Conference Image Conference Aims To enable us to gain a deeper understanding of and commitment to the Marist approach to education, and to help us apply it in our schools. To further build a sense of unity and common identity within the new Province of Australia. The name Marist didn t exist before It was in the great Marian city of Lyon, France, in the chapel perched on Fourvière hill, that the founding Marists, Saint Marcellin among them, pledged themselves to respond to what they felt was a call from Mary to share in her everlasting work of being with the Church as it came to birth. In the same way the Society of Jesus was formed to renew the world and the Church after the Reformation, with its members known as Jesuits, the Society of Mary, to be known as Marists, would commit themselves, in the wake of the French Revolution, to renew the world and the Church in Mary s way. The Fourvière chapel is a popular place of pilgrimage and is known as a place of grace and blessings there is hardly an empty space on its walls, laden as they are with plaques placed in thanksgiving for special graces received. Our conference logo takes its inspiration from the oil lamps that to this day burn at the shrines on Fourvière; it is a reminder to us of the grace and blessings that have come to us as people who bear the name of Mary and undertake God s mission in her way. To provide an opportunity for the Priorities and Directions which arose at the 2012 Mission Assembly in Mittagong to be discussed and expanded upon, so that these might be more successfully achieved. To enable the insights and directions which arise in the first Chapter of the Province of Australia to be shared with lay Marists from across the nation, so that we might take these to heart and inspire those in our schools to act upon these. To help us discern how we might continue St Marcellin s work with even greater effectiveness. To enable those in the extended Australian Marist family to meet and share their experiences and insights with one another. 2

Message from the Conference Chair The 2013 Marist Schools Conference promises to be an historic event for Australians who follow in St. Marcellin s footsteps. It will be the first large national gathering of educators from the Marist Brothers Province of Australia, recently inaugurated on 8 December, It will also be our first national conference intended for a broad range of educators from schools associated with the Marist Brothers. The conference theme, He Gave Us the Name of Mary, is borrowed from the name of the first Circular by Brother Emili Turú, the Superior General of the Marist Brothers. This Circular addresses numerous challenges and opportunities which the Marist Brothers face globally at this time, and its messages certainly resonate in the Australian context. Since Brother Emili s Circular responded to many of the issues facing the Australian Marist community, we were delighted when he accepted the invitation to join us at this inaugural conference. It is of great significance that Brother Emili will be joining us; we look forward to his presence and to hearing his reflections. Our current circumstances are indeed challenging. However, it is hard to imagine how difficult it was for Marcellin, soon after the French Revolution, with all the upheaval and anti-religious sentiment that then swirled around. Regardless, with Mary as his inspiration, his work has succeeded in making Jesus known and loved to many, across ten generations. It is our privilege to continue this work. Whether Brother or lay, we all have been given the name of Mary. It is our role to build the Marian face of the Church, and therefore to love the young people in our care. Finally, thanks are due to the members of the Organising Committee who have worked hard to make the Conference a helpful experience for all who attend. Karen Davies (Trinity College, Lismore) Brother David Hall (Marcellin College, Randwick) Donna McLaughlin (Trinity College, Auburn) Peter McNamara (Marist Schools Australia) Brother Neville Solomon (Marist Schools Australia) Brother Bill Sullivan (St Augustine s College, Cairns) I look forward to sharing this time with you in Cairns. 5 Speaker Information He Gave Us the Name of Mary Brother Emili Turu, Superior General, Marist Brothers, Rome Brother Emili is the present Superior General of the Marist Brothers, and so the successor of Saint Marcellin. He is Catalonian by birth, and served in various roles in education (primary, secondary and tertiary) and in the formation of Brothers in Spain before being appointed as Provincial. He was elected to the General Council of the Marist Brothers at the General Chapter of 2001, and as Superior General at the Chapter of Abstract: To build a Church with a Marian face is something all Christians are invited to do. But we, as Marists, are invited to manifest in an original and specific manner the presence of Mary in the life of the Church and of humankind. This is the originality of our vocation, this is what specifies our contribution to the Church and to society, not only for what we do, but also for the way we do it and who we are. Our existence in the Church and in society has meaning in itself, without the need to resort to our specific function. Magnificat: Jesus Foreshadowed in Mary s Magnificat Dr Michele Connolly rsj, Catholic Institute of Sydney, NSW Michele Connolly is a Sister of St Joseph of Lochinvar in the Hunter Valley, NSW. From 1976 she taught in secondary schools of the Maitland diocese. In the late 80s she began theology studies, first at the Yarra Theological Union in Melbourne and then at the Catholic Theological Union, Chicago in 1990, graduating with M. A. (Theol.). In the early 90s she taught New Testament at Catholic Theological Union, Hunter s Hill and in many parishes and spiritual renewal centres. After returning from studies for the PhD in New Testament at the Graduate Theological Union, in Berkeley, California, she joined the faculty of the Catholic Institute of Sydney in 2001 to teach New Testament Studies. Abstract: In the Gospel of Luke the mother of Jesus is portrayed for us in depth. In her famous prayer, the Magnificat, we hear echoes back and into Jewish history and promises forward in to the life of her son, Jesus. Mary, bearing the son of God, prays as her Jewish predecessor, Hannah, did when God gifted Hannah with a son. As a son true to his mother s heart, Jesus in Luke announces himself to the world in the words of Isaiah the prophet. These words of Isaiah on Jesus lips are remarkably one in spirit with Mary s Magnificat. Luke models for us how our spiritual inheritance from the past becomes flesh in the living moment of our present. 5

Speaker Information - Cont. New Evangelisation: Catholic Identity Formed in a Frontier Space Dr Paul Sharkey, Director of Catholic Education, SA Dr Paul Sharkey is the Director of Catholic Education in the Archdiocese of Adelaide and Executive Officer of the South Australian Commission for Catholic Schools. Paul s PhD was a case study of teacher responses to a charism project in a Catholic school. He has also completed postgraduate programs in theology, education, program evaluation and educational leadership and management. Paul believes that Catholic schools are confronted with challenging identity issues at this time and that it is a privilege to work with colleagues to rise to work on this challenge together in mission for the sake of the Gospel. Abstract: New Evangelisation challenges school leaders to develop forms of evangelisation that are new in terms of their ardour, methods and expression. The New Evangelisation project can be considered as presenting three challenges. Firstly, our practice needs to unfold as a dialogue that is explicitly Catholic even as it is more engaged with the attitudes and beliefs of school community members. The second challenge is to keep striving for post-critical belief. The challenge here is to engage seriously with the many issues and difficulties our people have with Catholic faith but to keep moving into a post-critical space where new forms of connection and belonging can grow. The final challenge is create new forms of Catholic belief and practice which are genuinely Catholic even as they are more culturally resonant. Marist - Our Way of Being Catholic Peter McNamara, Senior Consultant, Marist Schools Australia Peter McNamara studied for three years at the Catholic University of Louvain in Belgium and in particular with the Faculty of Theology in the development of an understanding of the Identity of Catholic institutions. Peter now leads ongoing research between the University and Marist Schools Australia on the ways in which Marist charism and spirituality enhances the Catholic identity of Marist Schools. Brother Paul Creevey fms, Principal, St Teresa s Catholic College, Noosaville Brother Paul Creevey FMS is currently the Principal of St Teresa s Catholic College in Noosaville, Queensland. Brother Paul holds a Masters Degree in Theology examining the spirituality of Marcellin Champagnat in the context of the French school of spirituality. In 2012, St Teresa s College participated in the Catholic Identity Project and he will share the results of the research with the Conference. Abstract: Marist Leaders intuit that a vibrant Marist school culture provides rich opportunities to enhance both the mission and Catholic identity of the school. In order to explore this intuition Marist Schools Australia, in cooperation with the Catholic University of Louvain, is developing a questionnaire to measure the strength of Marist characteristics in schools and explore any correlation with the results from the Enhancing Catholic Identity Project surveys. In this presentation, Brother Paul Creevey will present the survey results for St Teresa s Catholic College and the interpretation of the results made by the College leadership team. Peter McNamara will present the Marist Scale, being the research project of Brother Peter Pemble, currently studying in Leuven. 6

AUSTRALIAN MARIST SCHOOLS - CONFERENCE 2013 HE GAVE US THE NAME OF MARY JULY PULLMAN CAIRNS INTERNATIONAL, QUEENSLAND The Australian Marist Community Facilitator: Joe McCarthy, Director of Australian Lay Marists Joe has a work background in teaching and pastoral care. He has been Religious Education / Faith Development Coordinator, and has also had non-teaching roles such as College Chaplain and Community Support Worker for schools in and around Melbourne. He is married to Kath, and has three children aged 10, 8 and 6. He is currently the Director of Lay Marists for the Province of Australia. Abstract: Joe will work with a small group of other Marists to create an interactive dialogue. Various perspectives will be shared about what draws us into the Australian Marist Community, what we find ourselves doing, what sustains us and what leaves us asking for more. Those gathered will hear from a young person who has graduated from a Marist school in recent years, a teacher who has uncovered a passion through immersion experiences, a Brother who is discovering new ways to be connected and a tale of starting from scratch from a Marist Youth Care worker. Finally, those gathered will hear where things are in relation to the establishment of an Australian Marist Association, and scaffolds for leadership and participation that are being worked on across all ministries and communities in Australia. Towards Nairobi 2014, an Opportunity to Shape Our Marist Future Brother Michael Green, National Director of Marist Schools Australia; Executive Director of Marist Ministries Brother Michael Green has the twin roles of National Director of Marist Schools Australia and Executive Director of Ministries for the Province of Australia. He has been involved in Marist education for almost forty years as a teacher, school principal, and province administrator. Michael s studies have been in the fields of education, history and theology. His doctoral research explored the relationship between the sociological concept of organisational culture and the theological dynamic of charism. He has a particular interest in fostering dialogue around the ways in which the great spiritual families of the Church such as the Marists can contribute to the renewal and effectiveness of God s mission in the world. Abstract: Representatives from around the Marist world will gather in Nairobi, Kenya, in February 2014 for the second International Marist Mission Assembly. The first was in Mendes, Brazil, in This session will be given over to some preparation for the Assembly. It will be the principal opportunity for leaders of Australian Marist schools to contribute to the content and focus of what will be a quite significant gathering for Marists in shaping our international directions over the next decade. 7

Speaker Information - Cont. We Are the Champagnat Figures Brother Jeff Crowe, Provincial, Marist Brothers, Australia After working in Bougainville and Solomon Islands ( ), Jeffrey became the first District Leader of Papua New Guinea / Solomon Islands ( ). After post-graduate studies he worked in Province administration ( ). He was a member of the General Council of the Marist Brothers ( ), during which time he held responsibilities in Africa and was the final editor of In the Footsteps of Marcellin Champagnat. In , he worked in formation in India. In , he served as Rector of the Marist Brothers Asia-Pacific post-novitiate centre in Manila, Philippines. In late 2007 he became Provincial of Australia in December Abstract: A reflection inspired by our Marist education document, In the Footsteps of Marcellin Champagnat: In a special way our school leaders are challenged to be people of vision: to articulate and live by our core Marist values and lead others in living them. More than anyone else, they are the Champagnat figures for the school community, leading with confidence and optimism, and modelling Marist apostolic spirituality. (Article 164) Where to from Here? What do you do with the material you engage with at a conference? There will no doubt be some concrete, practical ideas you will take away but it is also important to capture and hold the new insights that will influence the way you lead in the future. This session will involve reflection and discussion aimed at helping us refine what we want to hold in our minds and our hearts as we return to our schools. A1 To Teach Children You Must Love Them First: You Must Love Them All Equally. (St Marcellin) Peter Chalkley, Director, McAuley Champagnat Program, Peter White, Co-Principal, Notre Dame College, Karen Fox, Deputy Principal, Notre Dame College, Adrian Drane, Deputy Principal, Notre Dame College Drawing inspiration from the life and vision of Marcellin Champagnat and Catherine McAuley, the McAuley Champagnat Programme of Notre Dame College, Shepparton, Victoria, was established in 2005 to meet the educational needs of disengaged and at risk students in the Greater Shepparton region of Victoria. Some seven years later, this innovative Programme that has been recognised nationally, is witnessing extraordinary success in seeing youth transform their lives from a situation of helplessness to a future full of potential. This workshop/seminar will explore the history and development of the Programme to include the barriers to education experienced by many young people and the holistic approaches designed to effectively provide a valid and authentic alternative educational pathway for our students. A2 More Engagement in Year 9 RE Ian Laing, Religious Education Coordinator, Marcellin College, Randwick Many RE programs are content dense and students seem disengaged and disinterested. There s little time for regular opportunities that help students develop habits in prayer. At Marcellin Randwick the curriculum was compacted, the staff trained, the prayer room renovated and now boys meditate, engage in Lectio Divina and they love it! How did this all happen? 8

Workshops Monday 29 July pm A3 Evangelization and School Immersion Experiences Brother Justin Golding, Luke McMahon, Brother Al Sherry Schools in Queensland and the Northern Rivers present the rationale behind the change from understanding immersions as an aspect of a school s service program to an important component of the opportunities for evangelization of staff. Given this change of paradigm, what are the implications for leadership? Hear from those who are leading this change. Trinity College Lismore, St Peter Claver College, St Teresa s College, and Marist College Ashgrove. A4 Youth Ministry in Today s Marist School Nicki Pitt, Remar Coordinator, Province of Australia Marist Youth Ministry is being promoted as a priority for Marists in all Provinces of the Institute. It is being seen as a really effective way of engaging in our primary task of making Jesus known and loved. In the Province of Australia, we are putting significant resources into Remar as our school-level way of doing peer-based MYM. As a discipleship and leadership programme, many schools are finding it to be a really effective means of developing the faith and the leadership capacity of senior students and, importantly, the staff who work with them. In this session, some of this year s Remar Ministry Team will speak of how Remar has changed their lives, and their experience of ministering to senior students. Conference participants with Remar already operating will also be able to share their experience of the programme, and its impact on the staff and culture of their schools. A5 Newman College Responds - Meeting the Needs of Students on the Margins in a Variety of Ways, Within Mainstream School Rob Crothers, Head of Secondary, Newman College, Perth Through a range of educational initiatives, Newman College seeks to implement the vision of Marist Education as outlined in The Footsteps of Marcellin Champagnat (#132) to give special attention to the personal capacity of weak and vulnerable students. We create learning situations where each one can succeed and is affirmed. These initiatives cater for students with a high level of intellectual/academic ability, students with diagnosed and defined physical, neurological, emotional conditions which require support in mainstream and those students who wish to culminate their secondary school experience with programs which provide a transition to apprenticeships, traineeships, further training or relevant employment at the conclusion of Year 11 or 12. A6 The National Standards for Teachers & Principals: A Marist Way of Addressing the Standards Richard Sidorko, Headmaster, Marist College Canberra This session will explore Marist College Canberra s approach to achieving the national agenda of improving teacher quality through its own Quality Marist Teacher Project. In 2010 Marist College Canberra embarked on a whole staff process of addressing in an integrated and collaborative way quality teaching, professional learning and teacher performance review. Marist Canberra s initiative marries neatly with the National Professional Standards for Teachers and Principals and draws its inspiration from the the distinctive pedagogical approach of Marcellin and the first Marists. 9
