1 College News Director of Senior School Newsletter May 25, 2017 No.14 Senior School mid-year update In just a few weeks, we will arrive at the mid-point in the school year again! Term 2 seems to be passing by extremely quickly; it s difficult to believe that this week we have finished Unit 3 and are now beginning Unit has been a busy year so far. Sometimes, College life is hectic but there should always be time to reflect on and celebrate the achievements of our students and the positive contributions they make to the College Community. VCE and Year 10 Year 10 and 11 students are working towards their end of semester exams and Year 12 students (and those year 11s studying a Unit 3 & 4 subject) have the General Achievement Task coming up on 14 June. The GAT is an extremely important assessment tool used by VCAA when final subject scores are awarded and we are confident that our students will aim to achieve their very best on the test this year. Year 11 have been involved in a study skills session with external providers, Elevate, who also ran a parent information session earlier this term. Year 12 VCE students will have an opportunity to work through some important and practical study skills tips with Elevate later this term and it is hoped that, in the future, we will be able to engage more regularly with the company whose presenters are all university students, with very recent first-hand experience of VCE. Raising Achievement At Mordialloc College we value personal achievement and have been working alongside students to focus on raising achievement in school. It is our aim that every Mordialloc student will leave school at the end of Year 12 having achieved their best; that every student can look back on their time here knowing that they were given many opportunities and lots of support to do well. Having listened to student feedback last year, we have changed timelines to give support with study skills earlier in the year. We have introduced a tutoring program for VCE students every Friday from 1-4pm, whereby students can access help, support and guidance from a number of paid university students who excelled in particular areas of the curriculum. This opportunity has been taken up by some students who have given feedback on how valuable talking to young people with recent VCE experience really is. This will continue to be offered to students throughout the year as a way of providing additional and different support to that of teachers. Year 10 Work Experience Year 10 students completed their work experience from May. It was a positive week overall, with lots of fantastic feedback from employers. It was lovely to hear how mature and hard-working our students are, and to know that they represented themselves and the College positively throughout the week. For many students, their experience confirmed their current pathway ideas, whereas for others it made them question their ideas and perhaps start rethinking future plans. 2 Immunisation P a ge 2 Cont from p1 time she dedicated to organising this busy week, and to Karen Barker for the support she gave to Jane in processing the copious amounts of paperwork involved with work experience placements. VCAL VCAL students have been working on a range of projects this year. In Senior VCAL, there have been projects on Health, Politics and Conservation and there has been an excursion to take part in a barista course. Intermediate VCAL students have worked on an Art and Culture project as well as Moving Out. They also attended the barista course and have visited Queen Vic Market, NGV, McCLelland Sculpture Park and taken a tour of Street Art in Melbourne. Our new Foundation VCAL has given students an opportunity to re-enact TV s The Block by renovating their classroom and they have worked on an RSPCA Animal Welfare project as well as in the Kitchen Garden. They also took part in a workshop at Bunnings. All VCAL students were invited to attend a Careers Expo which they found extremely interesting and informative. Thanks to Ms Nickou and the VCAL teaching team for organising so many amazing opportunities and making our VCAL program the success it is. Elevate will also be in school in July to work with our Year 12 VCAL students, focusing on interview skills and 2017 Newsletter No.14 techniques that will be of great use to them as they move closer to the world of work. Senior Formal Students in Year 11 and 12 are looking forward to this year s Senior Formal. Already, conversations about dresses, hair and make-up and transport options are being overheard in D1 at lunchtimes. This is one of the highlights of the school calendar and it is always a privilege to be part of the evening with so many amazing young people. Of course, as this is a school event, we know that you will continue to uphold the high expectations we have of you to represent Mordialloc College proudly, whilst having fun in a safe and responsible manner. We are confident that this will be a wonderful night which, for students and staff, is always a memorable occasion. 4 Community Notice Board 2017 ReBOOT Campaign Do you have a pair of perfectly good footy boots lying around that don t fit anymore? Why not donate them to ReBoot? Mordialloc College will be joining the Port Adelaide Football Club and the Kingston Koorie Mob in the 2017 ReBoot Campaign, as part of an effort to give back to Indigenous Communities. In order to help all you have to do is bring your old footy boots or runners to the Year 7 Learning Centre. All shoes will then be distributed by Port Adelaide Football Club s Aboriginal Program to Indigenous Children in need. Last year the ReBoot Campaign received a massive win scoring 545 donations from a number of schools and sporting organisations in the area. Let s kick even more goals this year! Let s reduce waste and help our Indigenous Communities out! Let s stand up and Reboot!
