Sport v- Nathalia PS at Katunga NAPLAN Testing Jump Rope for Heart Jump Off Day School Photos 9.00 am Head Lice There has been a reported case of Head Lice in the school. Parents are asked to check their child/children s heads and in those instances where head lice or eggs are found, treating your child s hair. Head lice do not transmit infectious diseases they are transmitted by having head to head contact with someone who has head lice. Head lice are common in school-aged children and are the most adaptable of creatures. Information brochures are available from school or from The Department of Education and Training website. Children with head lice can be re admitted to school after head lice treatment has commenced, there is no need to miss school. Helpful hints : - Using a conditioner and comb method regularly is the best way to detect head lice and minimise the problem also - Tying back hair can help prevent the spread of head lice. Cross Country Our school will be hosting the interschool cross country run on Friday 29 th of April at 10.00am. Grades 3-6 will be competing against students from Strathmerton,Waaia-Yalca South, and Katunga South Primary Schools. This event will commence at 10.00am. 1 Thrive, Strive and Achieve

2 ANZAC Ceremony Last Friday we hosted our annual pre-anzac Day ceremony at school. Thank you to everyone who attended the service. The event had great support from the community as well as parents from the school. The student s behaviour was excellent. The way they listened to Mr Dealy the guest speaker and displayed respect during the ceremony was a credit to themselves and their families. Heide Matthews did an amazing job arranging our wreaths, we must thank her again, she certainly is talented. The morning tea after the event was also well supported. I would like to thank Pete and Vicki at the Katunga General Store for supplying that. The student s do gain a lot of knowledge when attending this ceremony and I certainly hope that it continues for years to come. ANZAC Day ceremony held in Numurkah Two of our school captains attended the ANZAC ceremony at Numurkah on Monday, 25 th April. Paige Gilmour and Bailey Smith laid wreaths on our behalf. Thank you so much to their families and to these students for representing our school with pride. Also I would like to acknowledge the other students from our school who marched and represented our school on the day as well. Thank you to all the families that attended Senior School Camp A notice has been sent home to all students in Grades 4 to 6 explaining the details of our camp in This year we are travelling to Canberra for five days. Can you please fill out the expression of interest and return to school by this Friday. 2 Thrive, Strive and Achieve

3 Scholastic Book Club The booklets were sent home with last week s newsletter. All orders are to be received by Wednesday the 27 th of April. Orders may be placed online or by cash/cheque. Please follow the instructions inside your booklets. If you have any queries or require more booklets please do not hesitate to contact the school office. JUMP ROPE FOR HEART 'JUMP OFF DAY' 17 TH MAY Heart Foundation Jump Rope for Heart is renowned as being one of Australia s most popular fundraising event programs in schools. Heart Foundation Jump Rope for Heart is all about learning how to keep fit and healthy. It improves the kids' strength and confidence in physical activities and builds healthy bones and muscles. Students can have lots of fun with their class mates and play lots of skipping games too. At the same time they will be helping save Australian lives by asking their family and friends to sponsor them for being a part of this fun program. Funds raised go towards research to help the fight against heart disease and stroke. Each year over 400,000 students get involved and over 700,000 families and friends sponsor participating students in support of the Heart Foundations lifesaving work. This year Katunga Primary School are getting involved with Jump Rope for Heart and holding a Jump Off Day on Tuesday the 17 th of May. As part of Jump Rope for Heart a Sponsorship form is attached to this week s newsletter in which students can collect donations which will help the Heart Foundation continue their important work, fund lifesaving research and educational program. Also 50% of what is raised by our students will go towards new educational resources for our great school at Katunga Primary. Various awards will be given to the highest fundraisers. We hope that everyone can be involved and support this great cause VCOP Big Write Last week Mrs Edmunds, Mrs Patching and Mr McKenzie attended a professional development session entitled the VCOP Big Write. The Big Write is a program to teach writing for all ages. We will be phasing this program into our curriculum in 2016 and have it embedded into our programs in 2017 and beyond. As such on some Monday nights (starting next Monday) we will be sending home a topic that the students will be writing about the next day. This is called The Big Talk. What we are asking you as parents to do is to discuss this topic with your children for ten to fifteen minutes and give them ideas or follow up on the student s ideas of what to write about the next day. Winter Interschool Sports Program Our interschool winter sports will commence on Friday the 6 th of May at 1.30 pm. Katunga Primary School students from Grade 4, 5 & 6 will be hosting students from Nathalia. Students will be provided with netball dresses and football jumpers but will need to bring along appropriate footwear (runners or football boots), football socks (any colour) and shorts (any colour). The students are very excited about their game and if parents are able they are most welcome to come along and cheer on our football and netball teams. 3 Thrive, Strive and Achieve

4 Annual Report 2015 Last Monday the School Council endorsed our Annual Report for If you wish to view this report please feel free to contact us at the office or visit our website and follow the relevant links. It is in the Policy section and entitled Annual Report Ditto Performance Please see the notice attached to this newsletter regarding this performance. Parents and/or caregivers are invited to attend if they wish. Grade 3/4 Big Day Out at Numurkah Secondary School Please read and fill in the permission slip for this and return to school as soon as possible. This day is a fun day where students experience a day in the life of secondary school. It is not designed for people only going to Numurkah Secondary College but for all students therefore we encourage all student s in grade 3/4 to attend. STUDENT VOICE A special mention needs to be made to Mary Caldow who created this masterpiece last Thursday night. Mary obviously reflected upon and thought about her place in the context of ANZAC Day and wanted to pay her individual respects. Well done Mary! Also a huge congratulations to Sophie Wilson for being selected to represent the Goulburn Murray Division Netball Team. Sophie will be playing a round robin competition in Benalla on Tuesday the 3 rd of May. Well done Sophie! 4 Thrive, Strive and Achieve
