Day for all Elementary Schools Yearbook 2015 The Yearbook looks fantastic...students who ordered this year s edition will receive their copy the week of June 10th A Very Fond Farewell! This is a very big year for Best Wishes and Fond Farewells. Mrs. Croker, Mrs. Draper, Mrs. Landsberg, Mrs. Robar and Ms Taylor are all retiring and moving on to new adventures. We wish them well in their future endeavours. They will certainly be missed. 2 PAGE 2 Library News HIGHVIEW HIGHLIGHTS VOLUME 11, ISSUE 10 Eco Team We are beginning our quest to collect overdue and misplaced library books. Please be sure to check your house for any stray library books. Students should also check for lost text books from previous years. Grade 8 students are reminded that their library record follows them to high school. If there are any outstanding items from elementary school, students will not be able to sign out materials from the high school resource centre. A replacement charge will be issued for any lost or damaged books. If a lost book is subsequently found, a refund can only be issued during the current school year. All library books must be returned to the library by JUNE 12. The Eco Team continues to sell compostable bags for your under the counter green bins. The cost is $20.00 for 160 bags. If you would like to order, please complete the attached order form. The proceeds will be used to subsidize the cost of a filtered water station for the school. Heart and Stroke Warm Weather Planning Ahead We are proud to announce that Highview P.S. hosted another very successful Jump Rope for Heart and Hoops for Heart fundraising event for the Heart and Stroke Foundation. We raised $8,392.35! Thank you to everyone who participated and who sponsored participants. Thank you prizes have been distributed to eligible students. We are hoping for continued sunny weather during the month of June. Please remember to send your children to school with hats, sunscreen and reusable water bottles. Please also remind your children that despite the heat, beach wear is not appropriate for school. Please refer to our Dress Code in our School Handbook (located in the front of the school s student agenda and on our website). Specifically, students are expected to wear clothes that: are appropriate in size, specifically shorts and skirts which should be at least mid thigh; do not expose the midriff skin between the top and the waist band of pants, shorts or skirts; cover all undergarments at all times (no spaghetti strap tops or crop tops and pants must cover boxer shorts). Thank you to everyone for all your support in making this a successful and eventful year at Highview P.S. We are all looking forward to the excitement of the events in June followed by a long wonderful summer. You will receive your child s report card on Wednesday, June 24th. If for any reason, other than graduation, your children will not be returning to Highview P.S. in September, please let us know. We require this information whether they are leaving permanently or just extending a vacation beyond the first day of school. If neighbours move in over the summer and enquire about registration, please let them know that information will be posted on the front door of the school directing them to a central location where the registration process will be taken care of during the summer.

3 HIGHVIEW HIGHLIGHTS PAGE 3 This year we would like to thank our volunteers at a special breakfast which will take place on Tuesday, June 9th from 7:30 to 8:20 a.m. in the staff room. If you have volunteered in any capacity this year, please come and join us. We appreciate all the jobs you do including driving to sporting events, escorting groups on field trips, organizing and handing out pizza and pitas, being part of the School Council, reading with our students, organizing the graduation,... the list goes on and on. We will not be sending out personalized invitations this year, please know that you are welcome- we don t want to miss anyone! ECO Garden As you may have noticed, our Eco Garden is beginning to take shape in front of the school. Thank you to everyone who has come out to help with the planting and weeding. We are pleased to announce that the garden will be dedicated to the memory of former student David Leeper. Class Placements Thank you to everyone who provided input into class placements for next school year. We appreciate your input; however, please do not consider it a guarantee of a particular placement. We will certainly take your input into consideration, along with several other factors. Organization, teacher assignments and class placements will not be finalized until the final week of the summer vacation. Students will find out their class placement on the first day of school in September. The Sports Report The Area Track & Field meet will take place on Tuesday, June 9th at Dr. G.W. Williams S.S. (Rain Date: Wednesday, June 10th) Those who qualify at the Area Meet will compete at the Regional Track & Field meet which will take place on Tuesday, June 16th (Rain Date: Wednesday, June 17th) The Junior Girls Basketball team ended their season with a strong effort at the Regional Championships. The team finished 4th out of 160 teams in the Region and finished the season with 20 wins and only 3 losses. The badminton team played well at the Area championships Thank you to parent coach Bill Maron for coaching our Girls Basketball teams. His time and talent were very much appreciated. Thank you also to all the teachers who coached and supervised teams throughout the year.

The School Council would like to thank all of the parent volunteers, the staff, and administration who have contributed during the year. The pizza program, the dance-a-thon, gift baskets, Spring Fair and so many other initiatives.. We are very fortunate to have such a great community. A big thank you goes out to the volunteers who stepped up to help out with the Pizza program! This program would not exist without your help. Watch for our notice in the September newsletter. 6 June 1, 2015 Dear Parents/Guardians, As a result of the current job action affecting elementary schools across the province and in York Region, the planned early release for students on June 25 is cancelled. On Thursday, June 25, 2015, schools will be open and classroom instruction will continue for the entire normal school day. Friday, June 26, 2015 will remain a PA Day. If your child is eligible for school transportation services, school buses and taxi services will continue according to the typical full day schedule. The school board has communicated this scheduling change to in-school child care centres, including before and after care providers. Please check with your provider directly to confirm arrangements for this date. We recognize that this may cause some inconvenience. 7 The Eco Team is working to make money to purchase a Water Station for the school. The water from the station will provide a wonderful way for our students to fill reusable water bottles with pure, refreshing water. The team is raising money through the sale of 100% Compostable Garbage Bags, suitable for use in your under-the-sink compost pails.
