1 YORK CAMPUS Secondary School NEWSLETTER Spring Half Term Issue 2015 Dear Parents and Community As we approach the half term break, it is a time for pause and reflect on what has been a very busy six weeks. We have survived our first winter at York Campus without disruption to learning hopefully the worst of the weather is behind us and we can look forward to Spring. Parents will be aware of two changes in transport arrangements this term. Newcastle students now travel to school on a coach, allowing them to either make use of table space to work on the journey or the comfortable seating to catch up on valuable sleep. The new bus to desk policy seems to be working well. Buses are arriving promptly for the start of the school day. Thank you. Our new half-termly newsletter contains information and photographs about school events this term, including the year 13 Business Day and a visit from Sue Ryder Wheatfields Hospice to receive a cheque for 150 raised from the end-of-term cake stall in December. A talk about the work of the Hospice gave students an insight into how the donation would be used. The last week of the half term has been extremely busy with interviews for several posts. Students have been actively involved in the recruitment process all candidates have been asked to teach sample lessons and the School Council gave prospective Head teachers an impressive grilling. Results of the interviews will be published after half term. External examinations are only 9 school weeks away! Those students involved need to use the holiday time wisely and begin their preparation and revision for the examinations. Instrument tuition is now being provided in school and several students have taken up the opportunity to learn to play the piano. We would like to encourage tuition of woodwind and string instruments. If anyone is interested in learning to play the violin, flute, clarinet or other instrument, please contact Mr Perkin. Many thanks to all parents and volunteers for your support and commitment to the school over the last half term. 2 YORK CAMPUS YEAR 13 ENTERPRISE DAY Year 13 were truly put through the mill during January when they took part in a morning of presentations, interviews, discussions and intense questioning. Businesses also displayed trade stands and raised awareness of employment opportunities and their expectations of future employees. Thank you to everyone who attended, contributed or was involved in any way (including parents), or who gave their time to support the students and made the morning such a success. Well done Year 13! You were fantastic. 2

4 END-OF-TERM HOT LUNCH Thank you to Mrs June James and her cooks for the lovely end-of-term lunch, and also the ongoing weekly lunches that the children enjoy so much. See right the staff enjoyed their December lunch at the end-ofterm too. 4

5 YEARS 12 and 13 CULINARY SKILLS On the 11th December 2014, five sixth form pupils, Corrie, Kiri, Braden, Daniel and Jared were presented with the task of providing a two course meal for four, in a tight timeframe of 2½ hours. Part of the assessment criteria was to demonstrate two different cooking methods and two skills. The external examiner was amazed with the range and creativity the pupils demonstrated in their meal choices. Corrie Soulsby, Year 13 5 FEBRUARYISSUE

6 SECONDARY SCHOOL COUNCIL UPDATE School Council Minutes from Wednesday 28 January Water can be purchased during breaktimes or lunchtimes. Whole School Choir need to speak to the trustees. KS3 and 4 choirs will most likely be brought together. There isn t time for the older students to do it unless it is at break times or lunchtimes. Kelvin Poole to follow up. Recreation Room out of bounds before school, open at other times until better weather, then it will be reviewed. Sixth Form Common Room common room out of the question, there is a vending machine coming for 6th Form use. Study Leave there is going to be study leave although not as much as usual. There are going to be additional lessons at school which will be optional but recommended. Talent Show will not be able to use this name, but will be able to go ahead after the exams. German Market/Culture Day will have to be during the holiday sometime. Needs thinking through. Tuck Shop Money of around 170 could be used for another open topped football table. Open for student feedback and ideas. Could also be used for expanding the range of musical equipment at school. Gym this is off for various reasons, please speak to Daniel or Giles. By Daniel Stutterheim, Chairman DONATION TO WHEATFIELDS HOSPICE We had a wonderful cake stall at our Presentation Day; many community members had been baking for several weeks and a beautiful array of cakes were available for sale. 150 of the funds raised were donated to the Sue Ryder Wheatfields Hospice in Leeds. On the 4th February, Mrs Lupton from Wheatfields came into school to talk to the children about Wheatfields Hospice, the care they provide and receive a cheque. See right our Head Boy, Bradley Culmer, and Head Girl, Rebecca Hindley, presenting the cheque to Mrs Lupton. 6

Several year groups in the secondary school are visiting the Leeds Festival of Science next month watch out for further news following these trips! 7
