1 MIDDLE SCHOOL CLUBS ART CLUB Mondays 3:05-4:00 Room Art 1 Kim Friedman The Art Club is open to all students that love visual arts. The club gives an opportunity for students to be creative at their own pace, and to be able to work with many different mediums. Students come with their ideas, and I ll provide the materials. Please bring your willingness to create, as well as your desire to have fun! ART HONOR SOCIETY Wednesdays 3:00-4:00 Room Art 2 Danielle Young The National Junior Art Honor Society (NJAHS) is designed specifically for 8 th grade students. In 1989, the National Art Education Association began NJAHS program to inspire to recognize students who have shown an outstanding ability and interest in art and to generate interest in art programs at the secondary level and beyond. Students who are interested in joining must fulfill requirements as well as be selected by club s advisors. CHAMBER CHOIR Twice a Week Day TBA 3:00-4:00 James Ludwig Open by audition to all students in grades 6, 7, 8. Chamber Choir is an auditioned vocal ensemble that performs choral music in a wide variety of styles. This group will take field trips to perform outside of school and will perform in school as well. This choir is intended to provide an opportunity for our most motivated singers to participate in an advanced level ensemble. Students will audition for this select choir in September. Specific audition information will be posted at the beginning of the school year. Students will be selected based on a performance rubric. This ensemble will rehearse twich a week after school. CHAMBER ORCHESTRA Sept. and May Krista Weis Mondays and Wednesdays 3:00-4:00 in the Band Room Chamber Orchestra is open to advanced violin, viola, cello and bass students by audition. The group performs at concerts and festivals. CHESS & GAMES CLUB Mondays 3:00-4:00 Room 208 Jackie Lipsky The Chess and Games Club is open to all students. The club will give students an opportunity to learn chess strategies, make new friends, and just play for fun. Checkers, Scrabble, and other board games are also played. There is a chess ladder tournament in the spring for those who wish to participate.

2 COMMUNITY CHOIR MEETING James Ludwig Once a Week Day TBA 3:00-4:00 Chorus Room HMS Community Choir provides an opportunity for all students interested in singing outside of chorus during the school day. We will work on a wide variety of music and will have performance opportunities throughout the year. Students do not have to be registered for chorus during the day to participate. COMPUTER AFTER SCHOOL Christine Macri/Roxanne Green M, T,W,F 3:00-4:00 Computer Room The computer room is open for one hour every day after school for students who need to use the computers. Students can also help write, design, and maintain Herricks Middle School s web site. This site publishes information that is of interest to our students and the community. Dependable students with an interest in computers, the Internet, writing, or in art are encouraged to participate. Students are not permitted to play games during this time. FRENCH CLUB Tuesdays 3:00-4:00 Room 119 Rose Lempereur The French Club is open to all 6th, 7th, and 8th grade French students. Club activities will focus on cultural enrichment as well as the opportunity to speak French in an informal setting. Activities will include preparing French food, playing French games, participating in community-based activities, and more. GARDENING CLUB Tuesdays 2:50-3:30 (Subject to change based on planting/growing season) Michelle Kaplan This club will meet to maintain our existing garden, greenhouse and pond. Members will undertake new projects that include but are not limited to designing, planning and putting in new plantings to make our green spaces more beautiful. Students will research important techniques for gardening in order to gain knowledge of plants and ecology as they work on our gardens. The club will also look to promote sustainable living in the school through the use of our gardens and greenhouse.

3 HMS BOOK REVIEW Kristina Seligson/ Jen Cleary Select Wednesdays 3:00-4:00 Library The HMS Book Review Club meets in the HMS Library twice a month on Wednesdays. This club gives students a chance to discuss the books they are reading with other students. We pick several whole group reads but also talk about books we are reading independently. The HMS Book Review often watches movies that were books first both in the library as well as on field trips to the movie theater. HONOR SOCIETY Meeting times to be Announced 3:00-4:00 in cafeteria for all members. Officers meet more often. Kerrin Muller/ Jen Cleary The Honor Society consists of 8th grade students who are selected at the end of the third quarter of 7th grade. Grades from the first three quarters of grade 7 are used to determine eligibility. A cumulative average of 3.66 must be achieved. Sixth grade students are not eligible and no sixth grade marks can be used toward meeting criteria. (To maintain membership, members must continue to have a 3.66 average or above.) In addition to the academic achievement of a 3.66 GPA, student candidates must show evidence of exemplary behavior and a wholesome attitude toward other students, faculty, and school property. Faculty assessment of behavior and attitude toward peers, staff and school property is a major step in establishing eligibility for membership. The society engages in charitable and social activities determined by the members, student officers, and the advisor. Service to school and community is emphasized. Student officers are expected to attend additional planning meetings beyond those for the general membership. ITALIAN CLUB Tuesdays 2:55-3:35 Room 224 Antonella Castellano The Italian Club will be exploring Italian culture and language. Activities may include cooking, cinema, theater, and art. The Italian Club is open to all students even if you don t take Italian. All students are welcome. JAZZ ENSEMBLE - GR. 6, 7 & 8 Mondays and Wednesdays 3:00-4:00 Auditorium Geoffrey Taylor This group, open to trumpets, trombones, saxophones, flutes, piano, guitar, bass, and drums by audition, will rehearse weekly and perform at evening concerts.

4 MATH COUNTS MEETING Alyssa Khan Wednesdays 3:00-4:00 Room 121 Josephine Bruno The Math Counts competitive team will train every other week to prepare for the county competition. Students who qualify will then go on to compete in regional, state, and hopefully even national level competitions. The Math Counts club will engage in hands-on problem solving activities. MATH OLYMPIADS Wednesdays 3:00-4:00 Room 214 Josephine Bruno The Math Olympiad is a club open to 6, 7, and 8 grade students which participates in five math competitions each year. Weekly sessions will feature practice problems to prepare for the competitions. MATHLETES Mondays 3:00-4:00 Room 218 Josephine Bruno Mathletes is an opportunity for 7th and 8th grade students to compete with other schools in the area of creative problem solving. Weekly practice sessions are held to prepare for competitions against schools across Nassau County. MATH RESEARCH PROGRAM Wednesdays 3:00-5:00 Library and Room 214 Alyssa Khan/ Stacy Hart Math Research Program is an opportunity for 7 th and 8 th grade students to write a math research paper and present their topic in a 15 minute presentation at the Long Island Math Fair. MOTHER-DAUGHTER BOOK CLUB (Or any other important adult female) Jenna Caggiano Tammy Eng Evening meetings in the library This club offers an opportunity for girls to read books together with their parents, grandparents, or other adults who are important in their lives. The books will involve themes that are of particular interest to Middle School girls, such as growing up, being popular, and relationships among family members. It is not necessary to attend every meeting. Refreshments will be served.

5 NATIONAL HISTORY DAY CLUB Jodi Thompson Selected Tuesdays 3:00-4:00 in the Library The National History Day Club helps prepare students for the National History Day Competition, the largest social studies event in our nation. Students are given a theme around which they create one of five possible research projects; a documentary, a performance, a written paper, a website or a museum exhibit. Students may work alone or with a small group. During the after school meetings the advisors of the club help students refine their research skills, find resources to use and provide guidance in project creation however students must also work on projects at home. PROJECT CITIZEN; WE THE PEOPLE Tuesday 3:00-4:00 Room 103 Amanda Banke Project Citizen is a civic education program for middle school students. It promotes competent and responsible participation in state, local and federal government. It actively engages people in learning how to monitor and influence public policy. Participants work together as a class or extracurricular group to identify and study a public policy issue. The final product is a portfolio that may be presented before other classes, groups, community organizations, or policymakers. In this club, students will work together to identify a problem or problems in their community that can be changed through local, and other policy changes. Students will meet to come up with alternative options and action plans and proposals to fix the issue; as well as make a culminating project and portfolio that can be submitted and judged at both the state and local level. ROBOTICS Tuesdays 3:00-3:45 Room Tech 1 Ashley Vertucci The Students will be working with Lego Mindstorm kits. Their goal will be to build a robot to complete as many missions as possible for the competition which will be held in January. This club is open to 7 th and 8 th grade students. SCIENCE CLUBS I, II ANIMALS & EXPERIMENTS Tuesdays 3:00-4:00 Rooms Sci. 1 and Sci. 2 Joseph Mauro Jay Krinsky These clubs will focus on different hands-on activities related to science. Students will care for animals and perform various experiments.

6 SCIENCE CLUB III RECYCLING Mondays 3:00-4:00 Room Sci 7 Courtney Petratos The students will learn about recycling and how we use recycled plastic. They will collect plastic water bottles and use the money from recycling to donate to a scientific cause. They will do research and decide as a group where the recycling money should go at the end of the year. SPANISH CLUB Wednesdays 3:00-4:00 Room 101 The Spanish Club is open to all 6th, 7th and 8th grade Spanish students. Club activities include a variety of experiences such as cooking, singing, and culture of the Hispanic people. Emphasis will also be on speaking the Spanish language. SPANISH IMMERSION Mondays 3:00-4:00 Room 101 The Spanish Immersion Club is open to students in our immersion program. The Community and Culture Standards will be addressed in a club setting. Students will explore the Spanish speaking communities that exist within our region and the cultures that they bring to enrich our diverse population in New York State. STUDY CENTER Open Daily 3:00-4:30 Room 105 Victoria Andreacchi/Helene Geringer This is an opportunity for students to have a secure, dedicated area to complete homework, complete class assignments and study. Materials supporting these activities are provided. Students should see the Librarian during the day if their needs are beyond that. STUDENT GOVERNMENT Tuesdays 3:00-4:00 Room 110 and 112 Moria Sabo Denise Bucher An officer from each grade, a representative, and alternate from each social studies class, are elected by students in October. Meetings will be held on Tuesdays (3-4) and extra hours after school as needed. Meetings will also be held throughout the school day. Student Government sponsors events such as dances, fundraisers, and community service. Active members will also be involved in Homecoming celebrations, Spirit Week and activities at HMS. Further activities will be decided by members of the Student government throughout the course of the year. All students are welcome to join, not just elected members.

7 TECHNOLOGY CLUB Tuesdays 3:00-4:00 Tech 1 Dan Gillam All students are welcome to join the Technology Club. The club s purpose is to encourage creative thinking. Students will use computers to build 3-dimentional models using the latest industry software. TRI M MUSIC HONOR SOCIETY Alicia Brown Tri-M focuses on building leaders and music advocates. Tri- would offer students the opportunity to serve our local community through music-based service projects, such as performing at local hospitals and retirement communities, starting a music mentoring program, and hosting fundraising events for organizations students care about. WIND ENSEMBLE CLUB Fall-Twice a week until the Winter Concer 7:00am-7:35 am Alicia Brown This club is for an advanced performing concert band music group. This gives advanced band musicians the opportunity to be challenged more musically. This club will provide additional challenges and motivation for advanced musicians. It s the intent of the club to perform at the winter concert as play for the community at local venues. This club would be an audition group for select students. MUSICAL PRODUCTION Deborah Walker Auditions are at the end of October, performance is in February. Auditorium Show off your talent sing, dance, and act!! Possible need for instrumentalists as well. INTRAMURAL SPORTS Mark Nuccio Intramural sports are held at the Middle School on Mondays and Wednesdays from 3:00-4:25. All boys and girls in grades 6, 7, and 8 are welcome to participate. All students wishing to participate must have a signed parental consent form on file.
