes e.g. Chopins revolutionary study. Each class from Year 1 to Year 5 got the opportunity to visit the market and spend their money.

3 Maths day! On Monday 12th December Sheringdale enjoyed another fun-filled and active maths day. A highlight was the visit from the Happy Puzzle Company who brought a new challenge to the school: the Brain Busters! The children worked brilliantly in teams to solve increasingly difficult puzzles, using their skills of teamwork, communication and perseverance. Thank you to the PTA for their on-going support for maths enrichment event days such as this! Last week, on Friday, Year 6 had a spelling and multiplication bee. Who knew it could bee so intense? We had three rounds in each bee. In the spelling bee the first round we were provided with: a whiteboard, a pencil and a piece of paper. We were asked 20 questions and we had to spell them. We had 12 people in round 2. They had spellings on the board behind them and they had to answer them. We then got cut down to five finalists: Tom Franklin, Aryan Jit Singh, Patrik Nikolov, Matilda Adams and Grace Stimpson! We had to spell words some of us never heard of before. The second word was acoustic and all three boys were eliminated! Finally, it was a spell-off between the lovely friends, Matilda and Grace. The last word was awkward Grace Stimpson won! In the multiplication bee, we were asked a variety of times table questions and division facts. Amazingly, we had a whopping 23 finalists, and anybody could ve won. Almost everybody reached the third round. But, at the end, our top four finalists were: Aryan Jit Singh, Matilda Adams, Shiv Bhari and our winner, Ben Naylor! It was very intense, but we found our winners! Congratulations to Grace and Ben for winning the spelling and multiplication bees. You are both the bees-knees! 4 Cricket at the Oval The Cricket team played brilliantly on 5th December. They won 4 out of 4 matches and will play in the finals in January. A polite reminder not to bring toys into school as they may get lost or broken. Thank you. Year 6 Mixed Tag Rugby League by Mr. Rickner On a mild November day, a year 6 team ventured down to King George s Park for the annual mixed tag rugby tournament. In a team consisting of Matilda Adams, Grace Elliott, Tom Franklin (Captain), Aryan Jit Singh, Niki Konig (Vice-Captain), Jacob Rowe, Iain Stevenson, Grace Turner and Milly Wright, confidence was high given the quality of the team. It was a large tournament: four groups each consisting of eight teams. The team played fantastically and with three wins and three draws we had placed ourselves firmly in the top three. In fact, there was only two points separating first and third, compared to four points between third and fourth, testament to the competitiveness of our group. Unfortunately, Sheringdale finished in third, Penwortham (4 wins, 1 loss, 1 draw) second and Holy Ghost (4 wins, 2 draws) first. Despite the result, the team spirit and effort shown was commendable and it made me very proud to be associated with the team as their coach. Long live the Sheringdale invincibles! We raised a whopping for Children in Need. Thank you everyone for your support. Years 3 and 4 Singing Project Cluster Concert with All Farthing School Lost Property The lost property bag is kept just outside the office in the school reception. Please have a look through when you are next in school. All items left over the holidays will go to the local charity shop. Please ensure that all your children s clothes are named so they can be returned to them if they go missing.

5 The Christmas Fair The Christmas Fair was a wonderful success raising a fantastic 3,732. Along with John D Wood s sponsorship of 2,400, our fundraising total for the Fair came to 6,132. We are still awaiting the final numbers for our other fundraising activities including the Christmas trees, cards, puddings, wrapping paper and Santa s letters. We look forward to letting you know how much we raised from these in the New Year. A huge Thank You to everyone who helped and Supported the fair! Year 5 has a great time hosting their International Travel Café on 16 th December.
