12 With the Olympics over until Rio 2016, the Paralympics took centre-stage in late August with BSc alumnus and current MSc student Ben Quilter aiming for glory in the men s -60kg Judo. After finishing fifth at Beijing 2008, Ben has climbed the ranks to become world number one judoka in the men's -60kg category. Ben had to overcome several injuries in the months leading up to the Games; he suffered a prolapsed disc in his spine, and then tore the medial collateral ligament and anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee. He was forced to keep his injuries under wraps through fear that his opponents would exploit them at the Games, all of which made his bronze medal a more astounding accomplishment.
