Thank you also for including other students as you worked with your child. Not everyone can attend due to work and other commitments so I appreciate the inclusiveness shown across the school. Our focus for the day was Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM). These key learning areas allow students to build and develop many skills that will be needed as they navigate their lives well into the second half of this century. Skills such as problem solving and creative thinking will be critical to meet the changes they will see in their life time. Add to these being able to work as part of a group - a valued attribute for many employers. If you think back to 1918 you will understand the change that has occurred since that time. If you think forward 10 years our students will be aged years old what will have changed by that time? (The first smartphones only appeared about 10 years ago). I thought I d share an exchange between a group of four Year 4 students I worked with. It loses something without the facial expression, the peripheral talk and seeing the actions but it sums up what we are trying to do problem solving skills (trial and error, offering ideas, considering other ideas, visualising), creative thinking and working as a group (including others, listening to ideas, offering your thoughts, working together, celebrating success). The students were building a bridge that could carry a weight they only had a limited number of pieces of paper and sticky tape. What if we did it this way? (Demonstrating) Hmmm not sure that will work (As they tried to make it fit) What about if we turn it upside down? That s a great idea let s try it That s better but how are we going to connect it to that part? If you put this across there and another across there it should stay (Demonstrating they then add in two new bits) Hang on we need another bit Same size? Yes (As they cut another bit) What do you think Zoe? If we put another piece of tape here it might work (Another piece is taped in) Yesssss it worked! Happy dance (As the group did a little happy dance)

4 NAIDOC Day Next Friday 17 th August we will be holding our NAIDOC day. The National Aboriginal and Islanders Day Observance Committee s theme this year is Because of her, we can. The theme recognises the significant role Aboriginal and Islander women have played in the culture, history and survival of Australia s first peoples. On our day of recognition students will be involved in a range of activities designed to build cultural and historical knowledge for all students. A deeper understanding of Aboriginal and Islander culture and history will be important for our students as they move forward in to the future. Thank you to Mrs Coe and our Aboriginal Education team for their organisation of the day. Students may wear red, yellow, black, blue, green or white on the day. ICAS Maths Competition Students who have entered the ICAS Maths competition will sit the tests next Tuesday. Good luck to those students. Maths Olympiad Good luck to our Stage 3 students as they take on the next round of the maths Olympiad next week. Snow Sports Our snow sports team competed during the recent holidays in the regional interschool snow sports event. Congratulations to Jet and Remy on their performance. Jet came 24 th and Remy came 10 th in the Alpine event and Jet was 32 nd and Remy 13 th Cross event. Remy s result in the Alpine event means she qualifies for the state championships. in the Skier Both Jet and Remy were selected for the Thredbo Development Squad. Congratulations to both students not bad for living on the beach and a long way from the snow. Football (Soccer) Good luck to our Open Girls Football team as they take on Warnervale PS in the 5 th round of the State PSSA Knockout next week. Soccer 5s Good luck to our Soccer 5s teams as they head off to the Central Coast tournament next week. Cross Country Congratulations to our four runners who represented not only our school but also the Met North Region at the NSW PSSA State Cross Country Carnival at Eastern Creek. Our students were competing against the best runners from across NSW. Luke ran 4th in the 8/9 yr boys event. (A fourth place at state would normally qualify the student for nationals but there isn t a 8/9 event at that level). Sienna came 35th in the 11 years, Tyla 23rd in the 8/9 years, Layla 46th in the 8/9 years. Baby Boom Congratulations to Mr & Mrs Lowe on the birth of their daughter Savannah last week. Congratulations to Mr & Mrs Byrne on the birth of their son Bodhi.

5 Rumbalara Last week our Stage 2 students attended excursions to Rumbalara reserve as part of our environmental studies programs. I had an from one of the staff from Rumbalara Environmental Education Centre to let me know how great our students are not only for their manners and behaviour but also for the way they engaged with the learning.
