4 REPORT ON TWO-DAY CITIZENSHIP TRAINING CAMP Introduction Keeping in view the dream of realizing excellence in education in general and teacher education in particular, the Department of Teacher Education, Central University of Kashmir (CUK) organized a Two-Day Citizenship Training Camp (CTC) for Student Teachers at Ganderbal on 10 th & 11 th Aug The Two-Day Citizenship Training Camp received active support from Govt. College of Physical Education, Ganderbal (J&K) in terms of providing physical infrastructure for successful completion of the same. The CTC was organized with the aim of achieving the following objectives: 1. To promote general awareness regarding health, hygiene and environment among the masses. 2. To create awareness about the social responsibility among the citizens. 3. To appreciate the significance of Community living. 4. To develop team spirit and leadership qualities among the student teachers. 5. To develop skills associated with self-defence among the student teachers. The first day was divided into three sessions viz: Inaugural session, Midsession and Afternoon Session. Inaugural Session The inaugural session began with the recitation of some verses from Holy Quran by Mr. Shabir Ahmad Dar a B.Ed. student teacher followed by Naat-e-Rasool by Gh. Hassan Wani, an inservice student teacher Prof. Nighat Basu, the Convener for the session, delivered a Welcome Speech. In her address, she welcomed all the dignitaries present on and off the dice besides the faculty and students of department of education/teacher education, Central University of Kashmir. Prof. Basu, while welcoming Prof. N.A. Nadeem, the Hon ble dean School of Education, CUK, talked at length about the instrumental role played by Prof. Nadeem in establishing Department of Teacher

5 Education in CUK. In her speech, she also remarked that no committee is complete without Prof. Nadeem. Prof. Basu also welcomed other dignitaries including Dr. Fayaz Ahmad Nika Directorate of Students Welfare, CUK, Mr. Mushtaq Ahmad Azad Incharge Govt. College of Physical Education, Ganderbal, Dr. Syed Zahoor Ahmad Geelani the Organizer of this Camp and last but not the least Mr. Arshad Mehraj, Public Relations Officer, CUK. Prof. N.A. Nadeem, the Hon ble Dean & Head, School of Education, CUK graced the occasion as Guest of Honour. In his Introductory remarks, Prof. Nadeem highlighted the leading role played by Hon ble Vice Chancellor, Prof. Mehraj-ud-Din Mir in establishing Department of Teacher Education in CUK. Keeping into consideration the aims and objectives of this Two-Day CTC, Prof. Nadeem spoke at length about various dimensions of Citizenship Education and its relevance especially within the context of multicultural nature of Indian society. He observed that the CTC is conducted strictly within the framework of National Council for Teacher Education (NCTE) norms and regulations. In his address, Prof. Nadeem expressed his views about the nature of relationship between Education and Society. He observed that Education is a Social Institution and instrumental in bringing Social Change rather Transformation. He also

6 emphasized the role of classroom students assembly in creating opportunities for students to become participants in positive social change or transformation. He remarked that education is the most important institution in which all are charged with the duty of contributing something significant toward bringing social transformation. While elaborating upon the role of education in creating and maintaining a particular type of government regime/dispensation, Prof. Nadeem talked about monarchy, autocracy, totalitarian and democratic setup of governance. He observed that the strength of our nation lies in its diversity and its constitution is equal to the task to maintain rather enrich it. He further remarked that, revisiting the constitution is totally unfortunate. Prof. Nadeem reiterated the fact that various committees and commissions emphasized the role of education in inculcating the values associated with democracy, socialism, secularism and citizenship. In his address, Prof. Nadeem quoted Bernard Kirk to emphasize the role of CTC as a

7 community outreach/extension programme which is supposed to be tailored to satisfy local needs of the surrounding community. He also emphasized the importance of Morning Assembly in inculcating desirable values among the participants especially the students. Prof. Nadeem emphasized the three ingredients of citizenship education viz, 1. Knowledge; 2. Skills and 3. Values. He said that thorough knowledge and understanding on the part of the teacher about the concepts like justice, equality and freedom could prove very beneficial for the society. While discussing the skills, he elaborated on the importance of Scientific temperament, critical thinking, objectivity, conflict resolution, reflective and analytical thinking, freedom of expression and debate and discussion. In his speech, Prof. Nadeem also mentioned that education is a tripolar process and students should get every opportunity to express themselves in and outside the classroom so that their needs, interests and aspirations can be accommodated. He talked about the beauty associated with values like Openness, Tolerance, Courage to defend ones line of thinking in an argument, Willingness to Listen and Attitude that comes with Empathy.

8 Prof. Nadeem touched upon the basic principles of democracy and citizenship values. He said that each individual has worth and value irrespective of his/her caste, colour, creed, race, gender, disability, region and religion. Respect for human dignity irrespective of all his/her limitations need to be cherished and nurtured as one of the highest values. In his speech, Prof. Nadeem also batted for the nurturing of egalitarian society where there is no room for any form of discrimination. He also talked about secularism and contextualized its meaning within Indian context. In this connection, he said that, the function of a State should be kept equivadistant from all religions. He further said that, socialism aims at creating a classless or egalitarian society. While criticizing the prevailing form of democratic dispensation in our country, Prof. Nadeem observed that, vote-banking is one form of discrimination. Prof. Nadeem also shared his thoughts and ideas about what he calls Cultural Heterogeneity. In this connection, he emphasized that the teacher at every level must be a highly upright person who believes in meaningful, healthy interaction especially within multicultural/multireligious nature of our classrooms. Last but not the least, Prof. Nadeem voted for introduction of basic legal education at grass root level so that ignorance among the masses about legal matters can be removed and values like respect for law, human rights, duties, multiculturalism, critical thinking and communal harmony could be inculcated. Dr. Fayaz Ahmad Nika, the Directorate of Students Welfare, in his speech made his observations about this two-day CTC. In his remarks, he said that humanization has received a setback in the face of commercialization of education in recent times. Education is pursued keeping in view its

9 financial returns although its major aim has to be the achievement of individual/social transformation. He observed that education is vitally important for the development of each and every individual. This is one of the reasons why education has been kept in the concurrent list rather than State orcentral List. Dr. Fayaz also observed that the teacher has to chisel the human soul by providing the required environment and arouse and nurture inquisitiveness among the students. He also remarked that education should not be standardized rather it should be adaptive in nature. Interaction Session with Student Teachers Dr.. Fayaz supervised the interaction session with the student teachers. Mr. Shabaaz Hussain, an inservice student teacher, remarked that such programmes should be conducted in our own university so that the student teachers get a platform to express themselves more openly and frequently. In response to this grievance, Prof. Nadeem replied that because of paucity of time and physical space we are not yet able to do it but in the future we will try to address this issue. Prof. Nadeem said that in CUK there a platform for elected students as court members who

10 represent student community of CUK in important meetings held in the varsity. Prof. Fayaz responded with the fact that two research students from education department of CUK namely Ms. Khairul Nisa and Ms. Ulfat Ali Lone were representing the university in British Parliamentary Debate held in Punjab College of Technical Education, Ludhiana. Mr. Bashir Ahmad Dar, another inservice student teacher, said that this two-year Teacher Education Programme has transformed him in many ways. But he raised some issues regarding Internal Assessment which were effectively resolved by Prof. Nadeem. To encourage student teachers to express themselves freely, Prof. Nadeem stated that, the best student is one who asks the questions. Mr. Mushtaq Ahmad, an inservice student teacher also felt that the two-year Teacher Education Programme transformed him along many dimensions. Mr. Khazir Mohd., another inservice student teacher complained that he is not aware about the details of this two-day CTC. Information about the details of the programme should have been shared with each and every one who is a participant in this programme. Mr. Javid Ahmad Mir, a student teacher, asked how to inculcate morality among school students. Ms. Nelofer, an inservice student teacher felt that

11 system of education in our State of Jammu and Kashmir leaves much to be desired and asked who is responsible for the same. Mr. Mushtaq Ahmad Azad, Incharge Govt. College of Physical Education, Ganderbal (J&K), shared his views about limitations inherent in the Lecture method of teaching learning process and highlighted the virtues associated with Project-based learning. He also emphatically commented that, don t confine your teaching within four walls of the classroom as we know effective learning is more or less 70% practicals and the rest is theory-based transaction. He also remarked that teacher has to be an inspirational one in order to discharge his/her duties more effectively and meaningfully. Finally, Mr. Mushtaq announced that in the near future, Govt. College of Physical Education, Ganderbal (J&K), will provide hostel facilities so that it becomes possible and easy for the visitors from institutions like CUK to enjoy night stay here in this very campus so that the duration of CTC can be increased and objectives of the same can be more meaningfully realized. Dr. Syed Zahoor Geelani, the Camp Incharge, delivered the vote of thanks for the Inaugural session. The inaugural session ended at around

12 02:50pm followed by the lunch. Midsession The Midsession began at around 03:50pm. The session was conducted in the sports stadium of Govt College of Physical Education, Ganderbal (J&K). The session was meant for providing Self-defence training to student teachers. The trainers from Govt College of Physical Education, Ganderbal (J&K) were given the charge of training student teachers so that the later could learn and apply the basic skills associated with the art of self/private-defence. Mr. Irshad Ahmad and his assistant Ms. Sabahat employed their skills of self-defence in front of all the dignitaries present, Faculty members and student teachers. The session was also graced by the presence of the Hon ble Vice Chancellor Prof. Mehraj-ud-Din Mir. Practical demos of skills associated with sef-defence were keenly watched and learned by the participants present and in the process lot of questions and doubts were raised by the student teachers which were effectively fielded by the trainers. One of the key lessons learned was that Element of Fearlessness is the key in learning the art of self-defence. This session came to an end at around 05:00pm. Afternoon Session The final session of day one began at around 05:10pm in Yoga Hall of Govt College of Physical Education, Ganderbal (J&K). The session began with the live Welcome song sung by Ms. Nasirat, Ms. Rukiya, Ms.Insha, Ms. Tawheeda and Ms. Alie the student teachers that was

13 written by Mr. Manzoor Yousuf, an another student teacher. This was followed by the live University Tarana performed by Mr. Mehraj, Mr. Irfan, Mr. Dawood, Ms. Binte, Ms. Aafiya and Ms. Aaliya. This was followed by a Hindi song sung by Mr. Dawood. Kashmiri Rouf was performed by girl student teachers wearing the cultural attire associated with Kashmiri folk songs. The participants were Ms. Rukiya, Ms. Nusrat, Ms. Saba, Ms. Insha, Ms. Tawheeda, Ms. Aliya, Afshana Manzoor etc. The above mentioned cultural activities were followed by a brief presentation of whatever was discussed in Inaugural session by Prof. N.A. Nadeem, Dean & Head School of Education, CUK. Prof. Nadeem briefed the audience about the Importance of CTC and lauded the outcome of Interaction Session with student teachers. In this session, he announced that he will vouch for opening a two-credit course programme devoted to the development of Citizenship Education in student teachers in the near future. In the face of this announcement, Hon ble VC Prof. Mehrajud-Din Mir not only endorsed this proposal but also added that lets make it a four-credit course programme instead of two.

14 As Chief Guest for the session, the Hon ble VC Prof. Mehraj-ud-Din Mir started his speech by saying that, he is witnessing education in action here. He observed that the basis of higher education lies in Generation, Dissemination, Extension and Application of knowledge. Prof. Mir also exhorted the fact that education should be relevant to the society and such programmes like CTC should be a part and parcel of our lives. He showed his displeasure about the growing moral/value degradation in our society. He also expressed his appreciation about various cultural activities performed during this session. But he also felt that the cultural activities performed by the students, should reflect the whole of Jammu and Kashmir. Finally, Prof. Mehraj directed that department of teacher education should also conduct such programmes in its lab. Schools. The concluding remarks for the day were made by Dr. Syed Zahoor Geelani, the Camp incharge. He also delivered the note on vote of thanks. The entire day s anchoring duty was discharged by Mr. Manzoor Yousuf and Ms. Tabassum Zehra, the student teachers.

15 11 th August 2017 (Day 2) The agenda for the second day of Two Day Citizenship Training Camp was to visit a tribal school identified in the Kangan district of Kashmir in the first session. The second session of the day was aimed at Cleanliness Drive at Sonmarg. Session I: School Based Interaction cum Cultural Programme Venue: Govt. Girls Middle School, Gujjarpati Prang, Zone Kangan, School Code Government Girls Middle School (GGMS) is located at a remote place in Kangan district of Kashmir. The school is surrounded by inhabitation of Gujjar population. This school was identified with the help of one of the student teacher of B.Ed. third semester of School of Education, Central University of Kashmir. The school is to be accessed by crossing a narrow cement bridge over a brook. The school building has no compound walls to mention its demarcation. The space between the three surrounding building is used as the assembly ground and playground. In total there are four classrooms, with no lights. The walls of the classrooms have been painted with charts and educational quotes. These four classrooms are used to conduct eight grades of classes, for around thirty students from the nearby locality. The principal s room is near the building with classroom but as a separate space. Even the principal s room doesn t have a computer.

16 Interaction between the student teachers and school students at the school was initiated primarily with the intention of motivating school children to increase their quality of interest in their studies. The student teachers formed groups and visited the classrooms. They were allowed to interact with the students under the supervision of the school staff and faculty group from the university. Some student teachers made the students actively engaged in group activities and rhymes. Meanwhile, edibles were distributed to the school students. After an hour of interaction, all the students were assembled in the space outside the school building for distribution of bags, notebooks, and stationary items. The distribution was done under the charge of Dr. S.Z. Geelani, Associate Prof. School of Education and Dr. Nika DSW, CUK. Each student was given a school bag, which had notebooks and required stationary items within it. As the activity progressed, the parents who were working nearby too gathered to witness the activities. The extra bags were submitted to the principal s office to be distributed to the absentees later.

17 After the distribution of the stationary kits the student teachers made the students sing local traditional songs. Meanwhile, a meeting of the teaching staff of the school and the university was arranged in the principal s cabin. This meeting was presided over by Dr. S.Z. Geelani, Prof. Nika and Mr. Farooq Ahmad, the Principal of GGMS. Dr. S. Z. Geelani set the discussion open by briefing about the six months rigorous internship program planned under the ambit of latest two year B.Ed. Programme. The two day citizenship training camp, and the school visit on the second day was a subpart of this internship program. He further opened up the dais for suggestions from the staff members which could help the teacher trainees to meet the current challenges in the field. He also pointed out the need for interaction with the students and interaction with the parents to get a perception of the school s performance so far and the requirement of the school.

18 Mr. Bilal one of the school teachers raised a concern that the syllabus of the school was not according to the level of students. He highlighted the absence of even the boundary walls around the school campus. He also suggested that this kind of interaction with the school must be of at least half a month. Such an initiative would enable the student teacher to perceive the real and day to day difficulties encountered by a regular teacher deployed in such challenging conditions. Mr. Farooq, the Principal of the school expressed his gratitude for the support provided by University in the form of stationary kits and bags to the students. He clearly demarcated that the students are from low socio-economic background and the only support that they have at hand is the teachers support. He also revealed that in the absence of adequate funds from the government they are collecting a small amount of fees from the students. At this, Dr. Geelani suggested the principal to initiate collaboration with an NGO. The Principal accounted the instance of being associated with one, but the only support that they got from them was medicines. He also expressed his wish that Central University of Kashmir adopts this school. He again expressed his immense happiness regarding the initiative taken by Central University of Kashmir. Dr. Nika paid his reverence to the teachers of the school. He emphasized on the need to include the marginalized sections of the society for sustainable development. He also highlighted the fact that he was quite thrilled by how eight classes were conducted in four rooms. He cited the need of missionary zeal that would enable the teachers to work for the trust reposed in them. This could be done only by imparting the best that a teacher can. The commitment of teacher can work wonders for effective social change. The functioning of the school would become extraordinary and outstanding only if an individual is able to perform best within the given constraints. He further employed an analogy that the students are mud which takes the impressions provided by the teachers. This marks the importance of teachers in the life of students. The interaction with the students, staff and the parents was important to trace the needs of the school at the ground level. It enabled the student teachers to trace how improvement can be brought about in the given constraints. Further, the DSW promised that he would do his best to donate a computer to the school from the University.

19 Session II: Cleanliness Drive at Sonmarg, Kashmir All the student teachers and the faculty accompanying them had lunch at a park near Sonmarg. This enabled an intra-group interaction amongst student teachers and the faculty. This gave a scope to know about the expectations of the student teachers from such a citizenship camp. Points regarding better planning and communication were cited as the key points which need to be worked upon for the future. Post lunch the batch reached Sonmarg. After assembling at a place, attendance of all the batches that were part of the visit was taken. The need for a cleanliness drive was pointed by the student

20 teachers after looking at litter around the Sonmarg Valley. Half an hour cleanliness drive was conducted by the student teachers and the faculty members of the University. Finally, the whole Two-Day CTC would not have seen the light of the day without the financial assistance and active cooperation from the university.
