1 Junior School Headmistress Report The school year was a very memorable year in the history of the School. It marked the first year of operation in the redeveloped Jordan Road Campus. The transition to the new premises was smooth, allowing teaching and learning to be continued effectively. All major activities at the beginning of the school year were not affected by the relocating process. On top of the regular school schedule was the different logistics planning for the new environment. The School worked out specific dates for each primary level to attend school at the new campus on the first two days in September, The School provided different opportunities for staff members, parents and students to familiarise themselves with the new school environment. The timetables of the Junior School and the Senior School were meticulously planned to ensure that students school life and classroom routines were not affected, especially when the swimming pool, sports field and the lifts were commonly used. The centralised office was established to provide the School with facility management monitored by different administrative and technical staff. The excitement of the entire school rose to great heights as we explored the brand new campus together. The Senior and Junior Schools reunited again at the Jordan Road Campus to experience a mixed novel and nostalgic feeling. The girls old favourite places, such as the Middle Garden, the playground with swings, and the reading castle are still present, but have been given a new look. The new Middle Garden is now vertically located in the middle of the school building. In addition to the beautiful landscaping, the playground equipment of the former Corner Garden can now be found in the contemporary Middle Garden. The Environmental and Gardening Club has turned the Middle Garden into their harvest backyard. Club members aspire to instill green values and promote green practices to their fellow schoolmates. They also play a vital role in greening and beautifying the campus. Potted plants and hanging pots of herbs can be seen in the Middle Garden and along the corridors on each level. With the available space in the Little Farmer s Plot in the Middle Garden, the Club s next step is to grow vegetables using the organic farming method. A recently conducted survey revealed that the girls favourite place in the School is the library. The reading castle has been turned into a reading cottage, which sparks imagination and creativity. Each morning, the whole school begins with the Assembly in the spacious Junior School Hall. At last, all teachers and students can assemble comfortably to be nurtured by Christian sharing, and enjoy different presentations and performances after our worship. The state-of-the-art school campus is equipped with a number of new facilities. As you enter the Gascoigne Road entrance to the Junior School, you will see at once a landscaped courtyard. This DGJS Courtyard leads to some special facilities in the campus in addition to the two-storey library and the Assembly Hall. One of the special places is the Performing Arts Centre. Decorated with yellow spruce, it has a lively ambience and is an ideal place for holding music lessons, orchestra and band rehearsals and different musical performances for a small audience. Another special place is the Parent Teacher Association (PTA) Room, where dedicated parents spend countless hours planning activities and making important decisions for the benefit of the school and students. Right beside the PTA Room is the Chinese Culture Room. The Chinese calligraphy and art scrolls on the walls, together with the massive backdrop of a Chinese nature scene give this room a distinct identity and speak for the function of the room. The room is entirely devoted to the promotion of Chinese culture, providing a platform for students to enhance their interest in the history and culture of the motherland. At Level 2, you will find the air-conditioned, well-equipped DGJS gymnasium with clear glass windows overlooking nearby buildings and pedestrians. Physical Education lessons and various sports teams and clubs, such as volleyball, badminton and basketball are conducted here. You may take the huge elevator to Level 8 where the young scientists make observations, form hypotheses, perform experiments in the modern Science Centre, fully furnished with proper laboratory workstations

2 Next to the Science Centre is the Student Activity Centre. The two mirror walls make the Centre a perfect location for the Dance Club and drama lessons. The entire staff worked extremely hard to make the best use of the new facilities and expanded space to create the most favourable teaching and learning environment for our girls. Nevertheless, we soon understood that all beginnings entail difficulties and challenges, as the School had to face different teething problems. Contingency plans were executed while defects were rectified and emergency repairs were carried out in the school building. The achievements we see today are the results of the collaboration of every member in our large DGS family, the School Council and its different subcommittees, the teaching staff of the Senior and Junior Schools, parents and students. All have worked with great enthusiasm and commitment for the love and betterment of our School. On the academic front, our team of teachers enjoys a collaborative environment which facilitates professional development and ensures that our programmes are dynamic and flexible. In seeking to enrich our students appreciation of English literature, teachers dedicate special time to engage students in writing and poetry study. Our efforts were rewarded when Cheng Yi Ting (Pr. 5B) was awarded the Champion and the Poet of the School by the 2011/2012 Hong Kong Budding Poets Award organized by the Gifted Education Section of the Curriculum Development Institute of the Education Bureau. Other astounding poets from the School include Stephanie Leung, the Second Runner-up, and Serena Tsui, the Third Runner-up and the Best Improviser of the Year. Our students talents in creative writing are profound. In the Hong Kong Young Writers Award, stories written by our gifted young writers Celeste Wu (Pr. 6C) and Charlotte Leung (Pr. 5B) were published in the New Tales of the Yangtze River, the Anthology of The Hong Kong Young Writers Awards. Once again our students received recognition in the inter-school arena with their impressive speech performances. In the 63rd Hong Kong Schools Speech Festival, we captured 35 first places in the English Section solo speaking classes. The presentation of Chan Sum Yu (Pr. 5C) was so brilliant that she was recommended by the adjudicator to perform in the Prize-winners Recital. Both of our Harmonic Choral Speaking Groups, Primary Two and Primary Three, came first. We swept the top two places in the Improvised Dramatic Scene and Rehearsed Original Scene competitions. The trilingual skills possessed by our girls are truly outstanding. Not only are they eloquent in both English and Cantonese, they also demonstrate great proficiency in Putonghua. In the Chinese section of the Speech Festival, we won 23 first places in Cantonese and Putonghua entries. Music in DGJS is welcomed as a happy and vibrant activity. Each morning, we sing hymns to glorify our Heavenly Father in the Assembly. Students, as soon as they join the DGJS family, are therefore embraced by an atmosphere that encourages them to cultivate singing skills. For those who are more passionate about singing, they may further train their tonality and sense of rhythm by joining the School Choirs. These choirs participate in the Hong Kong Schools Music Festival every year and achieve stunning results. In the 64th Hong Kong Schools Music Festival, both our Senior and Intermediate Choirs secured the first place in the categories of Choral Singing in Chinese and Choral Singing in Foreign Language. The Senior Choir was selected as The Best Primary School Senior Choir in the Urban Area. One of the highlights of the Music Department last year was the participation in the 2012 World Choir Games in Cincinnati, USA, in July. The Diocesan Cincinnati Choir, comprising selected singers from Primary Four and Primary Five, competed in the Champions Competition in the category of Young Children s Choirs and was awarded the gold medal. Apart from competing, the choir joined the Parade of the Nations, performed at the Friendship Concert as well as sang as a visiting guest choir at the Christ Church Cathedral in Cincinnati to 2012 was an equally exciting year for girls involved in sports. The results in the inter-school competitions in the Kowloon

3 West Area were remarkable. The School attained championships in the inter-school swimming, volleyball, table tennis and badminton competitions, and the first runner-up in the athletics competition. In addition to these remarkable results, the School was awarded the Gold Prize for the best achievement in sports as well as a special Gold Cup for being the sole winner of the Gold Prize for twentythree consecutive years. Through participation in sports teams and vigorous training, players develop mental and physical resilience to overcome defeat. Girls also steel themselves to strive harder to improve their individual and team performances. In addition to supporting students to learn to the best of their abilities inside and beyond the classroom, the School assists students to cope with the curriculum in a meaningful and individual manner, while recognising that children can learn in different ways. Since the launching of the first Chinese Collaborative Learning Group, which is also known as Chinese CLG, nearly a decade ago, the School has received positive and appreciative feedback on this programme which caters for learner diversity. After returning to the Jordan Road Campus in the last academic year, the School was able to establish two other Collaborative Learning Groups to provide students with an alternative small-group learning environment outside their regular classrooms. We have started to operate the English CLG in Primary Four and the Mathematics CLG in Primary Three to enhance students skills in the English Language and Mathematics. Various pedagogies, scaffolding and questioning techniques were adopted and relevant group work and games were implemented in class to achieve the benefits of small class learning and teaching, as these classes have twelve students only in each class. Students sense of self-esteem and confidence in these two subjects were strengthened and satisfaction with their learning experience was enhanced. Parents and students evaluation and feedback on this new initiative were conducted and collected at the end of the school year and they were very encouraging indeed. The CLG teachers also observed noticeable improvement in some of the CLG students work attitude and learning progress. Collaborative Learning Groups have proven to be a well-received and successful approach in guiding students to reach their achievable goals. In July 2012, the School unveiled a new scholarship scheme to recognise the dedication and achievements of students in the fields of sports and music. The Sports Scholarship is designed to support students who have exhibited exceptional sporting prowess to attain their potential. Eleven outstanding young athletes were awarded the sports scholarships of $1,000 each in Students who have a profound commitment and made a major contribution to the Symphony Orchestra and instrumental classes will be rewarded with a music scholarship of $1,000 each. In , 14 music scholarships were granted by the School to encourage these musicians in their pursuit of excellence. In addition to the sports and music scholarship scheme, another scholarship has recently been established through the generosity of a donor to commemorate the 80th Anniversary of the enthronement of Bishop Ho Ming Hua (Ronald O. Hall) as Bishop of Hong Kong and South China in Bishop Hall upheld the Christian faith throughout his life with a heart for justice and welfare of society and individuals. Hence, the purpose of the scholarship is to promote both Christian and altruistic values among our students. In light of this, the Primary Six student who has been elected by her fellow schoolmates to receive the Mrs. Rebecca Yip Shield for her outstanding performance in Scripture, conduct and service, is also entitled to obtain the Bishop Ho Ming Hua Scholarship of $50,000. The scholarship will be offered annually from to the Mrs. Rebecca Yip Shield recipients. These scholarship schemes highlight the School s aims in emphasising both the academic and virtuous development of her students, under the spirit of nurturing students whole person development. At the end of the school year, we bade fond farewell to Mrs. C. Yeung and Mrs. J. Taylor, our long serving staff at their retirement. We wish them a healthy and robust retirement life

4 As we prepare for the Opening Ceremony for the redeveloped campus, memories of different phases of preparation for the redevelopment programmes are brought back. We have leaped over many hurdles to reach the finishing line of today. We praise our Heavenly Father for His abundant blessings on the School. We should also give thanks to the different angels who have been sent to help us. They are Ms. Stephanie Cheung, Ms. Benita Yu and their Legal Subcommittee; Mrs. Josephine Chang and members of the Finance Sub-committee; Mr. Hardy Lok, Mr. Marco Wu and members of the Building and Repairs Sub-committee; Mr. Kenneth Ting and members of the Fund-raising Sub-committee; Mr. Vincent Cheng and members of the DGS Education Foundation Limited; and our devoted and resourceful alumni from the DOGA Ltd. The School is grateful for their expertise, time and effort to bring about the success and celebration we enjoy today. Elizabeth Lo and Mr. Jeffrey Sun had faithfully guided this massive school redevelopment project to completion before their retirement. I also welcome and look forward to the guiding light from our new School Council Chairman, the Rt. Revd. Andrew Chan and other serving and new Council members in leading the School to a higher platform to face new changes and endeavours. As we celebrate in the year 2013 the Centenary Anniversary of moving DGS to this campus at 1 Jordan Road, let us continue to glorify our Heavenly Father with one heart and one voice for giving us this magnificent and beautiful school. I must also take my hat off to the Parent Teacher Association (PTA) for their contributions and generous donations. The PTA s manpower and financial resources made our initial year of settling in the redeveloped campus much easier. The new and attractive outdoor furniture carefully chosen and purchased by the PTA at Levels 3 and 4, and at the DGJS courtyard and Art Garden at Level 1 allow our girls to resort to their little cozy, outdoor spots to chat and enjoy lunch with their buddies. My heartfelt thanks are also extended to the PTA Uniform Subcommittee for introducing the stylish grey trench coat to the DGS winter uniform. All the girls welcome this addition and love the smart, warm and comfortable trench coat during the winter. To close the report, I would like to thank the School Council for its guidance, support and trust extended to me as I serve the School in this challenging year, and especially to the School Supervisor Mrs. Doris Ho, JP and the Senior School Headmistress Mrs. Stella Lau, JP for their vision and courage in steering the School. To support the worldwide environmental event that took place on 31 March 2012, the School participated in Earth Hour 2012 organized by World Wide Fund for Nature. Besides turning off all the

6 lights at School in the evening between 8:30 p.m. and 9:30 p.m., the School also ran a school-version of Earth Hour on 30 March 2012 by turning off all the classroom lights during lunch. Students were encouraged to join this event with their families at home and extend their action to protect the environment in daily life. h. In June the Environmental Education team continued to promote students environmental awareness. Short videos were shown with follow-up discussions and exercises. For Primary 1 and Primary 2, the topic was on daily environmentallyfriendly practices, while the Primary 3 and Primary 4 girls compared the pros and cons of using disposal plastic bags and different reusable bags. For Primary 5 and Primary 6, the topic was on garbage disposal and landfill problem in Hong Kong. i. The Environmental and Gardening Club (EGC) conducted meetings regularly throughout the year. Members participated in different environmentally friendly practices at school. Gardening: 1. Environmental and Gardening Club members developed their appreciation for plants through gardening. They learnt to grow and transplant various flowers, plants and vegetables. Most were used to beautify different levels of the school premises. Students were also responsible for watering the plants. 2. In January 2012, Environmental and Gardening Club girls learnt how to take care of narcissus bulbs for celebrating Chinese Lunar New Year. They also decorated the lobby and different floors with Chinese New Year couplets written by them. Tangerine plants and other seasonal flowers were placed along the corridors and open areas to enrich the Chinese New Year festival atmosphere. 3. In April, EGC members learnt how to prepare for the mung beans to sprout. They had to change the water twice every day in order to grow healthy and edible bean sprouts. On the fifth day, students were able to bring their bean sprouts home to share with their families. 4. EGC members and all Primary 5 girls joined the Green Christmas Activity by making Christmas wreaths with old plastic folders. Visits: 1. In February, the Club members and teachers-in-charge visited the Green Garden in Fanling. This was a half-day guided tour. There was a talk on how to properly use gardening tools and plant vegetables. Students had a chance to do some digging and hands-on planting in the field

7 2. In March, the Club members and teachers-in-charge visited the annual Hong Kong Flower Show. Parents were invited to join the visit. Competitions: 1. The One Student One Flower Scheme that was launched in November was part of the school greening scheme, sponsored by the Leisure and Cultural Services Department. 2. The Environmental Ambassadors participated in the Hong Kong Park Green Hunt competition organized by the Leisure and Cultural Services Department and the Hong Kong Bird Watching Society. They had to complete various missions while searching for and identifying birds around the park. They came third in the competition and won the Best Hat Design Award. 11. Moral and Civic Education a. Lessons on personal growth education were coordinated by the Student Guidance Officer and team members. Different topics were designed for different grades. The School participated in a territory-wide healthy eating campaign entitled EatSmart@school.hk, promoted by the Department of Health. The following activities were organized by parents and teachers to promote healthy eating habits: a. A greeting card colouring competition was organized for Primary 1 to Primary 3 students to promote the eating of more fruit. A monthly Fruit Day was held to promote healthy eating habits among students. c. The School organized the Fruit Day and the Fruit Platter Design Competition on 29 March 2012, as part of the Eat Smart at School campaign promoted by the Department of Health, to foster students habit of daily fruit intake. Teachers and students were encouraged to eat fruit together during the class period to support Fruit Day. d. Year round The School and the PTA lunchbox committee conducted regular meetings with the lunch caterer to ensure that the food and school lunch were nutritious and healthy. Healthy Reminders Programme (snacks and lunch) Teachers conducted random checks on students lunch and snacks to encourage healthy eating habits. 17. School Physical Fitness Award Scheme To promote awareness of health-related physical fitness, 439 students from Primary 3 to Primary 6 took part in the School Physical Fitness Award Scheme, organized by the EDB and the Hong Kong Child Health Foundation. The participants were required to take up regular exercises and undergo the fitness test in P.E. lessons. They all did very well in the test and proved to be physically fit. 70 girls were awarded the bronze badge, 116 girls were awarded the silver badge and 209 girls were awarded the gold badge

11 18. Promotion of Putonghua a. PTH ambassadors were recruited to promote the use of PTH regularly during morning assembly. b. A PTH drama group for Primary 3 and 6 students was formed. Meetings were held every Monday after school to give students more opportunities to practise their PTH in an enjoyable way. This drama group was run by our PTH teachers. c. Students performed in the Putonghua Variety Show on 23 February 2012 in the school hall. The performances included drama, a millionaire game show, speech and storytelling in Putonghua. Parents were also invited to attend the function. d. This year s PTH Day was successfully held on 24 April Students were grouped by their grade levels and participated in games appropriate to their levels. Students were rewarded with stamps on their game cards and received prizes. Over 150 prizes were handed out to our enthusiastic students. e. PTH Chatrooms were organized at lunchtime by PTH teachers for lower primary classes in groups of ten students to offer them more opportunities to speak PTH in an enjoyable way. 19. Science and Technology Education a. Lego Mindstorms Robotics Workshops were arranged for Primary 5 and 6 students from November 2011 to March b. Pr. 6 Science Fair Exhibition 2012 The Pr. 6 girls successfully held their science fair on 25 and 26 June 2012 to exhibit their GSI annual projects. c. Science Adventures Science Show presented by SPCA: Science Adventures collaborated with SPCA this year and presented a talk to introduce the practical use of science in their organization (SPCA) and their scope of work for our Primary 1 to Primary 6 students. This serves as a real-world application of how science is present in our everyday life. d. Gifted Young Scientists Workshop In the Gifted Young Scientists Workshop, students were divided into two levels: Advanced and Beginners Levels. The Beginners Level catered for Primary 4 and 5 students, introducing scientific investigation skills. Dr. Jimmy Wong from the Hong Kong New Generation Cultural Association Science Innovation Centre taught this course. The Advanced Level catered for Primary 5 and 6 students who completed the course in the previous year. They created their own invention using everyday materials and tools. Mr. David Tang from the Hong Kong New Generation Cultural Association Science Innovation Centre taught this course. 20. Brownie Activity Visit to 樂活有機農莊 21. A Briefing Session was organized for Primary 6 parents on Application Procedures for Admission to DGS on 6 December Mrs. Stella Lau, the Headmistress of DGS, was invited to attend and speak to our Primary 6 parents. 22. An English drama course for Primary 2 and 3 on the play Mulan was run by Eduarts from September 2011 to June It was an introduction to the basic skills of acting and was intended to prepare students for more advanced acting in the future. The participants learned basic drama techniques and performed Mulan on 21 June In the school annual production of the Shakespeare4All Drama Club, the Primary 4 and 5 students performed the Shakespearean play Macbeth on 25 May This year, they also participated in the Learning and Participation Festival and performed in the theatre of Sai Wan Ho Civic Centre on 12 May Outward Bound School The three graduating Primary 6 classes attended a 5-day camp from 21 to 25 May 2012 at the Outward Bound School. A briefing session was organized for students on 3 May 2012 and for parents on 11 May 2012 respectively to prepare them for the Outward Bound School

12 25. The DGJS Red Cross Ceremony was organized on 27 April The Territory-wide System Assessment (TSA) was arranged for Primary 3 students in June, as required by the Education Bureau. It covers three subjects: Mathematics, Chinese Language and English Language. The Mixed Voice Choir of DGS and DBS sang the greater part of the performance piece and the combined choirs of DGJS and DBSPD participated in the fifth movement of the suite.
