I would also like to thank my son, Rob Marshall for being our DJ, Kick Boxing & Zumba instructor in Back to Life at Marshall s ATA 2017 The Holidays have winded down and the lights and decorations are stowed away for another year. Loved ones have returned home or we ve made our way back over the highways, byways or through the air to our warm & comfortable homes. Instead of visions of sugar plums dancing in the children s heads, now comes the return to the classroom and the cacophony of school, the routines of after school teams, activities and the resumption of our individual schedules. Most of our days will be a continuation of our lives but years are a time capsule and each year holds information that can be useful to us if we will take inventory of them and decide what to hold on to and what to discard. This will be a great class for all levels of students and non students so please invite friend. We will discuss real world dangerous situations and threatening scenarios from a non martial artist perspective. Non violent mediation tactics should always be the first option in any potential physical confrontation while being aware that there other self-defense options that could be deployed should the need arise to remove yourself from a violent or even life threatening altercation. One in four girls and one in six boys will be sexually abused before they turn 18 years old. 34% of people who sexually abuse a child are family members. 12.3% of women were age 10 or younger at the time of their first rape/victimization, and 30% of women were between that ages of 11 and % of men were age 10 or younger at the time of their first rape/victimization.
3 Solidarity in Store for Denton s MLK Day Page 3 Events are set for Denton s annual Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. celebration on Jan 16th. This year s theme, Our Past Will Shape Our Future. looks to bring together traditional elements of the annual observation, along with some additions and more than an estimated 1,000 participants throughout the day, according to organizers. All activities are free and open to the public. Among the festivities slated is an 11:00 am, youth flag football tournament; a 3 pm rally at the University of North Texas Union, 1155 Union Circle followed by a 4 pm march from the Union to Fred Moore Park, 501 S. Bradshaw Street. Participants from UNT, the community and the southeast Denton neighborhood are expected to meet up at the park and complete the quarter-mile walk from the park to the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Recreation Center, 1300 Wilson, St. where a celebratory program is planned directly afterward. Program performers and speakers include the Ryan High School ROTC presenting the colors; the American Legion Senior Center Choir performing the National Anthem; Step teams from Braswell and Ryan High Schools; District 1 Council Member Kevin Roden, who is slated to read a proclamation; UNT s ETA Epsilon chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha fraternity Inc. leading a brief presentation.; and remarks from a member of the Denton Ministerial Alliance. Food and refreshments will be served. Annually, the gathering brings together hundreds of people of all races, creeds, genders and ages, to sing march and celebrate. Many carry signs signifying the impact of Dr. King s life, message and legacy on American society. Born Jan 15, 1929 in Atlanta, Dr. King was an African American minister, and activist who advocated nonviolence, in fighting, marching and demonstrating for the civil rights of Black Americans. He also spoke out against injustice toward the poor and Blacks. A recipient of the 1964 Nobel Peace Prize, Dr. King is most known for his I Have A Dream Speech delivered on the steps of the Lincoln Memorial in Washington, D.C., during the 1963 March on Washington. At the age of 39, Dr. King was assassinated April 4, 1968, while standing on the balcony of his hotel room in Memphis, Tennessee. The efforts of Dr. King and many others led to advancements for people of color, including the Civil Rights Act of 1964 and the Voting Rights Act of In 1983, President Ronald Reagan signed a bill establishing the 3rd Monday of every January as a National Holiday known as Dr. Martin Luther, King, Jr. Day. The first national holiday was observed in Congress designated the King holiday a National Day of Service in 1994, and since then, Americans have commemorated the holiday by coming together to serve neighbors in their communities. For more details on Denton s annual Dr. Martin Luther, King, Jr. holiday festivities, call (940) Protocol for Testing Students must be on a program in order to be eligible to test. Students must wear their traditional white uniform. Any student who is at the testing but not participating is still expected to be wearing their complete uniform. Leadership students are expected to assist in whatever capacity 21-Day Challenge Starting Jan 23rd, 2017 Marshall s ATA conducted our first ever 21-Day Challenge last year in February. I decided to conduct this 21-Day challenge as a voluntary experiment to test the students Will, Resolve, Commitment and Accountability to seeing a positive predetermined task all the way through to the end. I was genuinely surprised at how committed the students were to their 21-Day Challenges last year and I feel that it went very well. Some students committed to being diligent and persistent in making up their bed every single day for 21 straight days. Some committed to doing 21 straight days of 20 push ups. Some students committed to giving up television, or sugary snacks for 21 straight days. Some students decided to do a kind deed everyday for 21 straight days. There was a signup sheet for the students who committed to the Challenge. The students provided documentation from their accountability partners or parents stating that they did indeed complete their challenge. I would like to offer this 21-Day Challenge again this year in February 2017 and perhaps annually. This is an opportunity to purify our mind and body. To organize our environment at home, school or work. To declutter all of the detritus that accumulated during the Holidays and previous years. To focus on our diet and health. Perhaps we need to go to bed earlier or get out of bed earlier in order to complete our 21-Day Challenge. We understand that 21 Days is not a long period of time, but the object is to simply find a point at which to BEGIN to make the positive changes that could lead to so many more beneficial changes throughout this new year To your health.
4 New Word of the Cycle - Action Page 4 My 2017 New Year s Word of the Cycle: ACTION Action The fact or process of doing something, typically to achieve an aim. Used by a movie director as a command to begin. A thing done; an ACT. A gesture or movement, a manner or style of doing something, typically the way in which a mechanism works or a person moves. The mechanism that makes a machine or instrument work. Activate - means to make (something) active or operative. Initiate - means to cause (a process or action) to begin. My first 2017 New Year s Word of the Cycle: ACTION Your beliefs become your thoughts, Your thoughts become your words, Your words become your actions, Your actions become your habits, Your habits become your values, Your values become your destiny. Mahatma Gandhi Continued 2016 Year in Review December Marcellus Jackson completes his Black Belt Midterm. Marshall s ATA Christmas/Winter Belt Testing. The New Word of the Cycle was unveiled as ACTION. Marshall s ATA closed for Christmas Holiday break. Marshall s ATA reopens after the Christmas holiday with our regular schedule. Marshall s ATA closed for the New Year s Holiday and reopened on January 3rd, Marshall s ATA Check In This year in 2017, I would like to ask all of our families who have access to a smart phone and a Facebook account to please do a Check In as soon as they arrive on the Marshall s ATA premises. I am curious as to whether or not Social media will be something useful to our school. It has been suggested that we should start using Facebook, Instagram, Twitter and the Web to share our school with the community. Let s give it a shot and see what happens.
