1 Bunbury Senior High School Going Forward Together to Broad Horizons Dress Code: Parent Information Booklet 2017
2 BUNBURY SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL General Information The following policy has been formulated in line with the School Education Act In summary:: 1. School communities have the right to establish uniforms for their schools. 2. Consultation with students, parents, staff and community representatives will occur. 3. Grounds for exemption include health, ethnic and religious considerations and are negotiated with the Principal. 4. Uniform plans will outline aspects of the personal presentation of students during school hours and when they represent the school out of hours. 5. The uniform policy will consider: (a) (b) (c) (d) (e) Clean and appropriate presentation of students. Safety factors. Items that are non-gender specific. Contemporary items and allow for choice. Affordability. 6. Acceptance of enrolment assumes an agreement that the enrolling student will dress within the guidelines. (If the code is unacceptable, parents have a right to apply for admission to a school where the uniform reflects their preference). 7. Students who regularly do not conform to uniform may be removed from participating in non- essential school activities. Eg. Country Week, School Ball, sporting teams, and end of year functions. The benefits of dress requirements include: promoting safety of students through easier identification; keeping costs of clothing within reasonable limits for parents; and assisting students to learn the importance of appropriate presentation. Being suitably groomed is part of the process by which students learn to engage with employers and the community. In this context denim is not appropriate in a school s dress requirements.
3 BUNBURY SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL Procedures for Students not in uniform It is understood that infrequently students will be unable to wear uniform. On these occasions students are required to report to the Student Services Centre by 8.30am [or upon arrival to school]. Student Services has access to a limited range of school uniform items. If available, students will be offered an alternative clothing item and they will be expected to wear that alternative. The student will leave the inappropriate clothing item in Student Services. The student will return at the end of the day, return the borrowed item and collect their personal belongings. Refusal to follow this process may result in the need for immediate parental support and other consequences for the student. When necessary, parents will be contacted and clothing will be required to be brought to school to allow the student to return to classes. Letters will be sent home to inform parents/caregivers as issues arise. On occasions, a Temporary Uniform Pass will be provided to allow students to wear appropriate non- school uniform for that day only. APPROVED GARMENTS Shirts BSHS Navy Blue Junior Polo BSHS Navy Blue Senior Polo Any other approved shirt with school crest or name (Eg.
