1 1925 Montrose Elementary In 1818, it was known as Fulton Hill School. In 1914, the named changed to Montrose School. It was named in memory of John Hunters home in Scotland, which was called Montrose Heights Short Pump Elementary Named after the area where a short handle pump stood in front of a tavern. 1890: Stand Spring School. In 1902, it was known as Deep Run Grade School. And in 1911, it was known as Short Pump School. In 1925, the present-day facility was built and named Short Pump Elementary School Varina Elementary Varina School opened in In 1916, it was accredited as a four-year high school. In 1920, a separate stucco building was built next to the two-story building to foster the study of vocational agriculture. Varina School now had its own high school building and was known as Varina Agricultural High School. The principal, George F. Baker, served as the first agricultural teacher and the course was offered until 1941, when it was discontinued, the year after Baker retired. In 1928, an auditorium was completed with a seating capacity of 600. The auditorium stage served dual roles, also as a gymnasium. A separate shop building was constructed for industrial arts classes in A small cannery building near the athletic field circa 1945 was converted into classrooms in Two years later, a new wing was added to the high school, which included a cafeteria, seven classrooms, and administrative offices. In 1962, a new Varina High School was built and the original became Varina Elementary Virginia Randolph High Named after the prominent African-American educator Virginia Estelle Randolph ( ) who emphasized the importance of vocational education for youth. In 1892, Virginia Randolph opened a one-room school on Mountain Road, known as the Old Mountain Road School. The present-day school was built in 1929 after a fire destroyed the original school. Virginia Randolph was the only black high school in Henrico County during segregation. After the closing of all-black schools, Virginia Randolph School reopened as the Virginia Randolph Education Center. The Home Economics cottage was set-aside as a museum in Miss Randolph s memory in 1970.

2 1930 Ridge Elementary Name originated in 1878 when students met at the Ridge Meeting House. In 1883 the school moved out of the church and into the schoolhouse fronting Quioccasin Road just south of the church until destroyed by fire in Classes were held at a general store at Three Chopt and Ridge Roads. A new two-room building was erected. In 1907 the school was enlarged to include students through the ninth grade. By 1913 Ridge returned to an elementary school with students through the sixth grade. In 1929 a larger plot of land was acquired six hundred yards from the original school site, and a new brick schoolhouse was constructed Longdale Elementary The original school was built in 1922 on Greenwood Road next to the Greenwood Methodist Church. The original school burned down during Easter 1933, and was rebuilt on the current Norfolk Street location. During the early 20th century, Longdale subdivision was developed by Richmond Coal Company executive E.T. Long Sandston Elementary The original Sandston Elementary School opened in 1923 in the old army hospital building in Seven Pines. It was later torn down when the current school facility opened in Sandston was named for Oliver J. Sands who invested and planned the Sandston community after World War 1. In 1920, Oliver J. Sands organized the Richmond/Fairfield Railway Company and purchased the old Seven Pines street car line from the government. The rail lines helped develop the county, brought in more people, and made the citizens more mobile Tuckahoe Elementary Tuckahoe is one of the oldest elementary schools in western Henrico County dating to The word Tuckahoe, an Algonquin Indian word meaning edible root, was originally spelled Tockawhougha Lakeside Elementary Lakeside Elementary was built in 1948 and was named for the Lakeside community. Major Lewis Ginter named the scenic location of Lakeside when he built an amusement park by the lake with a zoo, games for children, and water sports Glen Lea Elementary In 1876, a one-room schoolhouse located between Harvey Road and Mechanicsville Turnpike known as the Mechanicsville School. In 1908 a new school opened on Mechanicsville Turnpike (across from the present-day Showplace). In 1949, the presentday school opened with seven-classrooms, auditorium, gymnasium, cafeteria, library, clinic and administrative offices and expanded through the years as school enrollment increased.

3 Year School Name 1951 Fair Oaks Elementary Fair Oaks remained an African-American segregated school until the summer of It was one of several black schools in the county. The school was closed during the school year for rezoning. Fair Oaks was reopened in 1970 as an integrated elementary school George H. Moody Middle Named after a school principal and a superintendent of Henrico Public Schools, George H. Moody. Opened in 1951 as Hermitage High School. George H. Moody was appointed the first principal. In 1956, he was promoted to superintendent of Henrico County Public Schools. In 1972, the school became known as George H. Moody Middle School Highland Springs High Named after the area because of its high elevation and free-flowing springs in the area. Highland Springs was founded in 1890 by Edmund S. Read. It was laid out in lots divided by streets named in alphabetical order for various trees and shrubs, such as Ash, Beech, Cedar, and Daisy. The first school was a one-room building established in In 1907, the one-room building was replaced with a four-room building on the lot immediately east of the present-day school and quickly expanded to eight rooms to meet the areas rapid growth. In 1915, it was added to the school system. The present-day high school opened in Douglas Southall Freeman Named after newspaper editor, historian and Pulitzer Prize-winning author Douglas Southall Freeman Crestview Elementary Crestview Elementary School was constructed and named for the crest of a hill that an airport previously occupied on the school s property Laburnum Elementary The school site was originally part of the Clyde Palmer Dairy Farm. The school went through numerous renovations and additions in the 1960s, 1970s, and most recently, a 2004 through 2006 school expansion plan. Originally on construction plans, it was identified as the Henrico Turnpike School. Then, Glenwood Farms Elementary Mehfoud Elementary Originally opened in 1955 and named Henrico Central School, it was one of several black schools in the county. The school was closed in June of 1968 and reopened in September of 1970 as the Varina Annex. In 1987, the school board renamed the school Anthony P. Mehfoud Elementary School, for a former County of Henrico Board of Supervisor.

4 1955 Pemberton Elementary Originally Coal Pit School, Quioccasin School, and later Vandervall after a local civic and community leader, and Crestview Annex. The African-American Coal Pit School most likely took its name from the nearby Springfield Coal Pits. The one-room school established about 1905, was once supervised by Virginia Estelle Randolph, the eminent black educator. It had forty-six students by Added to the Henrico County system in The school also served as a meeting hall for the Mt. Vernon Baptist Church up until In 1932, the school was moved to the vicinity of the present day Quioccasin Road Fire Station, and named Quioccasin School until it was destroyed by fire in Students then attended school in the basement of Quioccasin Baptist Church until 1955 when the county acquired the property for the new Vandervall School (now Pemberton Elementary) named for a retired postal employee who was active in local civic and community roles. The school was closed in 1968 and used as a temporary county public library until the Tuckahoe Public Library Branch was completed. It reopened as an integrat The School finally changed its name to Pemberton in Ratcliffe Elementary Harold Macon Ratcliffe Elementary School was built in 1955 and named for a prominent Henrico County Commonwealth Attorney Baker Elementary Named for George F. Baker who had been principal of Varina School from 1916 to Skipwith Elementary Named after the area named after Sir Henry Skipwith from Leicester, England Maude Trevvett Elementary Named for Maude Trevvett, an educator who taught for 46 years in Henrico County Charles M. Johnson Elementary Originally known as Bethlehem Elementary School. In 1981, the name was changed to Charles M. Johnson Elementary School, first PTA President and a former County of Henrico, Board of Supervisor Maybeury Elementary Named for the location on which the school is located (Maybeury Drive) Fairfield Middle The name Fairfield was derived from the level fields characteristic of the topography in the area. The school originated as Fairfield Junior High School and was opened on an operating dairy farm in Two additional buildings have been added to the original school plan. In 1971, ninth grade was moved to Highland Springs High School. Several years later, sixth grade was repositioned and the name was changed to Fairfield Middle School Tuckahoe Middle The name comes from the Algonquin Indian word for a plant with an edible nutritional root.

5 Year School Name 1959 Seven Pines Elementary Named for seven loblolly pines that stood alongside Williamsburg Road during a Civil War battle May of Historical records indicate the first school in Seven Pines was a one-room schoolhouse next to the cemetery that opened in the 1890s. It was enlarged to four rooms in 1916, and the school closed in the early 1920s. The present-day Seven Pines Elementary School facility opened in Brookland Middle In 1959, it was named Brookland Junior High School. In 1972, the name was changed to Brookland Middle School. The campus style buildings are named after historic homes of famous Virginians Pinchbeck Elementary Named after Dr. Raymond B. Pinchbeck, Dean of University of Richmond and later chairman of the Henrico School Board Chamberlayne Elementary It was named for the Chamberlayne community.
