3 GETTING THE CORRECT ANSWER BY SPEAKING TO THE RELEVANT PERSON Kindly follow the prescribed order There is a problem in my child s class. 4 FIRST WEEKS OF SCHOOL In order to ensure that your child s transition into Grade One is a smooth and happy one, we have decided to stagger the collection time for the first two weeks of school. We request that your child be collected from his/her classroom on Wednesday 21 until Friday 30 January at 13:00. Please note that from Monday, 2 February 2015, the Grade One school day will end at 14h00. GRADE ONE SCHOOL DAY The school day for Grade One will commence at 08:00 and end at 14:00 (Monday - Friday). Co-curricular sporting activities (inclusive in the school day) will take place on a Monday and Wednesday from 13:15 to 14:00. Learners will be required to make a choice from the sporting activities available on each of these days. The sporting and extramural programme on offer will be sent to parents on the first day of the new quarter. Please select your child s choice and return the form to their class teacher as soon as possible. Extramural activities (Art Society, Drama Society, French Society, Dance and Golf) will take place from 14:00 to 15:00.

5 DROP OFF AND COLLECTION Parents are requested to use the Drop off and Collection Zone at the back of the school in Wood Drive. Should parents wish to accompany learners to the classrooms, we ask that you please park in the parking bays along Wood Drive. CLOCKING IN Our Grade One learners will be registered on our Biometric system from the second quarter. The learners will then need to clock in when they arrive at school. An automated message will be sent to parents in the event of a learner failing to clock in by 08:15. AFTERCARE Learners attending Aftercare will be escorted to the venue, Room 11, at 14:15. Parents, who wish to make use of our aftercare facilities, must please inform us via return . Learners may wear their Parklands College sports uniform and in the interest of security, learners must be signed out when collected. Kindly note that learners must be collected by 17:00, as the College is locked at this time.

6 HOMEWORK ROUTINE The Junior Preparatory makes use of the application, Notability, as a digital diary. The homework sheet must be checked and signed on a daily basis, by the parent. Please note: this includes Aftercare children. Your child will require their own set of stationery for homework purposes. School stationery will remain in the classroom. Tonight you will be receiving your child s homework file. Please file the sheets in the order of the Contents page. Please cut all the flashcards and put them into one small, flat container. This container remains at home. In the other small, flat container, add the words for the week. These words will be found on the weekly homework sheet. This container must be sent to school on a daily basis.

7 POSITIVE REWARD PROGRAMME Learners are rewarded for consistent achievement / progress / positive behaviour with a merit. Once a learner has received 10 merits they will be acknowledged with a certificate in Assembly. Shining Moment certificates are awarded for exceptional achievement / behaviour / initiative and are presented to learners in Assembly. POSITIVE REINFORCEMENT PROGRAMME The educator together with their class sets the classroom rules at the beginning of the year. Educators use positive reinforcement before all else. Level 1 Learners are given a friendly reminder with the consequences i.e. remove from area of work/play, and a second or third reminder may result in moving to Level 2. Level 2 Learners will be given a demerit if the infringement continues. The allocation of 3 demerits will result in moving to Level 3. Level 3 The learner is removed from play time and is required to sit in a break time out. The parents will be ed with details of the behaviour.

8 UNIFORM Learners are readily identifiable by their uniform. Therefore, parents must support the College by ensuring that the uniform is worn correctly and with pride. Learners may wear the College tracksuit (which is a compulsory item) to and from sporting events. The summer and winter uniform should be complete, correctly sized, clean and tidy in appearance. The College blazer must be worn to and from Campus, for assemblies, special occasions and stepping out. New and used College uniforms are available from ARC SPORTSWEAR. SUNBLOCK AND HATS Please apply sunblock to all exposed parts of your child s body before they come to school in the morning. ALL learners MUST wear their school caps when outdoors. The sun is extremely dangerous, so please help us to protect your children. LOST PROPERTY All items of clothing must be clearly labeled with the learner s name and surname. In the event of these labeled items being found, they will be returned to the learner. Items without labels will be placed in the Lost Property box in Room 6.

9 ASSEMBLIES Assemblies take place each Monday at 08:30 in the Amphitheatre during the summer season. In the event of bad weather, and during the winter season, assemblies will take place in the Senior Preparatory Hall. Birthdays are acknowledged in Assembly on a Monday. Birthday books encourage a spirit of giving by donating a book of choice on a learner s birthday. This is a voluntary contribution. BIRTHDAYS Invitations may be handed out provided there is one for every learner. Birthdays are special days and learners may celebrate the day by wearing casual clothes to school. A cupcake, cookie or simple snack for their classmates is appropriate. CAKE SALES Cake sales are held on a Friday. A roster of the dates and classes responsible for providing the treats will be provided in the Junior Preparatory Weekly Blog. Parents who are available to assist on the day are requested to their child s class teacher. TUCK SHOP FACILITIES The College tuck shop operates during break times. Vouchers may be purchased from Reception in order to facilitate a cash-free tuck shop.

10 HOUSES Each learner is assigned to a house upon enrolment. The houses are Oxford (yellow), Yale (red), Harvard (green) and Cambridge (blue). Activities held on a house basis include sporting events, General Knowledge quizzes and outreach projects. ipads Please send your child s ipad to school in the first week, should it still need to be configured by the ICT Department. You will receive notification from your child s class teacher when the ipad is required to be brought to school for use in the classroom. LOCKERS For the safekeeping of possessions and the general neatness of the campus, each learner is assigned a locker in which College bags, sporting gear, books and ipads must be kept. Bags and personal effects may not be left in corridors or public places. Learners will be required to purchase a lock. In addition to their own key, we request that a spare key is given to their class teacher, as well as one to be kept by you for safekeeping.

11 MEDICATION The following guidelines will be followed: All prescribed medication must display the child s name, the date and name of doctor prescribing the medication. Prescribed medication will only be administered by the Receptionist or Principal. Parents must sign a consent form for each dose of prescribed medication. Before medication is given, the child s name and dosage must be checked. Staff must be familiar with how to administer certain medication e.g. Nebulisers and inhalers for asthma. Parents will be asked to give a demonstration. NO medication/substances of any sort (i.e. Panado, creams, homeopathic preparations) will administered by the school unless the situation is life threatening. Medication can unfortunately not be administrated via telephonic permission. Please note: Should your child have a medical condition / allergy / require medication to be administered, kindly Natalie Raffino on nraffino@parklands.co.za by Friday 23 January in order for us to update our records.

12 OUTREACH We have a monthly focus where we reach out to our community and support a number of organisations. We have established a partnership with Ysterplaat Junior Primary School and donate various items of need to them on a regular basis. These initiatives will be communicated to you via the Weekly Blog. OUTINGS A consent form outlining the outings booked for Grade One for 2015 will be sent home in the first week of the quarter. This form will be kept on record and will serve as consent for all the outings listed. Please complete the consent form and return it to your child s class teacher as soon as possible. WEEKLY BLOG AND NEWSLETTER Parents in the Junior Preparatory are informed of weekly news, achievements and upcoming events via the Junior Preparatory Weekly Blog, which is ed on Friday afternoons. The monthly newsletter is filled with information and photographs of past, current and future events, and is a wonderful record of College days. The newsletter is the most up-to-date publication on developments within the College and on Campus.
