2 Dear Parents and Friends, What a great start to the school year! It was fabulous to have students arrive at school before the 8.55am bell and be organised for their day in plenty of time. We don t encourage families to be late to school, the time before school and at the start of class time is considered important in every child s education, time to connect with friends and teachers is vital when beginning each school day. Some reminders about every child s daily routine: When students arrive at school, they are expected to unpack their bag and set up their table. This means that they need to take their reader out of their bag, their drink bottle (which can only have water in it) and their fruit snack. If an adult accompanies them to school they may like to read together at this time, if not they can go outside to play until the bell goes at 8.55am. Fruit snacks should be fresh fruit. Tubs of fruit or yoghurt are not ideal (anything that needs a spoon) as the students are expected to continue working while they snack. A snack is something they can eat in a few minutes, this snack is not something that takes 15 minutes to eat. Ideally cut up fruit is the best way to entice your child to eat it. Fruit snack is not offered until 10.00am, so staff encourage parents to make sure their child/children has had a sufficient breakfast prior to coming to school. The second fruit snack is offered at 12.30pm. Working Bee Thank you to the families that attended the Working Bee over the weekend. It was particularly pleasing to hear from a couple of families that couldn t attend on Sunday and came on Saturday morning for a few hours. It doesn t matter when the jobs get done, as long as they get done. Thanks also to those that have offered to help with other jobs at a later date. Sunday was super hot and I am grateful for the time families put in to making our school look pristine. There are 2 events coming up that all families are invited to be a part of and attend: pm: Friday 8th February - Beginning of Year Mass and Dinner (invitation sent home on Friday) pm: Tuesday 12th February - Annual General Meeting of the School Board and Parents & Friends (invitation is being sent home with students today) Building Update The final stage of the building works will begin in a few weeks, this is to happen to the administration side of the school. When this happens there will be some significant changes to entry points for students as the side gate will be blocked off. Students arriving at school from Jeffrey Street will enter through the doors at the library end of the building. Students that ride a bike or scooter will need to enter the school grounds via Childers Street (Chevalier Centre). Once the date is confirmed there will be more detailed information given to all.

Monday 11th February Monday 25th March Monday 1st April Student Leaders We are blessed with a super group of grade 6 students this year and as such have made the commitment to supporting all of them to show their own leadership skills during the school year. As there are 3 grade 6 students they will all be responsible for an area of the school each term. Their leadership responsibilities, include school events as well as community events (EG: ANZAC Day, Community Carols, Remembrance Day) outside of school hours.support will be given to all students at all times and especially when it is their turn to lead at school events. School Board and Parents & Friends. If you are interested in being on the School Board and/or a Parent Rep for the Parents & Friends, please come and have a chat. We are in need of some new members for the School Board and a few more Parent Reps.

4 Have you noticed our hallway walls? Keep an eye out as they change to celebrate the achievements of our learners and teachers. Thanks to Christine Carty for preparing these displays. Children s Chatter Matters! Below is a family friendly, fun oral language tasks aimed to enhance learning and literacy skills. Phonological awareness is one of the key building blocks for reading and writing. It is listening to, and thinking about the sounds in words. Find compound words in your child s book/reader and practice breaking the word into two separate parts. For example bookshelf is made up of book and shelf. Can you think of other compound words you could make? For example: bookend, bookmark, bookstore, bookcase Here are some practice words: toothbrush, shoelace, bowtie, football. As a harder task, remove one part of a compound word, and ask your child to say what part of the word is left. For example, What s left if I take away rain from rainbow = (bow).

5 BLITZ Graduate Outcomes and School Expectations: Our Lady of the Sacred Heart School seeks to educate students to be: Self-Aware Collaborative Compassionate Courageous Students are taught the qualities of a person with these skills. Teachers celebrate and work with students to enable them to reach their potential. Students were introduced to a new reward for BLITZ winners. Each week a $5 Bakery voucher is awarded to the most outstanding student of the week. Tarli Nihill- For her fabulous skill of role modelling to the new Grade 2 s. Keep up the great work Tarli. Michael Gibson- For the magnificent start, he has had to grade 5. You have really shown great commitment to your learning. Super effort Michael. Beginning of Year Mass and Dinner: Mass at 6pm DInner following mass. Dinner will be pizza. $2 per slice or $18 per pizza. Order form attached to the newsletter. Please return order form with money by Wednesday 6th February. School Lunches Lunches can be ordered from the Elmore Bakery again this year. We are grateful for this service and look forward to working with the Bakery in 2019.

6 I have been working with Bendigo Community Health towards achieving Healthy Eating status for our school. When the lunch order form is sent home you will notice a change in its appearance. Items on the list have been Food Checked to ensure we are only offering healthy options. Students may ONLY order items from the lunch order list. Should other items be ordered, they will be sent home for consumption after school. I thank you in advance for your assistance with this. Elmore Charity Ball - 9th & 10th March Fundraising is an important part of our school. The funds we raise as a community are directed back into resources that provide high quality learning opportunities for all students.
