1 ActionLine...Your Board Meeting Update August 22, 2012 Staff assignments approved During the Aug. 21 Board meeting, Aldine ISD Trustees announced three staff assignments that were approved at a special called meeting on July 30. John M. Picklesimer was named principal of Plummer Middle School after serving as principal of COMPASS. Picklesimer received his bachelor s degree in music from Hardin Simmons University in 1981 and his master s degree in educational administration from the University of Houston-Clear Lake in He is certified as a principal. He began his teaching career in Pasadena ISD in 1995 as a music teacher. He joined Pearland ISD in 2001 as an assistant principal at C. J. Harris Elementary School and in 2002, he joined Aldine ISD as an assistant principal at Carroll Academy. He moved into his present position as principal of COMPASS in Picklesimer also worked in industry before he entered the education field as a district, risk and branch manager from 1987 to He has 16 years of experience in the field of education and has spent three of those years in Aldine ISD. Torivio Trevino was named an assistant principal at Aldine Middle School after serving as band director at Escamilla Intermediate School. Trevino received his bachelor s degree in music from the University of Houston in 2005 and his master s degree in educational administration from Prairie View A&M University in He meets district requirements for this position. He began his teaching career as a band director of Benji s Academy in the Houston Independent School District in In 2009, he moved to Aldine ISD to his present position as band director at Escamilla Intermediate School. Trevino has seven years of experience in the field of education and he has spent three of those years with Aldine ISD. Lakeshia Smith was named assistant principal at Rayford Road Intermediate School after serving as a counselor at Magrill Elementary School. Smith received her bachelor s degree in psychology in 1999 and her master s degree in criminal justice in 2001 from Grambling State University. She meets district requirements for this position. She began her teaching career in Aldine ISD in 2002 as a math teacher at Wilson Intermediate School. In 2004, she transferred to Grantham Academy to teach history. She moved into her present position as a counselor at Magrill Elementary School in Smith has spent all 10 of her years in education with Aldine ISD. During the Aug. 21 Board meeting, Aldine ISD Trustees approved five staff assignments. James Metcalf was named principal at COMPASS after serving as an assistant principal at Hoffman Middle School. Metcalf received his bachelor s degree in kinesiology in 1994 and his master s degree in educational administration from Sam Houston State University. He is certified as a principal. He began his teaching career in

2 Aldine ISD in 1996 as a history teacher at Stovall Middle School. In 2001, he was named assistant principal at Eisenhower High School. He transferred to Hoffman Middle School in 2010 to serve as an assistant principal. Metcalf has spent all 16 of his years in education with Aldine ISD. Debra Martinez was named assistant principal at Nimitz High School after serving as an assistant principal at Conroe ISD. Martinez received her bachelor s degree in elementary education from Texas A&I University in 1991 and her master s degree in educational administration in 1995 from Texas A&M University. She is certified as a principal. She began her teaching career in 1991 as a second-grade teacher at Orange Grove Elementary School. In 1994, she relocated to Corpus Christi ISD and served as a fourth-grade teacher. In 1997, she returned to Aldine ISD to serve as an assistant principal at Orange Grove Elementary School. In 2002, she transferred to Nimitz High School to serve as an assistant principal. In 2007, she moved to Houston ISD as the dean of instruction. In 2008, she moved into her present position as an assistant principal in Conroe ISD. Martinez has 21 years of experience in the field of education and she has spent 13 of those years with Aldine ISD. John Vaglienty was named assistant principal at Nimitz High School after serving as a field engineer at Nomac Services Directional. Vaglienty received his bachelor s degree in history from the University of Houston in 1999 and his master s degree in educational administration from Sam Houston State University. He is certified as a principal. He began his teaching career in 2001 as a special education teacher in Cy-Fair ISD. In 2006, he was named an assistant principal in Cy-Fair ISD. In 2011, he moved into his present position as a field engineer with Nomac Services Directional. Vaglienty has 11 years of experience in the field of education. Dora Garza was named assistant principal at Reed Academy after serving as a language arts skills specialist at Johnson Elementary School. Garza received her bachelor s degree in elementary education from the University of Houston-Downtown in 2004 and her master s degree in educational administration from Lamar University in She is certified as a principal. She began her teaching career in 2004 in Aldine ISD as a bilingual teacher at Johnson Elementary School. In 2010, she moved into her present position as a skills specialist at that same school. Garza has spent all of her eight years in education with Aldine ISD. Janie Ruiz was named assistant principal at Thompson Elementary School after serving as a skills specialist at that same school. Ruiz received her bachelor s degree in academic studies in 1995 and her master s degree in educational administration in 1999 from Sam Houston State University. She began her teaching career in 1995 in Aldine ISD as a bilingual teacher at Sammons Elementary School. In 1998, she transferred to Carter Academy to serve as a bilingual teacher. In 1999, she was named an assistant principal at Thompson Elementary School and in 2001 she moved into her present position as a bilingual skills specialist at that same school. Ruiz has spent all of her 11 years in education with Aldine ISD.

3 MacArthur Brigade Belle officers perform for Trustees The MacArthur High School Brigade Belle officers performed during the Aug. 21 Board meeting, fresh off taking top honors at the summer camp they attended. In addition to performing for Aldine ISD Trustees and the audience, they also performed for MacArthur High teachers during their recent in-service. Aldine High wins Superintendent s Trophy at Sonny Donaldson Golf Tournament John Cornett with the Aldine Council of PTAs announced that Aldine High School won the Superintendent s Trophy at the Sonny Donaldson Golf Tournament. On hand to accept the award was Sgt. Randy Hall. Cornett also announced that Dr. Linda Rodriguez, area superintendent for the Aldine Vertical, won the Area Superintendent s Plaque. The Aldine Vertical raised the most money for the event, more than $3,000. The Donaldson Tournament benefits the Aldine Council of PTAs and provides scholarships for AISD seniors. Since 2007, the tournament has generated $36,000 in scholarship funding for AISD seniors. Cornett also thanked Howard Kelly of McDonald s for donating breakfast snacks. Additionally, Kelly, Aaron Nilson and Newt Newman picked up the cost for the lunch that was provided by Outback Restaurant. Pete Stewart, director of human resources, and David Brenek, who recently retired from the district after serving as a counselor at Aldine Middle School, also helped to organize the tournament. Board approves Benefits Advisory Committee s recommendation During the Aug. 21 Board meeting, Trustees approved the Benefits Advisory Committee s recommendation of providing a benefits package for Aldine ISD employees. The district will continue to offer medical plans through Aetna and prescription drug benefits through CVS Caremark. Committee member Bradley Kaplan, the technology specialist at Davis High School, made the recommendation. Other members of the committee were Sharla Rogers of Reece Academy, Tina Lewandowski of Gray Elementary School, Betty Morrow of Orange Grove Elementary School and Barbara Johnson, who is retired.

4 Grants announced During the Aug. 21 Board meeting, Stacey Smith, program director of resource development, announced a number of grants. Jose Almendarez, principal of Sammons Elementary School, secured a $5,000 Lowe s Tool Box grant to fund the school s Beyond the Bricks project. The money will be used to repair picnic tables, paint, plant trees and create an outdoor play area that Sammons students and staff can enjoy. Debera Thomas, principal of Kujawa Elementary School, and teacher Linda Johnson secured a $2,000 Whole Kids Foundation grant to provide funding for Kujawa students to create a school garden. Thomas, along with staff members Sam Tate and Tara Rollins also secured a $3,000 Set the Stage for Tomorrow grant sponsored by Target and the Texas International Baccalaureate Schools that will provide Kujawa students the opportunity to attend and participate in musicals and operas via the Houston Grand Opera, Storybook Opera and Young Audiences of Houston. Sandra Arredondo, principal at Hinojosa EC/Pre-K, and teacher Maria Gonzales, secured a $14,947 grant from the East Aldine Management District. The funding will allow the school to construct a cover for the school s playground area. Mable Holt, principal of Shotwell Middle School, and teacher Peggy Tomme, secured a $5,000 grant from Lowe s to create an outdoor theater at the school. Also assisting in the project is the Outdoor Teaching Theatre, Eagle Scout Troop 1659 and the Hoffman LOTC program. Holt also secured a $1,000 Texas International Baccalaureate Schools Innovative Teaching Grant that will provide funding for the school to host a Broadway production with assistance from the Lone Star College System. The production will involve 300 students and performances will be given for the student body and the community. A number of Aldine ISD schools received 21 st Century Community Learning Grants that were announced at the Aug. 21 Board meeting. Shotwell Middle School (principal Mable Holt) received $134,128 in funding, Stovall Academy (principal Carolyn Washington) received $148,122 in funding, and Hoffman Middle School (principal Cheryl Matthews) received $90,000 in funding. The grants will provide academic enrichment opportunities during non-school hours, with hopes of increasing standardized test scores, and improved behavior and attendance. A number of Aldine ISD schools also received Cooperative for After-School Enrichment (CASE) grants from the Harris County Department of Education. Raymond Academy (principal Jessica Scott) received $50,000 in funding, Stehlik Intermediate School (principal Kristin Craft) received $50,000 in funding, Odom Elementary School (principal Susan Perry) received $35,000 in funding, Goodman Elementary School (principal Camelia Chester) received $50,000 in funding, and Smith Academy (principal Veronica White) received $35,000 in funding. The money will be used to fund afterschool programs. Four Aldine ISD schools received Education Exploration Grants that will also provide funding for after-school enrichment programs. Raymond Academy (principal Jessica Scott) received $5,000 in funding, Stehlik Intermediate School (principal Kristin Craft), received $10,000 in funding, Shotwell Middle School (principal Mable Holt) received $25,000 in funding, and Smith Academy (principal Veronica White) received

5 $50,000 in funding. The grants announced at the Aug. 21 Board meeting totaled $713,197.

6 Program presented Twiana Collier, coordinator of student financial aid, presented the program during the Aug. 21 Board meeting. She presented a summary of scholarships AISD students received during the school year and provided an overview of how the district informs students and parents about ways to make a college education affordable and financially possible.
