1 17 January 2019 Dear Parents and Guardians Welcome to the start of the 2019 school year. I trust you have had a relaxing and enjoyable holiday with family and friends. I would like to extend a warm welcome to our new families joining the Junior School this year. Class teacher notification and start of year arrangements The names of form teachers working with each of the classes will be available on Parent Lounge by Friday 25 January. Term 1 commences for Pre-Prep students on Tuesday 29 January and Prep Year 6 students on Wednesday 30 January. Our classrooms will be open from 8.00am and there will be staff in the playgrounds to welcome you and to guide you to your classroom. Students had the opportunity to meet with their new classmates at the end of last year and have also written a letter to their new class teacher. Teachers have used the information provided in the girls letters to inform their planning. Please bring along all book pack items and swimming gear on this day so your teacher can help you organise them in the classroom. Students will spend time in their classroom with the Form Teacher until 1.30pm getting to know each other and then the Junior School will meet together at a Welcome Back Assembly. Parent information sessions provide an invaluable opportunity to meet with your daughter s Form Teacher and other key members of staff. The sessions will provide an overview of the curriculum, wellbeing structures, co-curricular offerings and other relevant student learning information. Address: 4/498 Scottsdale Drive, Varsity Lakes Phone: Fax: Opening hours: Monday-Friday 8:30am 5:00pm, Saturday (January only) 9:00am 1:00pm The student book packs for students in Prep Years 6 can be ordered online by accessing the School Website/Parent Resources/Network Educational Australia Online Book Ordering/Booklists and selecting your daughter s 2019 year level (existing student). Parents with daughters in Years 1 6 will have the option of collecting the book packs from the supplier or having the book pack delivered to your home. Book packs for students in Prep will be delivered directly to the School. It is recommended that all items are clearly named; text books covered in clear contact and other books in contact, paper covering or with book covers to ensure the book remains in good condition all year. Students are to bring all items in the book pack to school on the first day back in Uniform The Uniform Shop will re-open from Tuesday 22 January every day for parents to purchase uniform items in readiness for the 2019 school year. When preparing for the return to school, please adhere to the uniform requirements as listed below: The tunic should be worn mid-knee. Shoes must be school style and leather, clean and polished. (Buckle-up suitable in Prep Year 2 and lace-ups from Year 3) Hair that is shoulder length or longer must be tied back with a 2cm-wide navy ribbon or navy scrunchie. Sport shoes are to be predominantly white in colour and have soles that will not mark playing surfaces. Earrings, if worn, are to be gold or silver studs or sleepers only. Red play hat is worn in Prep Year 3 and School cap Years 4 6. Year 5 students require a PE Safety Kit which can be purchased from the Uniform Shop. Year 6 students wearing the senior uniform are required to have a School blazer from the beginning of Term 2. Student Leaders will require a blazer from Term 1. All items are to be clearly named. All students in Year 6 will require the School Tracksuit (jacket and pants) for the Canberra Trip in Term 1. ipad and App List The St Hilda s School ipad Program involves all students from Year 4. This specific requirement means that all students in Years 4 to 6 will bring an Apple ipad to school on a daily basis. Please note that the ipad Mini is no longer suitable as it is not compatible with NAPLAN Online. Students are encouraged to have an attachable keyboard to use with the ipad. A number of Apps to support the curriculum will need to be loaded onto the ipad for the start of the school year. This list is available to parents on the ipad Portal, along with much information to support parents and students in the introduction to the ipad Program in the Junior School. This can be accessed on the School Website under Junior/iPad Portal/iTunes U Courses. Parents are encouraged to ensure that their daughter s ipad is identifiable and protected by an appropriate cover. It is important parents consider the level of insurance cover that meets the family s standards and expectations. 3 Curriculum and Assessment Overviews 2019 To support your daughter in her educational journey this year, it would be wonderful if you could chat with her or read her books relating to the topics she will be studying. Any prior knowledge she brings to the classroom will fill her with confidence and can make a big difference to her progress. The Curriculum and Assessment Overviews for 2019 will be available on Parent Lounge and via the St Hilda s School Website. Junior School Camps Year 6 Canberra Trip Monday, 1 April 2019 Thursday, 4 April 2019 Year 4 Camp - Lake Ainsworth / Year 3 Camp - Tyalgum Ridge Wednesday, 16 October 2019 Friday, 18 October 2019 Year 5 Camp Camp Goodenough Monday, 11 November 2019 Wednesday, 13 November 2019 School Banking School Banking will continue to be offered this year to support education on financial literacy which is in the curriculum and to encourage a saving habit. The Commonwealth Bank Program offers a Rewards Program which is designed to encourage children to form the habit of regular savings. School Banking is open to all students from Pre-Prep Year 6 and their siblings. The Commonwealth Bank will conduct an Account Opening Morning where students can register to be part of the program on Wednesday 30 January and Friday 15 February in the Prep Undercroft from 8.00am-9.00am. Please bring along a birth certificate of students wishing to open an account. In order to run the program, we require a number of parent volunteers to assist with processing deposits on Wednesdays between 8.30am and 10.30am. If you are able to assist, please contact Junior School Reception on Parental Volunteers The safety of our students is of upmost importance for the School. Procedures and policies relating to Child Protection now require all volunteers working within Anglican Schools to undergo an induction relating to the responsibility they share in safeguarding students. Available on the School website under Governance/Safeguarding Students Policies, is a range of policy and procedure documents to inform parents. As part of the St Hilda s School community, all volunteers are required to read and acknowledge their understanding of their responsibilities as a volunteer. This includes parents and grandparents who assist with classroom activities, reading, School Banking, School discos, excursions and the like. All parents who wish to volunteer in 2019 are required to complete the Acknowledgement of Understanding Forms on pages 3 and 4 of the Safeguarding Our Students Student Policy and Procedures Guide (this document will be ed to parents) and returned to Junior School Reception. We value the time parents volunteer and the strong community connections this time fosters. We know that you share an appreciation of all that is being done to assist young people to feel safe and know that adults in

4 their school will listen and report any matters of concern to those who can assist. If you have any questions or require any assistance in completing the above in order to volunteer, please do not hesitate to contact Junior School Reception or Before and After School Care bookings All parents who are intending to utilise this service are required to complete an Outside School Hours Care (OSHC) booking form for 2019 and return this to Junior School Reception prior to the first day of care.
