Contact Person Mr Chris Brown Principal s Foreword Introduction Our Lady of the Sacred Heart Primary School is a co-educational Catholic school in the Brisbane suburb of Darra. The school currently has 471 students enrolled in 19 classes from Prep to Year 7. OLSH school has an ethos based on Gospel Values. Our focus is showing respect for each other. We are a multicultural community that celebrates the richness of a variety of cultures. Whilst our school has a heavy emphasis on the teaching of Numeracy and Literacy and ensuring all children have the foundational knowledge preparing them for a wide scope of learning, we also value the teaching of the performing arts subjects. With a whole school musical biennially and instrumental and drama lessons happening in school time, children continue to grow in confidence through a variety of subjects. 3 How Information and Communication Technologies are used to assist learning In and more than $ was spent installing ceiling-mounted data projectors in 17 classrooms and purchasing a notebook computer for each teacher, including specialist teachers, and the administration staff. In late and in 2011 a further $ has been spent upgrading the network with new switches, fibre optic cabling and wireless network access points for the whole school. Money for these projects has been obtained from the school s operating budget, the resource grant and P&F funds. Major software purchases in the last 2 years have included licences for Heulab Fun with Construction and Fun with Mindbook and for the online interactive Maths program Stepping Stones. Social climate Our Lady of the Sacred Heart is a multi-cultural school with more than 30 cultures/nationalities represented in the student body. The Parish of Darra-Jindalee which is the main catchment for the school includes the suburbs/localities of Darra, the Centenary suburbs and new developments such in areas such as Sinnamon Park and Seventeen Mile Rocks. This is a very diverse socio-economic community ranging from working class families to those in professional occupations. 4 Involving parents in their child s education Strong partnerships have been established between school and Parents and Friends and the school community through a variety of events including formal meetings as well as parent nights; through survey instruments and Celebrations of Learning. Parents of Prep students are interviewed in the first week of the school year. The other Year levels hold a Parent Information night early in Term 1. Parent-teacher interviews for all Year levels are held at the end of Term 1. Each class conducts a 'Celebration of Learning' presentation once a year either during the day or in the evening. This provides an opportunity for the students to showcase their work to their parents and families. Parents are offered training in the 'Support-a-Reader' program. These parents then volunteer to assist teachers by listening to children read.
